- Hayle estuary and harbour sit in the centre of St Ives Bay, at the mouth of the river of the same name.
The name, Hayle, is derived from the Cornish word Heyl, literally meaning “estuary”. The town came to prominence in the 19th century as an important trading port for the local tin mines.
The area has historical links with Ireland, believed to be the landing point for St Petroc amongst other Irish saints.
