I just graduated from UCSD with a Mathematics-Computer Science major. Throughout this video, I go over my experience being a computer science major (or math-computer science major exactly). Alot of people wonder about the difference between a regular computer science major and a mathematics-computer science major. Specifically, at ucsd, computer science and engineering major (CSE) focuses primarily on pure computer science, where as mathematics-computer science focuses on developing more mathematically oriented computer science students.
I've learned to love my major, including both the practical computer science principles as well as the more abstract mathematical topics. This video was inspired by a comment on one of my last videos, so shout out to Mu's for the computer science major suggestion.
Throughout my 4 years at ucsd, I've faced many obstacles and challenges with being a computer science major, including both time commitments on assignments as well as more existential questions about why I want to study mathematics and computer science. I've been very fortunate in my software engineering internships that have helped shape me, and ultimately supported my developing career path.
Comment down below what you thought of the video and if you have any more questions!

Congratulations on graduating! Your videos are really helping me make the choice/ gain context between majoring in Supply Chain Management or Computer Science. Thanks!
Thank you! And good luck!
just found your channel & your content is so well done! also you make a lot of good points in this video
Thanks so much!
Congratz on graduating!!! Well deserved :)
Thanks so much!
This is the perfect video as an incoming stem freshman, thank you so much!
Glad you liked it! Thanks so much!
congrats in graduating! after watching SAO, I was convince to become a computer science major at UCSD lmao
Thanks! And honestly SAO is a great show haha
I was undeclared as an incoming freshman at UCSD this year and I always planned to be a CSE major but after this video I have officially declared my major as Math-CS. Thank you for this because I feel much more reassured and happy with my decision!
hey just wanted to ask, you posted your comment a year ago, hows it going so far man!
^^^
I’ve already watched this video but it still recommends me this video. You sir have broke the algorithm
hahah I hope so
congratulations on graduating !! 👏🏻🎉
Thank you so much!
Congrats on your graduation. You're living and I'm coming. Based on what you've said, my choice was Data Science due to so many options I can join after my graduation. Warren College.
Thanks man! That’s awesome, I think if data science was offered as a major when I started at UCSD, I definitely would have considered going that major!
subscribed!. Great channel ❤
Awesome! Thank you!
Thank you bro, like for real! SUBSCRIBED ✅
Thanks and welcome!
awesome vid! not a computer science major but i enjoyed watching either way lol
This video is calming my nerves.
Aye glad you liked it!
Just switched majors to comp sci. I’m excited cuz accounting felt like I would have no meaning.
That’s awesome! Good luck!
Nice, now I can rest assured
Love that!
23:05 So true. Will doing research experiences help with getting internships btw?
Im currently stuck on if I should accept my math-cs appearance at ucsd. It seems very appealing but i am worried I may really have a lack of cs knowledge by going down this route. I want to go into ML and DS for my carrer path so I feel the math may be useful. Any recommendations you have for someone struggling with this decision? Honestly don't mind if its not all cs but if it is basically a math major with a couple cs classes at surface level im worried I may be losing out a lot.
What do you recommend community college students do? I'm considering majoring in computer science but I have to take baby steps, so I'm starting by taking a computer science course next semester. I'm trying to explore at this point as I have a lot of interests (I wanted to be a veterinarian for the longest time, then was into technology throughout middle school, then I developed a passion for psychology, but knowing I don't have good career prospects or the skills needed for a career in psychology, and since I'm becoming interested in tech again I'm considering computer science. I'm also rediscovering my love for math, and I feel like if I did go into psychology, my math and comp sci skills would be needed since I'd be doing research).
Ya I think starting off in an intro computer science class is a great approach to see if you like it first. I personally think computer science is a great field to study because the hard skills you learn can be applied to so many other areas. If you are still unsure, I'd say look into the potential careers (or which companies) that you'd want to go into. Then think about which major or which set of skills would help you (in the greatest way) to get there. Hope that helps a little bit!
I just got accepted into UCSD as a mathematics-cs major(my first choice was CS)!! I am still considering going to UCI for pure CS or UCSD for Math-CS. I really have the fantasy with UCSD, however, I am not sure if Math-CS is a lot different than pure CS. If you could give me some advice that will be awesome!! Great video btw!!
Thanks and congrats! You should look at the classes you'll take as a Math-CS major here catalog.ucsd.edu/curric/MATH-ug.html. Overall, math-cs students take many more math classes and less CS classes compared to CSE majors.
1:04 I GOT YOU
10:35 lmaooo ima go through this huh 😂
Since CSE classes are restricted and Math-CS majors don’t get priority, did you find it really hard to get into classes about computer networks, operating systems, or computer security?
From my knowledge if the class is a requirement for your math-cs major, both cse and math-cs students get priority. If you are looking to take a CSE class as an elective and not a requirement, I have noticed that it can be harder. I never took any of the classes you stated, but I did try to get into a CSE machine learning class my senior year and I was told I had to wait until there were no CSE students on the waitlist basically.
Are you gonna make a vid about studying abroad? I think Edinburgh or Glasgow are my ultimate dream to see!
I've actually made a couple videos about studying abroad, they are a little older because I made them before getting my new camera but if you are interested you can check out some of them!

@@ByteOfMichael oh! I didn't even know haha thank you so much for the links!! :D
i’m going to be a senior in high school and want to major in comp science, what would you recommend to begin before college to prepare? BTW my school doesn’t offer AP Comp Science :(
I’d go through some free resources, like UA-cam videos or freecodecamp.org to make sure you like it. Then maybe follow along with the ap computer science curriculum if you are interested. I’d suggest starting with Java as a beginner language as it’ll help you in college (depending on the beginner cs classes at your college)
Are VIM and UNIX the main tools used in your major? I'm the same major but I use VScode primarily.
In the intro classes, we mostly used VIM and UNIX. As you move to upper division classes they usually don't care!
So is your dream job at TwoSigma? :D I have also started learning how to trade when I was senior HS. I opened a TD paper trading account and got so interested in finance. That's interesting because quant trading and AI was the only motivation for me to attend to ECE at UCSD. I appreciate the video btw! Is UCSD good in finance fields? Do you think I can find a good quant trading community maybe like trading club/competitions? I would love to start a little quant trading club at UCSD.
Congratulations bro!! keep up the great work
Would you mind If I can connect with you on Linkin?
Ya of course feel free to connect with me! I wish I got more into quant trading specifics in highschool, but there are definitely investment clubs at UCSD but idk about any specific quant trading clubs. I originally wanted my major to be finance but UCSD doesn’t have a finance major, instead international business is a popular major in that area. I’d definitely suggest starting a quant trading club, I think that would be super cool!
congratulations on graduating.
UCLA vs UCSD vs Georgia tech for masters in computer science?
If we just look at the rankings according to us news and world report for each program we can see that Georgia tech computer science masters program is ranked #8 in the country whereas UCLA is ranked #13 and UCSD is ranked #16. So the best could be arguably Georgia tech but you should also consider price and quality of life (i.e would you like living in Georgia vs. California)
I’m planning to do cyber security major at Ucsd. What are your thoughts on that.
I think cyber security is a great field, but I don't know if that's an option for undergrad :/
Hey, I’m an incoming freshman @ Revelle. Interested in CS but I’m afraid I’m not good enough at math. I would like to think I’m pretty smart but my pre-cal and calc classes were the only ones I ever got B’s in. If I struggled in math in HS is that a warning sign that I should pick a different major? Were you crazy at math in HS?
I wasn’t a savant at math or anything in highschool, but math was probably my favorite subject. I think if you put in the effort, anyone can become a high performing math student! I’d say don’t quit until you try!
Heyy Bro ❤. I'm from India. I want to do engineering in USA because in India engineering environment isn't good. I'm interested in computer science. I'm currently in 11th Grade (16yo) what can i do from now to get into ucsd.
The admissions process and criteria could have definitely changed since I was admitted. I would say good advice is to do well in classes/admission exams and do extracurriculars (like sports, clubs, projects etc.) to help your application stand out. Here's a link to more insight into the admissions process at UCSD and the student body admissions.ucsd.edu/first-year/index.html, hope this helps a lil!
@@ByteOfMichael in ucsd do they give need blind/need aware scholarships to international students because my financial condition isn't that good
It depends, but I’m pretty sure for out-of-state and international students, financial aid is pretty restricted unfortunately
Were you in any student organizations at UCSD, or do you recommend any?
I was a founding member of the Major Map Initiative, which is a software/social club that's based around helping students plan their major path easier. It was awesome to start with my 2 friends and it has grown to around 15 members this year, so if that sounds cool definitely check that out. I also went to a couple events for the UCSD gaming organization which were super fun! Though since the school year is mostly remote as of now, I'm not sure how student orgs/greek life are handling that. Good luck!
Were you paid in your internships?
Yep I was paid in both internships! My first internship I wasn’t paid anything crazy high, but my second internship I was paid significantly higher by comparison
Does participation in students orgs look good on a resume? Is that the best way to participate in software projects?
I'm not a recruiter or hiring manager, but I think it can't hurt! And there are some software engineering clubs out there that work on projects together, but you can equally just work on your own project with a few friends without being a proper org!
@@ByteOfMichael oh cool thanks for responding! Also, if you were a founding member of an org, is that sth you would put on your resume?
u look like u can be stefan salvatore's little brother
