First of all let me say that your sweet videos were missed while you were away, Nice to have you back on line. I can identify with your comments about the beauty of just getting to know the local folks. I spent some time in Antigua , Guatemala during the late 1980's and spent lots of time just hanging out with the women & children in the market. I was rewarded by being invited into a kitchen to learn to cook my favorite dish, chuchistos, watching the women grind the corn flour on a grinding stone that had been used in the family for over a century. Another time I even slept over after attending a childs birthday party to which I brought a birthday cake from the local bakery. Kindness indeed kindles kindness.
Thank you for all your nice messages. I have to say: it's nice to have you guys back as well :)! Thanks for coming back to watch the new episode and to share this dream with me.
Really nice work on the mast steps! They make working on the mast so much easier than a bosun's chair! You really have mastered the art of deciding on a course of action, and doing whatever is necessary to make it happen. It is so good to have an update from you. I hope you are able to keep us loyal viewers in the loop as life continues on Karl.
Great to see you again and all is well with you and Karl. I was worried that you are caught in a big storm and got into trouble for a while. But it was nice to hear from your little sister that everything was ok with you. Well organized with the ladder up the mast. You really get to be a part of an amazing adventure.
Been waiting for an update! Thought you might be on a some crazy journey. I thought about putting steps up but cringe at the thought of drilling a bunch of holes in my mast. Thanks for sharing.
Well, I have been sailing a bit...but because I did not have any internet for some while, you are getting the whole last two months week by week...That's why this video is starting where the last one ended...in Puerto Lindo at anchor...:)
The mast steps looked great, what a nice gentleman to help you, his cat looked nice. When I see this video and the one's from when you were in the marina fixing Karl it's like two different people. So happy after all the hard work, stress that you have finally realized your dream. Look forward to other videos as you progress. Wishing you mild winds and safe travels..
It's really refreshing to see the resourcefulness of the sailing community, and, really, the average family in that part of the world. Here in the U.S., we are used to having ready access to any material thing we need, and the help of many professional technicians to get us on our way. Out there where you are, life is quite different. Thanks for taking us along. Happy Sailing
Hey Allen, you are so right, some of the cruisers are amazingly resourceful! I have learnt and keep on learning so much from them. And also from the people living in rather remote areas where you cannot just type stuff into amazon and have it the next day. And it really makes u realize how simple it sometimes is to fix stuff. Well, simple once you learn to think out of the box and learn to open stuff up, change it around and see if it works out. I admire people who are able to approach problems like that and have been lucky to have met many of them along my way, trying to incorporate their way of looking at things trying to solve problems. We all need some more of that inside us, in my opinion. Less throwing away and buying new stuff and back to learning how to fix things! Ahoy, Nike & Karl
After a hard day at work I can't tell you how nice it is to watch your video and see how well you are doing. Watching you fabricate your mast steps was truly inspiring. You missed your calling, you should have been a trades person.
Glad to know the quiet time was lack of internet not surplus of fish (and water) above decks! Time to go work on the bottom of my hull, it's only a small hole.... Fair Winds!
So happy to see you are back and I must say has beautiful as ever ! Lovely people where you live ;its always that way when you don't live in the big city
Niki, keep an eye on those steps that you made. When you "pound" aluminum as much as I saw in the video, you "work-harden it" which makes it brittle. Keep an eye on the look out for small cracks in the steps. Thank you for the segments on the "local color"; shots of the people from where you were staying. I especially liked the part where you helped some of the children with their homework! Really nice stuff!!!
So good to get an update - okay I have to admit it - I know I'm getting older when the "father figure" kicks in inside my head and I start to worry about you...Glad to hear everything is going well for you and that you are enjoying your dream. Thanks for continuing to take us on the ride! Kelly
You are radiant! I think cruising life is good for you. We are so happy for you, and we appreciate the time you take to share your adventures. I hope to be cruising in 5-10 years, just day sailing until then. As always, best wishes for you!
Well Nike, is so good to see your video... I was wondering if we would ever hear from you again. Great job with those mast steps, and I see you enjoy omelette sandwiches!, I cook breakfast for my Family every weekend, and that is one of their favorite things, my omelettes. One of my girls, (got 5) when I call to come down to eat, ask from bed who is cooking, if anyone says Mom, or someone else, she does not come to breakfast, but if I'm cooking, you can bet she will be there. She loves my breakfasts. When we are in the boat, that is a tradition, every morning!!! Glad to see you are having so much fun. It seems like a nice anchorage!
Glad you're safe and sound. Security probably becomes an increasing issue as venture further into isolated areas. Be careful. Wonderful people along the coast. Great character studies you provide. Nice mast steps, what work!
Great to hear from you Nike - have been checking every few days for number 41. Well done ! from Ross living on a yacht in Australia - so I understand a bit of what challenges you have had.
Well I just have to say that seeing you gp up that high mast shows you have a bigger set than Leo was sporting in his speedo! I know how pannic can set in when you look down at that little boat below. Nice work. Im totally impressed!!!!
Thank you so much, It has been too long, Please understand, I have a problem waiting only one week, so this one was very exciting. Thank you for sharing!
Hi Nike, You are an amazing woman. I have not contacted you earlier even though I've been watching your struggles and successes for a while. You symbolize what all us humans do on a daily basis in a very graphical way. I wish you continued success and fair winds to you and Karl. Peter
That's super. It's nice to see you so happy. Love your new mast steps and the fact that you made them yourself is just a wonderful bonus. Keep it up... Regards, Gary
Really love being able to share a little of your amazing project. Thank you for sharing. I have a full time job at the moment so I can only escape for a sail at weekends, but I'm hatching a plan to do some long distance sailing adventures before too long. Meanwhile, being able to look in on your dream is very inspiring! Go, you!
Glad that you've finally put up some more footage. I'd like to see some of the day to day.. how much you're traveling and the things you come across. I've been waiting for 41. Hahah keep it up!
Your true beauty is shining right through every conversation that you have Nike. Your joy and happiness shows. It not just shows, it glows. Your eyes and your smile are oceans ide. Enjoy Carl and the ocean that you are sailing upon. this is, I believe, your dream come true,
It's great to see that you got underway. You look a lot happier, and you look like you're having fun. It's very gratifying to see that after all of the hard work you put into Karl, it paid off. ;-)
Well I have been following you thru out your travels and it has been a trip! Can not wait for the next one. Good at times and bad but you came thru it. I am now around Hilton Head S.C.(USA) and as far as I go is to Savannah Ga.(USA) When I went to St Thomas (BVI) And St. Johns Island (BVI) I really got into the sailing but It cost so much. I couldn't stay but about 30 days now I'm trying to find away to pay for more sailing. It's really funny when you think about it. I worked 30 years to do what I really want to do. If were luck to make it that long right. I have lost many friends along the way. And now I'm trying to get back out their and do some things. But not you THANK GOD when times got tough the tough got going ! Wow!!!! You just got out their and did it ! Thank GOD for people like you to keep my dreams alive....Wait for your next post see you then!!!!
Hello Nike, Just found your channel last night and watched all of your struggles and successes thus far...Wow!!! As with many others I see here, you are living my dream of living and sailing everywhere possible in the world... I am very close to retirement now and hopefully beginning my dream of locating and aquiring the right boat, since my high school days... Love your videos, website and vlogs and Karl is an awesome boat... What an absolutely amazing transformation with all your hard work... Love your determination in fulfilling your dreams Nike... Looking forward to all your future installments and enjoy seeing your progress in sailing and living the awesome sailing life... Very Inspirational and love seeing an intelligent and cute gal, enjoying getting her hands dirty on a boat, when necessary and to cut costs...lol :-) Fair Winds & Calm Seas, Safe Adventures Dana~

Hi Nike! First of all thanks for the article and all the joy u spread around the world sharing your story! I had a question about the aluminium, I wanted to do an exact copie of your maststeps but then the guy in the metalstore asked what type of aluminium you used. I love it when you get into contry and engage with the people. Great looking steps and you did it yourself. Coodos. Ps the kids were cute. bye for now Bill
I have watched all your vids today and was so glad to see a new post I just bought a small 23" ranger which needs a lot work but u inspired me I was going to scrap it. Thanks for the vids love them! Will you ever sail to east coast of canada or is it too far?

I have enjoyed your series so far, great to see you finally under way. A question on the mast steps: did you use a corrosion inhibitor ( something like Duralac) between the metals? ***** the mast, the steps and the rivets are made from aluminium, that's why I did not use any corrosion inhibitor. And yes, that is a windvane. A Windpilot Pacific. Great video. I'll have to make a few of those steps for my boat. I am about to start on rat lines soon. I'll run steps from the spreaders to the top though. Now I know how to make them. Again Great videos. P.S. Where did you get that rivet gun and spring?
I borrowed that rivet gun from the guy that helped me to build the mast steps. He has a lot of tools on his catamaran...It's a really nice thing to have, I am thinking about getting one...one day :)
well, he just used a normal blade for wood which is actually not soooo great, but it was the only one he had. For the thickness I need to go and measure. I'll let you know...
The entire time I lived in Panama the electricity was kind of a wild card. I wouldn't say 50/50 chance of power going out, but sometimes very close to that......
Well it's about time. I was beginning that you were the victim of foul play or a sailing accident. I'm glad that you are doing well and finally enjoying the sea. Keep up the posts. We are all living vicariously through you!

Good to hear from you. I still amazed at your talents.

GOOD to see you again! I figured you would be a week or more out of sync when you started sailing. Fine job (and heavy metal) on those steps.
eric
Enjoying life, well....... it must be nice. Good for you.
Hi Nike!
First of all thanks for the article and all the joy u spread around the world sharing your story!
I had a question about the aluminium, I wanted to do an exact copie of your maststeps but then the guy in the metalstore asked what type of aluminium you used. He said the 99 alu is easier to fold but he does not know if its strong enough for maststeps. Maybe you can help me on that?
Cheers
Jarne
I love it when you get into contry and engage with the people. Great looking steps and you did it yourself. Coodos. Ps the kids were cute. bye for now Bill
I have watched all your vids today and was so glad to see a new post I just bought a small 23" ranger which needs a lot work but u inspired me I was going to scrap it. Thanks for the vids love them! Will you ever sail to east coast of canada or is it too far?
Nice to hear from you and your adventures again. Wasn't expecting to get another report until after you had done the puddle jump, to be honest. Is that in the plans for the future?
JCFNor The plan to go into the pacific is still there, yes. Just getting to know the boat a little and building up some confidence. Taking it slow :)
I refer to the videos where you seemed to be about to give up when Karl kept throwing problem after problem, i am glad you hung in there, like i said "rough with the smooth" You looked after Karl now he will look after you. Enjoy your voyages Captain and keep your videos coming so that dreamers like me can be with you in spirit. I like your taste in music check out JOSH GARRELS, Love and war and the sea in between, i think you will love it. good luck and fair winds :-)
Yahoo your back!
I have enjoyed your series so far, great to see you finally under way. A question on the mast steps: did you use a corrosion inhibitor ( something like Duralac) between the metals?
I also notice you have a wind powered self steering system on the back of the boat, do you use it and can you describe how it works?
***** the mast, the steps and the rivets are made from aluminium, that's why I did not use any corrosion inhibitor.
And yes, that is a windvane. A Windpilot Pacific. I have not used it yet, though (shame on me), cause I have not done such large passages where I would need it. When I sail I still stear by hand all the time cause it is still new and exciting to me, and I use the autopilot if I have to do sth on the sails e.g.
That is one awesome aluminum cat
Great video. I'll have to make a few of those steps for my boat. I am about to start on rat lines soon. I'll run steps from the spreaders to the top though. Now I know how to make them. Again Great videos.
P.S. Where did you get that rivet gun and spring?
I borrowed that rivet gun from the guy that helped me to build the mast steps. He has a lot of tools on his catamaran...It's a really nice thing to have, I am thinking about getting one...one day :)
awesome ..
Nike & Karl, you make quite the couple,
Nice video. I've never seen anyone cut aluminum with a table saw. Did Leo use a specific blade for that? Also, how thick is the aluminum? thanks
well, he just used a normal blade for wood which is actually not soooo great, but it was the only one he had. For the thickness I need to go and measure. I'll let you know...
lol, well I won't go out and try it, but good to know in a pinch, if you get the measurements thanks.
Your video series is fun to watch.
btw, is that gentleman sailing that catamaran by himself?
From time to time, yes. But also with other people. It's a really nice aluminium Catamaran...
The entire time I lived in Panama the electricity was kind of a wild card. I wouldn't say 50/50 chance of power going out, but sometimes very close to that......
very nice............
Well it's about time. I was beginning that you were the victim of foul play or a sailing accident. I'm glad that you are doing well and finally enjoying the sea. Keep up the posts. We are all living vicariously through you!
tressss belle inside out...
Hey Nike, with entry into the 5th decade comes, at times, a little more mature look on your face. I love it. I believe that you are a full woman now. How very nice.
Did that sandwich taste as good as it looked?
