Moment China 'spy balloon' is shot down by fighter jet

- The United States has shot down a Chinese spy balloon which had been floating across the country since last week.
It was brought down after an order from President Biden, who had earlier vowed to "take care" of the balloon.
Hundreds of miles of airspace were cleared for the operation.
Sky's US Correspondent Mark Stone reports.

Quite surprised they used a rather expensive AIM-9X just to pop a balloon instead of just a quick burst from it's cannon.
Edit: AIM-9X was used which is far cheaper than AMRAAM but still, a lot more expensive than a couple of hundreds of 20mm rounds. lol

Reason is the balloon was at 68000 ft, raptor maxes out at around 65000. Holding a stable guns shot would have been more difficult.

20 years ago the Canadians tried to pop a similar balloon with 20mm cannon fire from a F-18, it didn't work.
This was right over myrtle beach and that's where I live. So weird seeing this of all things in the news lol.
Funny. Over two years ago I had this dream...I was in a wood shack (cabin) by a beach and this direction in my dream is where the balloon was shut down. Anyway, in this dream I saw about four Chinese men in their military fatigue with no weapons standing on the beach looking into the cabin I was in. I didn't see a boat or anything how they got there and it was during a low tide because I could see a lot of sand. I was thinking how can this be Chinese military standing on American beach? @@lovly2cu725 Alaska and Canada are in the midst of winter and bringing it down in a remote spot would have made recovery difficult if not impossible. They could have done it in Montana but I think they hoped no one would notice so they could shoot it down in the Atlantic without it ever making the news. Or they let it fly across the US so China got bad press from committing a hostile action.

It's stealth to radar, it isn't immune to atmospheric effects or eyes. Even if they do have a way to secretly eliminate trails they're obviously not going to showcase the full capability of the F-22 killing a balloon above the US itself.

@@lordhoden Thanks. Also, I've since learned that for some reason cannon shells are not the best weapon for this type of target. Apparently, the Canadians had a similar situation and fired a great many cannon shells into their Chinese balloon without a satisfactory result. Who would have thought?
