@2:44 We were removing Rear Suspension Axle Beam on Pick-n-Pull yard today, and what surprised me that after the emergency break cable was cut, we couldn't remove the drums. I expected that if it was cut the emergency break system is disabled, but now I see that actually it was left in a locked position. Thank you very much for so informative film.
This video should have 1 million mechanics views... shame on the mechanics who don't know about brakes and have not watched this video... boo to them. this is a classy well-elaborated brake system master class
Wow! I was curious what the assembly of a parking brake looks like and I was expecting to see something pretty schematic after a search, but this video went above and beyond to show exactly how every piece works. I loved how you kept going deeper and followed each part to the next then even pointed out even the little parts like the limit switch that turns the dashboard parking brake light on. Super easy to follow and informative. Beautiful video, even if the brakes themselves weren't very "beautiful" anymore. Ha ha!
I've done pads and rotors on mine and my wife's cars 20 times or more. I however have never had to repair/replace the parking brake assembly. Time to learn something 👍🏼
Bro you get into nuts and bolts man no fancy freaking theory just straight up boom boom thank you. Hey we're in the heck do you live with all that rust Good Lord
ThqNks so much for the video .. at 4:00 you have showed the hand brake piece was secured by the metal , is that really secure? Or durable? .. yesterday I got in my car and I accidentally holding it to adjust myself on the seat .. by applying little pressure on it , will I do any damage to it?
👍great!! Just the info i needed to get started some lame car cleaner guys messed my parking brake pedal on my classic stupid guys couldn't open the hood & wacked my pedal in the process
What happens if I drive-off from a stop light, with the e-brake still engaged? My 2019 Kia Forte set-off a warning sound and visual. Was the e-brake damaged, do you think? Thanks, and great videos!
What about in a electronic park brake? And i noticed in some cars there are two disc brake caliper on the rear wheel, is that something to do with parking brake?
The disc caliper on the rear works the same as the fronts. On vehicles with electronic parking brakes, a motor sits behind the caliper piston and a screw drives the pad to clamp against the rotor.
So, if the parking brake is pulled, can the rotor still come off? I ask because I pulled rear rotors off a 2015 BMW 328i the new rotors would not go on. I went and got rotors from a different auto parts store and they are the same rotors. I am thinking the parking brake was on and expanded which is why I could not get the new rotor on.
Oh hey random comment, I was watching vids where a mechanic was testing fuel pressure and one car had a fuel rail service port and the other didn't so you had to unhook the fuel hose. Maybe worthwhile pointing out if cars have fuel rail service ports when you do your mechanical reviews.
Thanks for the suggestion. That's kinda overlooked now a days. Most fuel rails have a pressure sensor that you'll read through OBD. Similarly the EVAP service port exists but it's rarely used
Mine's been sticking and when it releases it does so with a loud thump from below. Now, that I've seen this I'm wondering if it might not be one (or more) of those 6 points of contact not being well lubricated. My mechanic just told me to let the transmission hold the car, but I've seen how small that piece of metal is that does that.
Yes please see my parking brake replacement video on how to service your brakes! If you release it when you are on a hill you will get some noise as the weight is transferred back to the parking pawl
@@speedkar99 I forgot to say that this will sometimes happen after I have already been driving it for a few seconds thinking that it had already released. Ok, I will watch that, Thank you!
My car just has a tab on the rear calipers to accept the parking brake cable which seems like a way simpler setup than having a separate drum brake inside the rotor. Is there any advantage to the drum style though?
They both get the job done. On newer cars I'm seeing the caliper mounted design more which is simplier. However I don't like that you need that special tool to reset the caliper when you change pads.
Replaced my E brake pads on my car which the brake looks almost identicle to what is shown in this video. When i pull the e brake, if you look at one side of the vehicle, i noticed that only one of the break pads expands, not both of them in the single assembly. Is this normal?
@@speedkar99 Any plans on demonstrating an electronic parking break? Does it use the same mechanism or something different? Or have you done a video on this already? I’m a chemical engineer so I love these mechanical explanations. Thanks.
so it need a slight drag when adjusting the e brakes? i recently adjusted mine that the wheel spins freely with the e brakes off but then i notice my ebrake lever pulls up easily and way to high.
Can you clarify where the return tension is generated to retract the shoes back to the "brake off" position? When I release the pedal it does not seem to release the brakes and I have replaced the drum hardware and shoes.
You need to determine if hydraulic pressure is keeping the brake shoes applied or some mechanical issue. I would start by loosening the brake line at the wheel cylinder, this will release any hydraulic pressure that might be trapped in the brake line and holding the brakes on. If loosening the brake line does not release the brakes, then it Is time to look for some mechanical problem like rust or roughness on the backing plate where the brake shoes slide. You stated that you already installed new springs, be sure they are installed in the correct positions.
I mean, did you learn something? If someone gets paid to be a teacher and they don't teach you shit, are they a teacher? I don't mean to be philosophical, I'm just sayin'...
I went about 1/2 of a block up a steep hill(that I was parked on) with my parking brake on, it was a big mistake for a seasoned driver like me. How much damage could I have done and how would I know without having it looked at?
1/2 a block probably not bad at all. Try parking on the steepest hill you can find and see if you get any slippage. If not just have a mechanic check it out next time you get the regular brakes serviced. If it slips then you may want to take her in sooner rather than later.

Started driving very recently and I'm suddenly interested in the mechanism of everything in my car. Lovely video! Thanks.
Was not ready for this level of depth. I've learned every singular part in the assembly wow. Thank you sir

So the parking brake is the same thing as drum brakes...
You brake with it and park...
In this style yes. Other styles use an actuator on the caliper itself
so in ebrake, there will be some solenoid thing to pull n release cable?
A motor turns a spiral actuator to press on the brake pad against the rotor.
My car just has a tab on the rear calipers to accept the parking brake cable which seems like a way simpler setup than having a separate drum brake inside the rotor. Is there any advantage to the drum style though?
