Still chokes me up, 34 years on. Basic human right, freedom most of us take for granted.

The simple joy of being able to travel inside your own bloody country after all that time! I can't even begin to imagine how that felt even seeing and hearing the people living it. I was a young teenager when this happened and will remember the day I heard about it on the news in the US as long as I live.

Watching this from America. Saw it live as a10-year-old. Today, I believe the West has devolved into a Cold War and now is less free than this day, 1989. So I watching to cheer myself. Brings tears to my eyes.

This is why the right to protest peacefully is so important.

Let's remember & give credit to 🇵🇱🇵🇱 POLAND'S SOLIDARITY MOVEMENT in the 1980's with Lech Walesa as it's leader for it's independence movement from communism oppression. POLAND was the 1ST. COUNTRY in the Soviet block that STOOD UP to RUSSIA'S REGIME. After the success of Poland other countries followed including Germany. LONG LIVE POLAND 🇵🇱 🇵🇱 🇵🇱

Hi @MikaComments! You`re right, if the Solidarność movement hadn't gone ahead, other countries might not have had the chance of independence.

I was less than 11 months old when the Berlin Wall fell. Wow, what a momentous moment for German and European history. Although it didn't lead to a reunited Germany straight away, it did mark the symbolic end of end of the Cold War. The reunion of friends and families after being separated for 28 years, it chokes me up. I can't imagine how it felt for Germans that night

America and Ronald Reagan did more to bring down the Berlin Wall than Gorbachev did. Yes, Mikhail was pushing reforms, but only "socialism with a human face". It was President Reagan who said to the Soviet Union, "if you seek peace, if you seek prosperity...open this gate! Tear down this wall!"

People back then valued freedom and fought for it….having experienced life in a dictatorship…..today people try to give away freedom and democracy….insane….

Do you have an idea what could be the cause of that change of mind? 🤔

@@DWHistoryandCulture there is no definitive answer……but……people …living in a free, imperfect society…..often take it for granted….using those freedoms to protest and try to change those imperfections….dictatorships…..you have no freedoms….but you have an illusion of societal order…no social chaos…..in return …you sacrifice your right to change that order or to publicly voice your opinions that might be contrary to the state….and face prison….permanently. Russia…good example…..became a brief democracy in early 1990s….fought its own military to save its new freedoms after Communism….then because of the terrible economic conditions and poverty left by Communism…..those same people….gave up the fight for democracy and allowed Putin to come to power…..life became better for people in the cities over the decades….at the cost of individual political choice and freedoms. Now we see what that got the Russian people….when one man…Putin…seriously damages Russia by starting an unpopular war….and brutally suppressing any dissent. Since he is a “dictator’ …he can do whatever he wants….

I still get emotional thinking about how all this came to be, seemingly out of no where. And then the next year, the Scorpions band came out with their beautiful song Wind of Change. About that magical day. I wish the same could happen now in Israel, with the Palestinians being set free like this!

I remember staying awake until 2:30 AM watching this historic moment on cable television. Seeing the happy faces of East German citizens entering West Berlin is priceless!

Germans were such an annoyance between 1914 and 1989. One thing after another.
