This is a brilliant song. I recently lost my mother, and I know Ray recently lost two of his older sisters. This song makes me happy and sad at the same time, and it never fails to move me. Thank you Ray Davies for this and all your incredible music.
I have been an Kinks music- and lyric admirer since I joined the 1st Kinks concert in Denmark Forum in Odense Hans Christian Andersens birth town H.C.A lived from 1805 - 1870, The concert took part in 1966, and was stopped cus the beautiful Danish girls smashed hundreds of cheap, bad chairs. I enjoyed ,at least ,1 hoursmusic and the girl- screams until they got amoc against the chairs so no kisses this night
I think Scattered may arguably be Ray's crowning achievement in songwriting. Such honesty, sadness, and ultimately, acceptance, in a song that deals with all of the pain and uncertainty we feel, as, one after another, we all travel down a path we all must take and the futility of worrying about it. All of this couched in an incredibly crafted pop gem. Holy cow. This is as good as anything Dylan, Simon, Lennon, Townshend etc. Ever did. God save the Kinks
I'm binging Davies today and I believe your sentiment is not only spot on but applies to MOST of his work. Such humanity underscores everything he does...with extreme craft.
God, I always felt that way. It was so good to see the two brothers smiling. Tell me, are they both still around? They are such special songwriters, just like Paul, Elton, and Mick.
To me it is the best song I ever heard in my life. Bit it was their epitaph. When it fails as a singlke, the record company took the single from he market (So the single shoukld be some collecztors item), and they broke up with the Kinks . ASs far as I understand this song was cursed. Without this song the Kinks might have las#stet some more years..
What a shame that such a beautiful, melodic, creative song didn't make it to the top. It appears rock is aging just like Mom & Dad's big band music did. We'd all be forgotten & scattered throughout the sands of time if it weren't for Jesus resurrecting us from our graves some day.
This song is why Ray nudges Elvis Costello in my book. Timeless, not teary, and full of hope... for death. My fondest memories- Actually watching the Actual sunset while standing at the Actual Waterloo station, while I was studying film at the University of London. The second memory is watching the Kinks in a small club in Charlotte in 1993. I yelled for "Waterloo Sunset." Ray rolled his eyes. I thought he was pissed off. Then he played it. He played it.
There is not one bad song from the Kinks ,...and that is rare to really say ,..of any band ,.. their authenticity and dignity ,...no band can top them ,... the pure honesty ,.. LOVE THE KINKS FOREVER !!
The mighty Kinks never disappoint, as a lyricist Sir Raymond Douglas is totally unique, never underestimate the contribution of Dave Davies, beautiful harmonies & excellent guitar work
I had never heard this song until I clicked on an interview segment which showed a clip from the video so I found the video and watched it. This video was never played on MTV in the US as far as I know. It's a catchy song, but the cheerful tune is in contrast to the morbid video with the graves. This is a video in which if they had used those clips from a movie would have been much better to just have Ray and Dave driving around the country side or just doing anything at all rather then this movie it is or clip if they created this with actors. Why is one man so short, what is going on in this video? If the video and the song could have slightly tweaked to be more positive this could have been a big hit for the Kinks.
This may be his best song and I know that's saying a lot. It was written when his Mom passed and it is very comforting in it's way. Not to mention the melody.
Really? It's a pleasant enough effort but it's positively 2nd-rate when against the astonishing "Two Sisters", "Big Black Smoke", "The Way Love Used To Be", "Autumn Almanac", "Dead-end Street", "Father Xmas", "Oklahoma, USA", "Shangri-La".... I can name another 20 or 30. But, hey, it is better than most of the rubbish out there, true.
Like a seed that is sewn All the children are scattered By a breeze that is blown Now the crops are all scattered We are torn, we are shattered Now some of us are barmy and battered And the fields where we gathered Are overgrown in weeds and in tatters Through it all we were scattered To the fields we are scattered From the day we are born To grow wild and sleep rough Till from the earth we are torn And a soul that is free Can live on eternally And the spirit can live on Though it's scattered in the world beyond And I've been out of my mind Ever since she's been gone I look around that empty room No sight nor sound She's left so soon She's out of view But the I find Those scattered clues she left behind A photograph with a smiling face A cigarette stubbed out on the fireplace A coffee cup with her lipstick stains I guess I'll never see her again Now my life is all scattered Ever since she's been gone I feel older, I feel fatter I feel the blues coming on We get bruised We get battered But we'll pick up the pieces that scattered And with emotional glue We're gonna stick together, body and mind Ever since she went away I've been alone to contemplate Time and space and why world's move While sitting in my solitude I've watched the stars and wondered why They're scattered up there in the sky And is she up there out of view On some higher platitude I wish I knew Wish I could prove The reason why this life on earth Is scattered like the universe I'm scattered here and scattered there Bits of me scattered everywhere To the fields we are scattered Then from the dust we are born We survive somewhat battered To a new life, a new dawn IN the end what will it matter There'll only be my ashes to scatter And all the logical answers To a worrying mind Will be scattered in time Beaten and battered To the earth you are scattered You're going home so what does it matter To an atomic mind Scattered here while you travel time
Imagine The Kinks playing the luncheon after a funeral you've attended? Great video accompanies a great tune as they did very good work going out the door. Memory serves, their Manager died just as they were getting ready for the Phobia record release which set everyone back. Previously the Davies Matriarch had passed away inspiring this tune. I will always love this song.
We saw this tour and it was as good as any of their tours! Soap Opera was great , Schoolboys was great. First time was the Preservation Act Two and we were hooked. Great Talents two ! Awesome lyrics always.
I had never heard this song until a few days ago..It might be the most lyrically brilliant thing Ray ever wrote..pure genius..Ive listened to it 50+ times the last few days...Rock on KINKS!!!
ray Davies is a genius, I've grown up listening to his music. I can't say I'm a number 1 fan coz my dad is through + through!!! so I must be number 2 fan.
And a soul that is free can live on eternally. Yes, and as Ray also sang: we are all God’s children. God save the Kinks!! Please release that new album in 2022!
Great song, have a good memories whit my brother and old friends from 1994,my best wishes for all of them wherever they are now, Ricardo Acosta,Cristian.
I feel sorry for anyone that has'nt heard the kinks..dosent know ray's lyrical genius ...dosent know dave's guitar mastery..40 year Kinks fan...god save the kinks!!!!
Give me a band that has Ray Davies writing the songs and Dave Davies playing lead guitar any day of the year...The Kinks always and forever exceptional. 😊
@tommyrock69 I was at that show too. Rocky's on Independence Blvd. My friend about got kicked in the face for reaching her hand up Dave's leg and tickling his ankle during a solo. I got to sit through the soundcheck earlier that day. Still one of the coolest moments of my life. I about sh*t myself when I found out they were playing Charlotte, AND it was a club tour. First and only time I got to see the greatest band ever.
Here in Phoenix, we have three stations that claim to specialize in the '80's and '90's. None of them play the Kinks, even upon request. Local radio went to shit when clear channel destroyed the old radio stations.
Great song! IF the Kinks last LP, "PHOBIA" had more songs like this--perhaps it would'nt have bombed--this is the best song on an otherwise passe' album that has 3-4 good tunes. I miss the old Kinks line-up: bass players Pete Quaife or John Dalton, and Mick Avory on drums! After Dalton left, it was like a series of back-up musicans for Ray and Dave. Too bad...
It was inspired by Guy Fawkes, but it looks remarkably like the V for Vendetta mask. And remember, the graphic novel had been out for several years when this video was made.
Reminds me my youth years. Wish i could go back to those days, was 13 and felt like everything was possible. Now i have achieved nothing, i Wish i did everything differently. The Song itself Is NOT comparable to their best hits, but It means a lot in my memories.
And then, the end.....last "single" released by the band which sadly bombed commercially. To a worrying mind Will be scattered in time Beaten and battered To the earth you are scattered You're going home so what does it matter To an atomic mind Scattereed here while you travel time
If this is to be the last Kinks song, it's a strong finish.
Quality -- can't believe it's been 30 years since this came out.....
This is a brilliant song. I recently lost my mother, and I know Ray recently lost two of his older sisters. This song makes me happy and sad at the same time, and it never fails to move me. Thank you Ray Davies for this and all your incredible music.
Scattered was recorded after their Mom had passed. One very beautiful song.
Great song..lost my mum too..last yr...ray helps make it lil better..
@@richardsolis6274 abrazo fraterno por tu pérdida, hermano.
Nice to see the brothers smiling at each other. Great.
I agree let's have a fucking reunion already,,
I have been an Kinks music- and lyric admirer since I joined the 1st Kinks concert in Denmark Forum in Odense Hans Christian Andersens birth town H.C.A lived from 1805 - 1870, The concert took part in 1966, and was stopped cus the beautiful Danish girls smashed hundreds of cheap, bad chairs. I didn't read your comment until I commented the same. Sorry. But it was so beautiful.
Yes!
The Kinks are immortals. Hear their songs and weep when they die, and then know they live on. Their songs are with us. Forever.
Don't push it.
@Astro Gremlin
Let's not cut the life or their fate, please. Classic music is what they have always made.
I think about this, sadly. Almost a microcosm of "celluloid heroes"
Your description is as perfect as the song's lyrics. The Kinks are Number One.
I'm binging Davies today and I believe your sentiment is not only spot on but applies to MOST of his work. Such humanity underscores everything he does...with extreme craft.
Kevin Hicks it’s a remarkable song
My long-held opinion: The Kinks are the most consistently underrated rock band in existence.
God, I always felt that way. It was so good to see the two brothers smiling. Tell me, are they both still around? They are such special songwriters, just like Paul, Elton, and Mick.
Still my favorite band. God save the Kinks! ❤
20 new kinks songs are coming out
Ray and Dave I thank you for all you presented on me
Ray is a Genius.....One of the Best songs ever! Lot of Truth/Sadness/Beauty = Life
I can't fault a word you wrote Jaques, peace sir.
Rest in peace Jim Rodford.
To the earth we are scattered.
The last track on their last studio album.....what a high note to go out on.
The entire record is gorgeous
To me it is the best song I ever heard in my life. Bit it was their epitaph. rockisheaven you are so right. Maybe Rays finest hour!
Kinks 2020. The comeback albumn is coming.
What a shame that such a beautiful, melodic, creative song didn't make it to the top. It appears rock is aging just like Mom & Dad's big band music did. We'd all be forgotten & scattered throughout the sands of time if it weren't for Jesus resurrecting us from our graves some day.
And to see how Ray and Dave make music together is a pleasure!!
Great song we all see those floating apparitions, really. The Lady in the green velvet dress floating across the room 🙂👍
How is this freaking song not famous? it's lyrics are poetic and true and the beat is a driving force.
This song is why Ray nudges Elvis Costello in my book. Timeless, not teary, and full of hope... for death.
My fondest memories- Actually watching the Actual sunset while standing at the Actual Waterloo station, while I was studying film at the University of London. He played it.
YOU ARE ABSOLUTELY SPECTACULAR❤
One of the finest songwriters, certainly lyricists, the UK . . . the world . . . has produced
There is not one bad song from the Kinks ,...and that is rare to really say ,..of any band ,.. their authenticity and dignity ,...no band can top them ,... the pure honesty ,.. LOVE THE KINKS FOREVER !!
They're one of my favorite bands. But to say they had no bad songs is just laughably silly.
To use laughably to modify silly is silly and laughable.
I like the kinks .. lol but they have tons of horrible songs
@@user-wk2qp8cp8x Tons, really? Like to list them?
@@adolforodolfo6929 lol yea I will do that for you .. lmfaooooooo

Ray is a lyrical phenomenon! And with Dave a musical superpower! So sad this got overlooked!
The more I listen to this song the more I like it. No matter the time, the year, the minute it is timeless.
The Kinks are back!!!
After 22 years, the Davies brothers are back!!
¡¡CONGRATULATIONS!!
This may be his best song and I know that's saying a lot. It was written when his Mom passed and it is very comforting in it's way. Not to mention the melody.

Remarkable band. They continue to give me enormous enjoyment. Timeless.
Like a seed that is sewn
All the children are scattered
By a breeze that is blown
Now the crops are all scattered
We are torn, we are shattered
Now some of us are barmy and battered
And the fields where we gathered
Are overgrown in weeds and in tatters
Through it all we were scattered
To the fields we are scattered
From the day we are born
To grow wild and sleep rough
Till from the earth we are torn
And a soul that is free
Can live on eternally
And the spirit can live on
Though it's scattered in the world beyond
And I've been out of my mind
Ever since she's been gone
I look around that empty room
No sight nor sound
She's left so soon
She's out of view
But the I find
Those scattered clues she left behind
A photograph with a smiling face
A cigarette stubbed out on the fireplace
A coffee cup with her lipstick stains
I guess I'll never see her again
Now my life is all scattered
Ever since she's been gone
I feel older, I feel fatter
I feel the blues coming on
We get bruised
We get battered
But we'll pick up the pieces that scattered
And with emotional glue
We're gonna stick together, body and mind
Ever since she went away
I've been alone to contemplate
Time and space and why world's move
While sitting in my solitude
I've watched the stars and wondered why
They're scattered up there in the sky
And is she up there out of view
On some higher platitude
I wish I knew
Wish I could prove
The reason why this life on earth
Is scattered like the universe
I'm scattered here and scattered there
Bits of me scattered everywhere
To the fields we are scattered
Then from the dust we are born
We survive somewhat battered
To a new life, a new dawn
IN the end what will it matter
There'll only be my ashes to scatter
And all the logical answers
To a worrying mind
Will be scattered in time
Beaten and battered
To the earth you are scattered
You're going home so what does it matter
To an atomic mind
Scattered here while you travel time
Thanks for posting the lyrics Leo.

The emotion is Ray's, but Dave is the driving force - what a lovely little analogy for The Kinks.
Another Kinks masterpiece ............ very striking lyric
I love everything about this song even the video is great

Me too, since 64 but not dedicated till 1966 with the release of Kinks Kontroversy.
I love the Kinks. Always will. Look up their songs and live in awe of the voices that came to us to free our hearts.
Should have been a hit.
Last great Kinks tune. To The Bone is good.
Arista should have promoted Lost and Found better after the success of Come Dancing but The Kinks were always underappreciated. Criminally so.
Mike: ´Scattered´ IS a hit .... -for all of us here .Know what you mean man. Have fun, without covid and shit in the world.
You can tell that so many other artists (Sting, ect.) were influenced by this. Yes, should've been a hit.
I love this song! It's so real!!
richard sams yes it is!
And a soul that is free can live on eternally.
Yes, and as Ray also sang: we are all God’s children. God save the Kinks!! Please release that new album in 2022!
The Kinks in the 90s are fantastic!
Even the kinks videos show more intelligent than most teenybopper bands.
I love this song so much..Ray tells it like it is, in a very entertaining video..with Dave! 😍🤗

Yeah, the beatles have just hit over 170 million views on vevo for dont let me down, not bad for a 50 year old song eh! Who's outlasting who?
The Kinks are more emotionally mature and far more consistent.
😂. @frank. You’re obviously too dumb to understand the comment. Enjoy your little boy band & we’ll listen to the real GOATS of music
Outstending song. Memories of my live.

Love this catchy tune.. and the songwriter.
Classic tune!
Why this wasnt a hit I don't know. DJs probably thought it was morbid

Better than any of the Britpop which shortly followed this song but ignored unjustly like so many other Kinks songs
