Loving the care and attention paid this segment by BMW. City/small van segment is warming up (new Caddy, ID Buzz). Now, bring that thing to the states!
Very interesting Interieur approach (even with glowing H&K Logo) and nice styling for a Van. But I really miss the idrive controller. Every modern BMW has to have it! That’s a Nogo for me and I just hope that they leave the controller for the other models
Have changed my business car because of this idrive controller. Audi don`t have it anymore so I had to go for an BMW G21. Used 1,5 years the touchscreen madness of Audi and right now I´m really happy with the OS7 and that controller in my BMW.
This is a very unique recipe for a car and I personally think bmw nailed it... I'd call it a hot compact estate. :D They do need to increase the appeal of this model in comparison to x1/x2/x3 to keep its sales, though. Fantastic review as always
Brilliant review Thomas - so much detail… the car costs less than I was expecting because our UK dealers have included all the extras that we do not really need -Head Up Display, adaptive lights etc, £45,000. I can get a decent version with panoramic sunroof for £33,000, same as a Golf, but more luxurious. 41:02
Very helpful and detailed review. Had the F45 and just ordered U06 MSport. After watching this, I am really looking forward tk taking delivery. Thanks.
For me this is the most decent and timeless design of recent bmw s. Even the M line spooilers fit well and follow the flow of lines. Its literally the opposite of the new bmw 2er coupe.
Would be interesting to see a comparison with Golf SV (although it is no longer on sale so it may be difficult) or the B class. Also I think the car looks great. I genuinely like this segment of vehicles, small but still very practical.
My mom had the Sporstvan Golf before switching to a T-Roc and I honestly miss the Sporstvan. It had the small 115 cv 1.6 tdi but I wouldn’t mind driving it instead of my BMW. Her 2 liter T-roc just isn’t the same, although I think they nailed the coupe crossover look, and it’s dark blue with dark wheels and aluminium trim. Just tiny on the inside, in the Sporstvan you saw a lot while seating low.
I own this very same model in the hybrid version since beginning June, fully equipped incl sunroof and after 5000 kms I have to say I’m very satisfied either in performance and comfort as well. I’m 73 years old and this car returned me to the satisfaction to drive without feeling nostalgic to my previous Audi100, several A4 too, Volvo and MB C200. Regarding to space, it has been a nice surprise in all senses. My only complaint: the BMW voice assistance is disturbing more than a help since does not recognise most of the common questions and remains repetitively questioning. Often I try both, bmw and Siri assistance and in all cases Siri is more accurate by far.
Our cats look quite similar, we are common in many things like I mention everytime. Fantastic review as always, you are my most favorite car reviewer and sure a great guy to go for a drink and best friendship! Stay safe!
Awesome review as always!! I’m super confused between the latest BMW 2 series Active Tourer and the latest Mercedes Benz B Class. Any suggestions there Thomas? Also, it’s a pity that such a comparison video doesn’t exist from Autogefühl, it would really be great to have one with the latest MB B Class also launched.
Great car actually. I would prefer it to any crossover of that size. It still has decent ground clearence (171mm), more than many "cross" vehicles, like the Toyota Corolla Cross for instance, and AWD.... Has lots of practicality, looks good, nice equipment and sportiness. Basically, a great family all-rounder for a relatively affordable price. Seems strange that BMW makes these.... As always, great review Thomas!
How do I listen to a usb because this 225e xdrive active tourer 2023 73 plate does not have the usual USB ports it's got different ones. How can I listen to my USB?
Ordered a 230 last week. Drive-tested a petrol one, with the added boost and the electric range, it's the perfect package and the perfect alternative to a SUV, which I'm not really fond of. Considering weight is going to play a role in car taxation very soon, owning a 2 ton SUV (and more) is not going to be pretty. I therefore believe MPVs are bound to have a big comeback. Coming from an AR Giulia Veloce, I now need a more practical car (one car instead of two with retirement in sight), but driving one of these lumpish SUVs (and parking it in ever smaller public spaces) wasn't exactly what I had in mind. ;-)
Good choice. Fun fact: This has 171mm ground clearance. Same or more of most crossovers/suvs of the same length. So you aren't losing much not going "suv" anyway.
Just taken delivery after 7 month wait list. This car has presence from the front - cars are giving way to me, which is nice as I am not an aggressive driver.
Great review. And it seems BeMWe 2 nailed as front wheels drive car. Even Thomas can't find properly worth match to this. Impressed. And Thomas blue 🔵 looks 👍. And I wonder did I missed on video motorway sound insulation? Wind and road noises ? It's seems well insulated? And one more. I always miss conclusions. This one was really short 😃
Premium, but less now. Since July 2023 all BMW Series 2 Active Tourer cars (U06) had entered into a cost cutting phase. The car as presented in the is not looking the same now. For example they remove - the glovebox light and currently there is hole there, - the nice stitching on the door panels, - the door sills and the wing M badges (for M sport trim) - and many others that are not easily observed. It's a pity since it is the last german car manufacturer that was still keeping the small car segment still with a premium feeling, not just by the price.
Thomas i love your reviews! When do u think will Bmw reveal the next generation X1? Will it have the same interior and engines with the 2 series active tourer? Thank u 🙏
Dear Thomas, another excellent review and a nice matching outfit :) I am watching this and the CX-30 review over and over again because I face a rather beautiful but difficult dilemma. I have to pick between the following: Option A: BMW 223i M sport package almost all imaginable bells and whistles (panoramic, tow hook, massage chairs, adaptive suspension, all driving assist packs, harman, 5yr warranty, extra set of winter tyres and rims, etc.) Price: my tradein + 22k EUR Option B: Mazda CX-30 skyactiv-X 2WD (186hp) top luxury line + sunroof (not panoramic as it is not an option) + some other nice stuff (tow hook, recording camera, 5yr warranty, extra set of winter tyres and rims, etc.) Price: my trade-in + 11k EUR Which one would YOU choose as a sole car to own for the next 4-5 years? If, by any chance, any of the other people in this lovely chat care to share an opinion (preferably after having driven or owned both), it would help a lot. Danke
I see… it depends on your budget ofc. Both offer driving fun. The BMW gives u more premium feeling, but is it worth the money for u? Can u get both with animal free seating?
@@autogefuehl Thanks so much for replying. Well, if I couldn't afford the BMW at all, I wouldn't have the dilemma; my original budget was for 15k out-of-pocket, one is lower, one is higher than that but within reasonable margins. I can get the BMW with animal-free seating and it would actually cost less (now it's configured with the leather and I start to feel ashamed about it as I write) but for the mazda it is mandatory in the top trim as far as I know so I might not be able to do so (and I know you said at least for the Mazda that the non-leather seats are better). I guess there should be "some" (even if only 1-2-3k) difference in the resale value in 4-5 years also, which would make the "gap" narrower.
Against all those compoact/mid crossovers of course. Priced this on the UK BMW configurator - shocked at the price. It cam out very reasonable! Obvs a oractical buy without being totally boring.
Agree, the luxury line feels much more elegant...and i am hoping a little softer suspension too but will not know for sure until demo PHEV models are available.
I like the new( revised) m sport steering wheel first time, i believe ,introduced in this car if i am not wrong. How do you compare interior to G20, does G20 looks outdated with idrive7 compared to idrive 8? Thanks
This is a “mini platform car”, these have different steering wheels than the luxury cars and 3 series. G20 doesn’t look outdated whatsoever. It’s a good design and it won’t age. Not looking like today doesn’t mean it’s outdated.
@@Brian-jv8iy previous M versions of 2 series active tourers had the same M steering wheel as 3 series, for example the 2018 models have the identical M sport steering wheel as f30. This one looks more modern then in G20
Nice review. I would recommend to give voice control a chance, because that seems to have been improved a lot. Perhaps we would not miss the manual controls if voice control works fine. I am pretty sure that the car manufacturers are working on that very hard.
Hi Thomas, can you sometimes make a comparison between the maps services in the cars. The maps in the BMW, MERC and VW should come from HERE and from my experience those maps are really good but a lot of people might prefer Google or other services. Great car and great review! Thank you!
At this point I don't really understand why the car manufacturers even spend money on developing in-house navigation systems, they are worse than google/apple in every possible way.
@@ns4529 Some may be worse, but HERE, at least the app for android, is very good. I personally like it more than Google's. Google's maps are also almost useless for commercial vehicles like trucks. About the reasons to develop navigation and software in-house, I believe they want some independence from big tech.
The old model looked like an Opel Zafira, but this lookes really much better. Specially the M model. Only you get with it also the M Sport comfort adjustement, which is for this particular model a disadvantage I think. Maybe still not BMW DNA but surely as a small family car BMW will attract even more customers. Also the inside, doesn't look anymore like a compromise between budget and brand. Really premium class. What I don't understand, is the removing of the touchpath button. Generally I liked the "old" strategy of voice, touchscreen and controller plus buttons, so for every situation you can use the best type of input. Base functions should inmediately be available, not hided in an overloaded app menu. The hybrid is impressive but how does it drive when you are on holiday and the battery is empty,; you are left with a small 3 cilinder engine and a heavy car. By the way, I would also choose Thomas Blue ;) beautiful colour.
@Ronnie Are you not a fan of the M Adaptive Suspension? Never had a BMW and trying to decide which trim to go for, luxury or M Sport.I always thought adaptive suspension meant a stiffer ride experience so that puts me off the M Sport but no demo plugin models available yet here in UK so have no idea.
Great review. When driving the 220i the engine is a mild hybrid with the 230e phev when you run out of electric range does the petrol engine run as a mild hybrid also.
Would you please compare the new BMW X1 vs the 2 Series Active Tourer. Both with their higher capacity ICE engines. In this segement, it would be very useful. Thank you.
Would love to know about the suspension too and if a firm ride? I thought the M suspension add on makes it even more stiff / sporty so that would not be for me. Comfort all the way. 2 plug in variants with £3000 price difference...not sure if worth paying £3k for top plug in model.230 e over the 225e.
Speaking of that AC button that's missing. I never understood what the AC activation does. In my Zoe I have the temperature knob, and I use that very well in summer and in winter for hot and cold. And it has also an AC toggle that I don't know what it does. Same with the previous car. Does the majority of people know, I feel a bit left out. What does it do :D
Most cars either have an AC or ECO button. This turns on or off the AC compressor which stops the refrigeration and dehumidifier features of the AC meaning better fuel economy but also means the car may struggle to reach the temperature required and the car will mist up in cold weather with old the AC on.
Do you really need to enable the boost mode with the left paddle? Or would you get the same boost when giving extra throttle input with the pedal? Does it mean it is not available in vehicles without the optional paddle shifters?
@@autogefuehl Thanks! I am thinking to order the new X1 xdrive30e for my next lease contract, and think it will have a similar boost function. Currently doubting whether I should add the M-steering wheel with the shifter paddles. Are the shifters a big added value in your opinion?
Can I drive the 225e in sport mode all the time so it doesn't deplete the battery and I can charge it once a week? Would this give me at least better fuel economy than the petrol? I drive in traffic a lot.
You didn't mention in the last reviews about the EU speed limiter coming in July. What does it really mean. Do you get to 121 and the car refuses to go faster, or does it bing both incessantly?
Sadly, no manufacturer i know of provides these. I am interested in PHEVs as well, and it is very hard finding these figures to make proper comparisons.
Looks like a an aerodynamic crossover buy the way cx is 0,26 and it helps for low fuel consumption on highway. Best ratio for length/volume without sacrificing looks.
Are people changing the temperature in the car every 5’?! I don’t understand the issue with controls on the screen, I have my Tesla set for 19 degrees and never need to change it, winter or summer.. too much drama with the controls 😀
What happens when you drive the car in slippery or winter conditions? Will it still use the electric rear wheel drive only as in dry conditions or it will change to 4wd? So my question is, isnt it dangerous for the not so experienced drivers?
Was not clear from review (230e) how the AWD was / can be activated..i am hoping it is automatic or perhaps activating the more sportier driving mode will enable it..will have to wait for more reviews.
I don’t like the added pieces of chrome trim that BMW and in particular Audi put on the front end of their M sport and S line trims. It just looks so chintzy, although it’s more tolerable when blacked out
It is really confusing that after decades of being in the car industry that some car companies still cannot build a car that doesn't have any annoying features. Why do they have to overload the system with useless features that just takes up precious memory and then they complain about he shortage of chips.
This looks like a hatchback and I'd argue that it's the 2nd most good looking car BMW makes with the 1st being the new X1. The rest of BMW models look a bit too crazy for my taste.
it is a sneak peak in the new 7 series but i would really really like that the new stuff come with it. The steering wheel is AWESOME (and i suppose the 7er will have the button in piano or metal) and the air vents are perfect, only missing thing is seat heating/vent buttons that could be made like some kind of design element (even not in plasic but something interesting, they can think about that (maybe like the current 7 series air-temperature - the sliders on the dash)) but its ok. BMW is getting really in the right direction and with next iDrive they will find that this menu on the id8 isn't useful at all.
The steering wheel definitely won’t make it outside of the cheap BMWs. Those always had separate steering wheels because of being on a different platform.
I love the fact Thomas has his cat as his phone wallpaper - my cat is also mine! I love the interior of this, definitely the best in the class bar none. Shame the iDrive controller has been binned though! Not keen on artificial leather though, no matter who makes it, you can always tell artificial leather by touch. Much better to either have real leather or no leather. The exterior is surprisingly cohesive given the new grille, let's not forget the first model wasn't a look either. I nearly purchased the first 2 Series but the MINI Countryman with the same engine and transmission was better value and better equipped.
You got a new job then here, @Sam Bomorse ! Because even manufacturer experts cant really tell us the difference when we are in talks about that. It is only possible to know if you really know about the source and know the manufacturing firm or by burning it.

@@autogefuehl one day too late :) just ordered the cx-30
Against all those compoact/mid crossovers of course. Priced this on the UK BMW configurator - shocked at the price. It cam out very reasonable! Obvs a oractical buy without being totally boring.
Acceleration is good for a car like this (0-100 in 5.5 seconds).
Pretty much every other minivan to this day does 0-100 in over 7 seconds.
Both more than fast enough
Love it. Perfect replacement for my current 2AT. Plug in hybrid engine next time.
Prefer the luxury styling, far more elegant.
M-line always felt poser-y to me. Basicly equivalent of someone buying bootleg M badges on eBay and putting them on their clapped out 316i.
Agree, the luxury line feels much more elegant...and i am hoping a little softer suspension too but will not know for sure until demo PHEV models are available.
THE FRONT END LOOKS GAWDY, JUST LIKE THE LEXUS ! C'MON MAN !
The whole thing looks really good EXCEPT, that hideous driver's display. I mean what is with that bezel?
did i miss the part about interior noise levels?
He briefly mentioned it.
Big mistake by BMW to remove the iDrive controller and put climate control functions on the touchscreen instead of physical buttons!
Thomas, thanks for the memories: I haven't seen the original Gaastra logo in a loooong time 🤙 (still have a bunch of sails in the basement 🤣)
I enjoyed watchibg the Video Review. I like the Styling and the Interior Deaign as well
That grill is a crime against humanity.
Nice review. I would recommend to give voice control a chance, because that seems to have been improved a lot. Perhaps we would not miss the manual controls if voice control works fine. I am pretty sure that the car manufacturers are working on that very hard.
Cheers m8!
😎
@Ronnie Are you not a fan of the M Adaptive Suspension? Never had a BMW and trying to decide which trim to go for, luxury or M Sport.I always thought adaptive suspension meant a stiffer ride experience so that puts me off the M Sport but no demo plugin models available yet here in UK so have no idea.
What happened to iDrive?
looks like the big grill already grow on people. no complaint here.
How do you defog inside during winter time ? Thanks
Great review. When driving the 220i the engine is a mild hybrid with the 230e phev when you run out of electric range does the petrol engine run as a mild hybrid also.
cheers!
Typically my kind of car. If you're cheap and wanna get a reliable roomy car : go honda jazz. If you want perfs, style, luxury, features go bmw
What will be the Sri Lanka price please ......?
Would you please compare the new BMW X1 vs the 2 Series Active Tourer. Both with their higher capacity ICE engines. In this segement, it would be very useful. Thank you.
Seen this? ua-cam.com/video/LbujwWGjoqw/v-deo.html
I drive an older version and love it nut this looks amazing
is the normal suspension of the Luxury version sort of comfortable to drive?
Would love to know about the suspension too and if a firm ride? I thought the M suspension add on makes it even more stiff / sporty so that would not be for me. Comfort all the way. 2 plug in variants with £3000 price difference...not sure if worth paying £3k for top plug in model.230 e over the 225e.
Did you drive the 220i ? How was it ?
I like this design. But I don’t like the black accentuated plastics on the back of the M-Sport trim.
Do you really need to enable the boost mode with the left paddle? Or would you get the same boost when giving extra throttle input with the pedal? Does it mean it is not available in vehicles without the optional paddle shifters?
U can also use kickdown yes
@@autogefuehl Thanks! I am thinking to order the new X1 xdrive30e for my next lease contract, and think it will have a similar boost function. Currently doubting whether I should add the M-steering wheel with the shifter paddles. Are the shifters a big added value in your opinion?
Hi Thomas, great review as always. Is the 7speed dual clutch as good as the 8 converter ?
Can I drive the 225e in sport mode all the time so it doesn't deplete the battery and I can charge it once a week? Would this give me at least better fuel economy than the petrol? I drive in traffic a lot.
Will the standard suspension and adding the adaptive suspension means that the car will be lowered by 15mm?
I think so
Adaptive is more comfortable though
@@autogefuehl Does the car adjust the suspension automatically to improve ride comfort? Fantastic review.
any plans to review Megane electric?
Does the FWD have torque steer under hard acceleration?
You didn't mention in the last reviews about the EU speed limiter coming in July. What does it really mean. Do you get to 121 and the car refuses to go faster, or does it bing both incessantly?
Thomas, ChilliFM? That’s why you were cold! 🤣
Is the M Adaptive Suspension worth it? (extra £1500-higher trim) or will it make the ride more stiff /less comfortable?
Nice matching blue jacket 👕
50 odd miles on EV only range sounds quite decent but i cannot find any figures for MPG once battery is flat...wish BMW be more upfront about this.
In a Mini Countryman its also not possiblecto get the HUD in the windscreen. Technically it is. But too expensive for the chassis.
Have they fixed the cooling issues?
some other guy reports the car is noisy ... also from the tyres... what is your impression?
Thank u! What is the driving assistant level??
Lvl2
The drive assist pro version is even better than tesla for me
Why they don't bring this new screens on the new 2 series coupe.. i'm sad
Waiting for the new X1. Most likely with the same interior
What happens when you drive the car in slippery or winter conditions? Will it still use the electric rear wheel drive only as in dry conditions or it will change to 4wd? So my question is, isnt it dangerous for the not so experienced drivers?
It's a front wheel drive.
@@rocket3ful The plugins are both AWD.
Was not clear from review (230e) how the AWD was / can be activated..i am hoping it is automatic or perhaps activating the more sportier driving mode will enable it..will have to wait for more reviews.
Why isn’t there going to be a 7-seater Gran Tourer version this time?
I don’t like the added pieces of chrome trim that BMW and in particular Audi put on the front end of their M sport and S line trims. It just looks so chintzy, although it’s more tolerable when blacked out
It is really confusing that after decades of being in the car industry that some car companies still cannot build a car that doesn't have any annoying features. Why do they have to overload the system with useless features that just takes up precious memory and then they complain about he shortage of chips.
That interior camera to come handy for me as a Uber driver 😂🥴
Interior looks amazing! Totally love it! Unfortunately no i2 (yet). This would work great as a full electric family car.
X1 uses the same platform. The electric iX1 will come in 2023, and I am looking forward to it.
full electric is ridiculous
Hopefully google maps will be supported in future. Can only hope.
I honestly don’t know why reviewers keep harking on about capacitive buttons. They really are not as bad as they say!
Nicely done, Thomas. I think for the money I'd prefer a Golf R
In the UK it’s against the law to use you phone other than hands free phone calls! Have BMW done away with the idrive?
Looks like somebody has pressed too hard putting the front badge on. That crease attracts the eye for all the wrong reasons.
This car looks very good. It would sell well in the US, I think. It would be great in Madagascar.
This looks like a hatchback and I'd argue that it's the 2nd most good looking car BMW makes with the 1st being the new X1. The rest of BMW models look a bit too crazy for my taste.
Reminds me of the mk2 Ford Focus, which I really liked.
No gloss black, they are listening!
M Sport models have buckets of gloss black so stick with Luxury line and you will be fine.
What is the measurements width and length? Thanks
Length is always in the review
it is a sneak peak in the new 7 series but i would really really like that the new stuff come with it.
No you can’t always tell it’s fake. Either way, I think it’s better to not have a feeling of a real dead carcass
@@Brian-jv8iy I can always tell fake leather from real.
You got a new job then here, @Sam Bomorse ! Because even manufacturer experts cant really tell us the difference when we are in talks about that. It is only possible to know if you really know about the source and know the manufacturing firm or by burning it.
