    From day one of college to graduating from home, I’ll show you my entire Bachelor of Science in Data Science degree journey as a college student at UC San Diego (UCSD).
    Specifically, I’ll explain the background behind the specific college I was in and then go into my entire curriculum.
    So with some background, I went to the University of California San Diego, which had a 6 college system. The college system at UCSD is unique in that students are not required to live in the same college that their major is in.
    In my case, I was in Revelle College, which is primarily for biology and chemistry majors since the biology and chemistry lecture halls and research buildings are located here.
    In retrospect, it was great that I was in Revelle since I got to naturally meet other students outside of data science, and some of the people I met are still really good friends to this day.
    So the Halicioglu Data Science Institute and the Data Science program were created in 2017. So it’s a relatively new major to UCSD.
    In fact, I was part of the first graduating class of Data Science majors at UCSD. Since it was a new major, I ended up taking computer science classes my first year because I was initially interested in studying computer science.
    So I’ll go over my entire curriculum.
    Part of my coursework included Data Structures and Object-Oriented Design, Mathematics for Algorithms and Systems, Machine Learning, Recommender Systems and Web Mining, Data Science in Practice, Data Management, and Data Visualization.
    Some of my most interesting and valuable courses I took are the following:
    I took Data Science Project 2, which is part 2 of the Senior Capstone sequence.
    In this course in particular, I implemented the project while studying the best practices for evaluation.
    I worked with a group on our final project, which was to predict disease risk for 3 diseases, which are Coronary Artery Disease, Alzheimer’s, and Diabetes, using machine learning.
    We compared how various machine learning models performed in predicting disease risk across low, medium, and high risk for each disease.
    This course was the culmination of all the data science concepts I learned from the previous courses.
    I really enjoyed this course since I got to apply data science and machine learning to the healthcare and genetics industries and work on a group project that I can include in my portfolio to show to prospective employers to showcase my data science skills.
    I also took Spatial Data Science and Applications.
    This course taught spatial data analysis, including geographic information systems or GIS, spatial big data management, and geostatistics.
    I worked with a friend on the final project, which was to determine if there is a correlation between clean streets using the Los Angeles Clean Streets Index and other city features, such as household median income and crime locations.
    I learned how to use Python spatial data science packages, such as ArcGIS from Esri, GeoPandas, PySal, and more. I really enjoyed this course since I learned a type of data science that was new to me and an interesting application of data science.
    I took the Human Computer Interaction Portfolio Design Studio.
    This course allowed students to create a personal portfolio of product design projects for web and mobile, work on oral presentations, and practice pitches to stakeholders.
    I worked with the same group from the previous course to work on our final project called Music Master, which was a music recommendation platform that would recommend similar songs based on beats per minute, or BPM, or song title to help music artists create a curated playlist for their next gig.
    I also took Exploratory Data Analysis and Inference.
    This course taught how to process, analyze, and visualize data using statistical language R. It also taught hypothesis testing, bootstrap methods, inference, sampling, regression, and diagnostics.
    I worked with a group on the final project, which was the Google Cloud and NCAA ML Competition to determine specific features that most influence a team’s performance throughout the season and use these top features to predict the March Madness bracket with some baseline accuracy.

    Great video! I'm starting this fall at MSU and I'm confused about the future prospects since most jobs require a master's/PhD.

    Data science is on my list for grad school. Right now I’m a junior in computer science

    Do you recommend doing a undergraduate program in computer science and then doing a masters in data science? Or would it be better to do an undergraduate program in data science as well? Thank you.

      Congrats and good luck on your Data Science program! For sure, my program taught calculus since it was required for all engineering majors and stats since it's used frequently in data science. Where are you taking your program, if I may ask?

    bro could you provide with a data visualisation or something for the employment of UCSD DS students

    Thanks for the video. You took many lower level CS classes, I see now data science curricula has more DS classes. Do you think DS classes are weaker than similar CS ones on the software engineer skills?

    • @datasciencegraduate432
      @datasciencegraduate432  3 роки тому +2

      Hi Daqing, thanks for watching! I would say it's not weaker on software engineer skills at least in the lower division courses since I still learned object-oriented programming, data structures, and algorithms in my DS classes. As for the upper division DS classes, it focused more on DS concepts, such as ML, Than CS concepts, such as compilers.

      @@datasciencegraduate432 If I want to take a class in Operating Systems or Compilers in CS, it is hard to get in the class as a DS major?

    • @datasciencegraduate432
      @datasciencegraduate432  3 роки тому +1

      I'm not sure of the exact process on how to enroll in a class in Operating Systems or Compilers as a DS major, but I would imagine that it would be difficult to enroll since those classes are upper-division courses, which are generally reserved for CS majors only

    Would you consider math 183 and 189 calc/linear algebra heavy?

      Hi Ryan, thanks for the question. No, 183 and 189 are more stats heavy and less on calc/linear algebra

    How was the internship/ job prospects being a Data Science major?

    • @datasciencegraduate432
      @datasciencegraduate432  3 роки тому

      Hi Victor, for me, the internship and job prospects were on par with those for a Computer Science major since I was also open to applying for Software Engineering Internships in addition to Data Science internships. If you're looking for only Data Science internships and jobs, then it'll narrow the number of opportunities since, at least in my experience, most Data Science internships and jobs were catered towards Master's and PhD candidates. I still applied to these roles, but that's something to keep in mind as you're on the internship/job search.
