Sunak's D-Day 'mistake': How damaging is it for his campaign?

- The prime minister has faced criticism for leaving the 80th anniversary D-Day commemorations early to record a TV interview that's due to go out next week.
Rishi Sunak has since apologised - saying that "on reflection" leaving early "was a mistake", but also that it shouldn't be politicised.
Niall Paterson looks at how damaging this misstep is for Mr Sunak with Claire Pearsall, former Conservative special adviser at the Home Office, and Joe Twyman, the co-founder of the polling company Deltapoll.
Plus, our chief political correspondent Jon Craig tells us just how big of a political blunder it was.

He just repeated a prepared statement a number of times. I'm sure many 4 year olds could have made a more convincing apology.

If the Tories didn't think through the implications of Brexit, why would they think through the implications of Sunak leaving the commemoration ceremony early? The fact that Sunak would leave early doesn't surprise me. I am surprised that people are shocked by his actions.
He is exactly a pure representation of that entire party and everyone in it. People shouldn't be surprised either how they partied like wild animals while everyone else was in lockdown. They have no accountability or sense of moral compass whatsoever. If the UK was the Titanic, they'd take all the life boats for themselves and let everyone else drown.

Just listen to his voice, there is no emotion, sorrow or embarrassment in it. He just can't see that what he did was wrong, as for not politicising what he did, I'm sorry he decided not to go to the International event simply so he could go to ITV and make a pre recorded purely political interview. The man has neither shame nor the honesty to admit it.
Sunak is a technocrat and technocrats are rarely suited to politics.
My Grandfather was killed by the Germans in 1940. Both my late father and I served in the British Army as a matter of honour. The PM has no honour. I am ashamed of him and his government.

Because he spoke with a posh accent and seemed appropriately callous he was taken for A rich posh Brit , this bought him a billionaire wife.
He just thinks he is more important than anyone - the presidents of States and France, PM of Canada etc., military, veterans. he thinks they had half day of his time and everyone should be very grateful for that. Did he travel by private jet. His arrogance, vanity and entitlement is astonishing.

The Tories don't like the young and the poor, and love the rich, we all know that. So he probably left early because he didn't care about the brave young men who fought and died on the beaches, who were working class teenagers (average age 18). When he came back, still on the 6th of June, he said childcare would be paid to households earning £150,000 a year, putting them in the top 10% of the richest people in the UK! So leaving the D-Day celebrations was for normal Tory reasons!

The D-Day Veterans landed in small boats, to fight for Human Rights. Service to others, and universal compassion. Well worth comemorating and cultivating.
Why would Tories care about human rights, service to others and universal compassion?
The sacrifice of the veterans and the cynical selfish lightweight opportunism of Sunak could not be in starker contrast.
I am not going to lie. I felt a little emotional at the end of the video. Not for Sunak but for the vets.

the sad thing is apart from leaving early he decided to unwisely use the time to do a campaign interview defending his lie on the £ 2000 pound figure re labours taxes - will the political documentary get pulled as rishi said he doesn't want to politicise the D-day absence and will in the new spirit of apologies say sorry for giving fake figures or is he just going to resign

Well, at least, as a man that clearly likes a well prepared itinerary, he's got a four week head start on arranging his flight's to Los Angeles.
The man's robotic. It all meant nothing more than a photo opportunity rather than paying tribute. Unfortunately he can't relate to people who's relatives made the ultimate sacrifice. Whilst he made his way and back via private jet veterans returned to Normandy to honour the fallen. Awful man.
I'm sure Sunak has the utmost respect for our veterans sacrifice, but what this speaks to most is his political competence. The importance of this day has been known for eighty years, making "planning" excuses simply makes him look incompetent, out of touch and operating in a Downing Street bubble.

Labour are going to win this election, gaffes or no gaffes by Sunak. Sunak gaffes could mean that the Tories may not be the official opposition come July 5th.
He and his advisers no doubt spent long minutes coming up with that non-apologetic “apology”. He proudly states they planned this months ago like that’s better. Astonishing. We shouldn’t be surprised though, these Tories have shown for years how incompetent and corrupt they are.

People vote Conservative or Labour because they think the views of the party are correct. This move has everybody in agreement. Worse than a forgettable broken promise, Sunak’s decision has this time embarrassed an entire nation. Country first, Rishi.

Having no British background and ties to the second world war is is problem, hes not British in the sense we are, we have family, great uncles grandparents and others who actually fought and often died in the war. sunak can never have a true respect for these ancestors and should not have been made prime minister.
