  • The culmination of the segment-defining compact roadster from Mercedes-Benz: the SLC. For this video, we jump in and explore the facelift, what made this model what it is and tell you everything you need to know about the car, equipment, options, engines and what to consider when looking at the Approved Used market.
    Join us for a ride through the history of the model via memory lane for a certain presenter.

    Things left on the cutting room floor as the "Director's cut" was about 45 minutes long:
    Engines: the 180 doesn't feel slow with the 9-speed auto but the extra power and torque from the 200 is certainly noticeable. The 300 petrol feels more relaxed as it doesn't need to be worked quite as hard to get moving and the additional overtaking performance is very handy. The 250 d though is probably my pick of the range (all variants considered) for having sky high MPG figures and nearly as much torque as the 43. They are quite sought after and quite rightly so!
    The SLC 43: Fitted with its biturbo V6 engine, the model arrived with 367 hp before being bumped up to 390 hp sometime in 2018/2019. It can go very quickly from an effortlessly capable GT in 9th gear to dropping multiple ratios and launching forward like a missile. The steering and ride is even sharper; the exhaust note and performance is simply addictive. 30+ MPG is possible on a long cruise and half that when driving enthusiastically.
    Final Edition Premium: This option builds on the rather well-appointed Final Edition by adding the Harman Kardon surround system, LED lights, COMAND Online infotainment, the glass vario-roof, AIRGUIDE, folding mirrors and the reversing camera.
    Uncommon options: Keyless entry is signified by the chrome tops of the door handles - this was standard on Final Edition Premium models. The clock on top of the dash - it's a must have for me!
    Magic Sky Control was also briefly available as an option for the SLC although I've never seen one with it. This uses an electrochromic panel in the glass roof section to dim the roof at the touch of a button. No sunblind was ever offered for the glass roof as far as I'm aware.
    The manual transmission: the parking brake must be selected/deselected by the driver at the end/start of each journey. Switching off the engine and opening the door will not automatically engage the parking brake. The throw between ratios is nice and short with the biting point about two thirds of the way down the clutch pedal's travel.
    Sport specification: This was available from launch until 2018 before being dropped with AMG Line becoming the standard style/equipment package. SLC 200 and SLC 250 d were available as Sport models.
    Folding mirrors: These were optional! All models came with electric mirror adjustments but I have seen many highly-specified SLCs that didn't have the box for folding mirrors ticked.
    Jobs for the facelift: Bring it back! The electric sports cars are coming. Let's hope some sort of EQ SLC will arrive in the future.
    Other servicing/maintenance tidbits: the SLK 250 CDI/SLC 250 d had their AdBlue reservoir in the lower part of the boot. The rearmost windows do close all the way when the roof is raised unlike in the 2nd generation model!
    Number of times "SLK" was mentioned in this video: 22.

    R172 SLKs are an absolute joy to own and drive. I bought a 2014 in 2020 and plan to drive the wheels off of it.

    Love my 19, it's a downgrade from my sl500 but for the money it's well worth it , the 500 was more of a status thing for other mercedes owners ,this one turns just as many heads fun as hell for weekend cruises down at the beach for a hell if a lot less money and maintenance cost so for me anyway its a win win

    My favourite is the SLK 350, a decent balance of power and running costs.I think the 420 BHP of the 55 is a bit excessive in this country,although the sound is superb.The best SLC has to be the 43.although I did have a 300 for a while and found it quick enough.I find the sweet spot for me for this type of car is around 300 BHP.

    I've got a 99 slk 230 in yellow, an r172 12 slk 250 in grey metallic, and this little guy in yellow, would be a nice upgrade and replace both.

    I have a R172 2012 SLK 55 AMG and it has all that is shown there for a 2020 car, not that I give a shit, love my 55 with that ballsy bark when you put the foot down and sink further backwards into the seat. Good review though, 👍.

    Thx for a nice review. I am in the marked for a Slk or Slc. I am in some doubt if I should choice the Slk350 or the Slc 300. I do like the V6 sound very much and a V6 always runs smooth but as I can understand the Slc also should have a nice sound in the dynamic mode. What would be your choice of the 2 models and please explain why.

      A great and tough question! The SLC has infotainment which is a little more futureproof than the SLK but the 3.5 litre engine is wonderful. I found that the fuel economy of the SLC 300 was nearly identical on mixed routes to the SLK 350 but the extra two gears in the SLC make for super quiet motorway running. My sensible head says test drive them both and see what you think of the engines. The petrolhead and lover of a big naturally aspirated engine in a small chassis says SLK 350 for the effortless performance and tremendous noise. Just ensure that all recalls have been carried out and a good main dealer or specialist service history is essential too.

      It's a Fossil Nate Chronograph which I bought in 2014 and it's been on my wrist ever since! Expect a battery to last 2 years max with this watch though - the gunmetal grey version is very much on my wishlist. It has been the subject of many comments and yours is the first positive one!

    I have a 2017 SLC 250D bought secondhand in July 2022 with 22,000 on the clock.
    Around eight weeks ago Apple Car Play stopped working...... I can still get Spotify thro my IPhone connected by the lead into the first usb under the central armrest, but no other apps on Car Play.
    Can you tell me please, what's going on, how do I restore Apple Car Play ?

    • @LandLAutomotive
      @LandLAutomotive  Рік тому +3

      This happens sometimes - try pressing the TEL button next to the CD slot, press it again and it should bring up a rotating menu. Twist the COMAND wheel around until you see Apple CarPlay then select it - that should sort it!

      Even the local Mercedes Benz dealership couldn't fix it as easy as this. 👍

    • @LandLAutomotive
      @LandLAutomotive  6 місяців тому +3

      We're almost the same height so you'll fit in just fine! I always have the seat as low as possible and almost as far back as it can possibly go with the backrest quite upright. There will still be an inch or two above your head and the steering wheel extends quite far out so you should easily be able to get comfortable.

    who orders such a base model final edition car? halogen headlights in 2019? mercedes sportscar with a manuel? o.O really curious.

    • @LandLAutomotive
      @LandLAutomotive  Рік тому +3

      Xenon and LED headlights on SLKs and SLCs have always been surprisingly rare in the UK! I believe that the SLC 43 Final Edition was the last AMG available with halogen lights in the UK...this information may come in handy in an obscure automotive trivia quiz someday.
