Dual lands always stay on a roughly 2 year cycle where they peak and drop off again, some similar staples also have patterns, hardly anybody invests in vintage only staples so that market is difficult to create an accurate model for, since it’s so contingent on the condition of the card, and sales are very sporadic. There are several factors that led to the spike and drop off. People had a lot of time during the pandemic, they bought into magic as a time waster. They also had some liquidity. The market was up, people weren’t spending on other forms of entertainment, there was a general sentiment towards investing in assets that were more speculative, the game also captured a lot of newer players for several of the aforementioned reasons. Now, the market isn’t doing so hot, investor confidence has been shaken by WotC’s actions, people who picked the game up during the lockdowns are back to work and inflation is eating into disposable income for many. The market for RL cards is dominated by players who have stayed in this game for years, and if WotC/Ha$bro continue to milk the universes beyond/endless spoiler season/whale milking business model, I expect a bunch of players to cash out and for RL to bottom out. Magic is being run like a shitty mobile game as of late, and soon, just like a shitty mobile game, Magic will be a dead property played solely by a handful of whales.

Aside from Candelabra, I have bought between 1 and 6 of every card on this list over the past week. Though I have been picky on auctions and gotten them lower than the prices listed here. In some cases, up to 20% below. We have to keep in mind that part of this drop is not even related to WOTC at all. The world is in an absolute shit show state right now. Credit Cards spending has gone through the roof as people run out of money for basic things. A pile of selling is likely due to people just trying to raise money to live. That puts even more pressure than just not having excess cash alone. Like a perfect storm of hell for all asset classes including cash.

I'm glued to F2F's website. Since Dominaria United came out, they've been discounting reserve list cards. They're currently having their 3rd straight sale. Wouldn't surprise me if the sales keep going up until Christmas

Card market values follows the stock market usually by a lag of 1 year. US market is 30% down with another 20% downside due to federal reserve rate hikes. This is the future of the Reserved list especially with Beta reprint proxies.
Wow Moxman! I went and took a look at some cards I want but have had to wait on due to funds, and sure enough, they are like 50% less than they were a month or two ago.
2021 price increases were definitely breakneck crazy. Stock and home prices did the same thing. Stock and home prices have also been crashing in the last few months. I would definitely caution against buying any cards that are not commander legal, if your intention is investing. Commander is definitely in the driver's seat when it comes to prices.
Haven't really got into buying any Reserved list cards yet but I'd love to get my hands on copy Artifact, Recurring Nightmare, Volrath's Stronghold & Fork but if things keep going down I'll probably wait awhile.
I bought a lot of singles in 2020/2021, stopped buying at the beginning of the year, now Im thinking I will go through my collection, and fill some of the RL holes. I imagine prices will sink lower as soon as that floppy pile of 30th hits the secondary market

Man i need that candelabra for my Phage Storm cEDH as easy infinite mana in mono black and costs way less than a Umbral mantle to even activate but you still need mana doubler's such as Crypt Ghast, Magus, and or the Coffers as a example. Before you ask i wanna keep the deck Tournament Legal as in no proxying though there are not really expensive cards for mono black storm the most expensive one probably being Painter's Servant to combo with a Jet Medallion naming black so your artifacts cost 1 less meaning Sol Ring is a free card and with a K'rrik out all of your mana rocks are free to cast because you can pay life for the pips and they already cost 1 less and let's not forget there are good synergy cards for painter's servant such as Thull Wizard which counters Black spells meaning all spells with it out and if they pay the black or 3 you can activate it again as the spell is still on the stack meaning you pretty much hard lock them out of doing anything if you can consistently gen infinite mana because of the candelabra. The phage deck has a infinite combo it likes to win with on its own which is Witchbane Orb, Pithing Needle, Lethal Vapors, Whispering Madness and Phage along with one of the many ways to get her out without dying and there are ways to get rid of your own Artifacts so you can Torpor Orb then sac it or play a command Beacon as they can't interact with a land unless they stifle its activation. But there are other ways to win such as attacking with Phage for game or one of the many infinite combos with K'rrik that accidently happens due to it being a mono black storm deck by nature so in the case of someone mind slavering me to exile phage i have a backup win con and a way to get her back from exile which also involves a infinite combo which allows me to storm out my entire deck onto the field FROM EXILE pretty much
That Recurring Nightmare seems pretty nice, atm still expensive in NM on european market (50$), maybe it drops more ;) ...Fork is also expensive (60$+) bought it much cheaper months ago
Promissory estoppel is not why they haven't reprinted reserve list cards yet. The reason they haven't is that they want to milk as much money as possible showing quarter over quarter growth for as long as possible. People are realizing this
I used to have one copy of each staple card in each of my decks.... Now I will just keep one copy in a small binder and proxy the rest.... I'll just keep some blinged decks with old foils but won't keep anything else from now on.
Boomstick! - I cant believe Candelabra is still dropping - that card is so strong; with any two+ mana lands in play its infinite mana ( workshop, sanctum, cradle, tron, coffers, escavations, trading post, shrine of nyx...the list goes on ). With Borthers war around the corner I'd be very surprised in candelabra and metalworker don't go up in price.
I don't know I think we have entered a new era of magic. The new era of Magic is Proxies Magic. I am seeing way to many folks selling there cards and printing there decks in commander. It spreading like a plague here where I am. It going to get to the point where I bet wotc will say at wpn stores your going to have to play in your commander pods/ leagues with official wotc cards. Yeah these are some good prices. Most of the top of the 2020- early 2022 has now just been rushed to drop because of Magic 30. This scared investors of the RL. This is a fantastic opportunity. Just gotta remember pay the bills first and be smart. Boomstick

I think the 30th anniversary edition is a blessing for players. It’s intimidating investors who hold on to magic cards just for financial purposes to sell allowing affordable prices and to put those precious cards on a kitchen table.
Prices are not super low. I bought nm Thrull Champions in Feb 21 for €2, now they are €7. And I have mich more examples. Prices have not crashed thát much
It’s really cool to see rare cards become more affordable but if I was a Collector I’d be furious with WotC. This 30th anniversary move has been one of the worst decisions they’ve made because I just can’t see what they were trying to achieve. People won’t care about the 30th Proxies because that’s what they are…proxies. Fake cards. So WotC has totally devalued their reserve list and they’re not earning any of this money desperately spent on the marketplace.
It wasn't just FOMO, a huge bubble in collectibles as due to crypto and the need to conduct money laundering via physical items that have no real value (tax purposes) but high subjective value and liquidity (reserve list). IMO a good portion of this sell off correlates to the crypto market.
Step 1: Sell a reprint set with pricing guidance based on something printed 30 years ago. Step 2: lower the value of the set used for that pricing guidance simply by announcing the product's existence. Step 3: Be stuck selling that set at a cost higher than what would be a current pricing evaluation and can't possibly be worth that price once opened.
2021 was a silly time to buy into RL cards. Buying cards, or any asset, at times when prices are high is a bad move. Not feeling sorry for those who bought in at that time. Saying that these cards are crushed is a tad over the top. Come talk to me when they get to pre 2016 pricing. The only reason that cards attained the price points they did in 2021 was speculation by people who hadn’t been tracking these cards over the long haul. Buying unplayable cards that had no value simply because they are RL is not a smart move. Question, how is the market for ABUR cards on the RL? Since none of the cards in this vid are in 30A, it’s not truly reflective of 30A’s impact on the market.
Makes me wonder how much 93-94 keeps 4 horsemen prices inflated? (Even non RL ogs like Triskelion, Underworld Dreams, Sylvan Library, Land Tax, Shatterstorm, etc seem to command a higher price than you would expect).
I really hate people who cry about the "reserve" list. Has no body noticed that a large majority of original printings of cards on that list will never drop in value if they were to be reprinted.

New to the channel, but I cringe when people use MTG Stocks and point to those blips on the charts as a "real" price. I guarantee not a single Greven was actually sold at $25, in fact, I'd be surprised if one ever sold for more than $17. Have you talked about the MTG stocks algorithm before and analyzed how it works? I've always looked at MTG Stocks as 100% manipulatable data, so it's hard to take any credence from discussions that mention a card was "X $" at some point in time when that point in time never existed outside some market manipulation nonsense that had occurred.
I think I agree with this, I've bought a considerable amount of single RL cards at as low as 30% of their stated value, yet the prices never went down (and in the case if a few of them, actually went up 50-75+% a few weeks later? Seems off)
It’s all related to crypto the charts never lie they’re all going to drop a cliff as the crypto losses and recession will cause a bid drop in values but hold if you can the markets always go back although it might take some time

Fork was the first rare I opened in MTG from a revised pack and miraculously I still have it! That card has won me so many games in so many ways!

2 cards I check up on frequently is Lifeline and Recurring Nightmare. Seeing these cards on sale makes me quite happy.
I am still buying RL cards but I am loving that people are faltering makes it so much cheaper. Wizards messed things up huge

Promissory estoppel is not why they haven't reprinted reserve list cards yet.
The reason they haven't is that they want to milk as much money as possible showing quarter over quarter growth for as long as possible.

I used to have one copy of each staple card in each of my decks.... Now I will just keep one copy in a small binder and proxy the rest.... I'll just keep some blinged decks with old foils but won't keep anything else from now on.
Boomstick! - I cant believe Candelabra is still dropping - that card is so strong; with any two+ mana lands in play its infinite mana ( workshop, sanctum, cradle, tron, coffers, escavations, trading post, shrine of nyx...the list goes on ). With Borthers war around the corner I'd be very surprised in candelabra and metalworker don't go up in price.
I don't know I think we have entered a new era of magic. The new era of Magic is Proxies Magic. I am seeing way to many folks selling there cards and printing there decks in commander. It spreading like a plague here where I am. It going to get to the point where I bet wotc will say at wpn stores your going to have to play in your commander pods/ leagues with official wotc cards. It unbelievable bad. I will admit magic palyer are some of the most creative humans. Some amazing proxies.
Yeah these are some good prices. Most of the top of the 2020- early 2022 has now just been rushed to drop because of Magic 30. This scared investors of the RL. This is a fantastic opportunity. Just gotta remember pay the bills first and be smart. Boomstick

I think the 30th anniversary edition is a blessing for players. It’s intimidating investors who hold on to magic cards just for financial purposes to sell allowing affordable prices and to put those precious cards on a kitchen table.

Prices are not super low. I bought nm Thrull Champions in Feb 21 for €2, now they are €7. And I have mich more examples. Prices have not crashed thát much

It’s really cool to see rare cards become more affordable but if I was a Collector I’d be furious with WotC. This 30th anniversary move has been one of the worst decisions they’ve made because I just can’t see what they were trying to achieve. People won’t care about the 30th Proxies because that’s what they are…proxies. Fake cards. So WotC has totally devalued their reserve list and they’re not earning any of this money desperately spent on the marketplace.
Shattered dreams foils are an extremely wise pick up. They are getting put on the sensitivity card list for sure.
It wasn't just FOMO, a huge bubble in collectibles as due to crypto and the need to conduct money laundering via physical items that have no real value (tax purposes) but high subjective value and liquidity (reserve list). IMO a good portion of this sell off correlates to the crypto market.
Yeah i think the crash is due to people overreacting to current events. But these cards will spike up again.

Step 1: Sell a reprint set with pricing guidance based on something printed 30 years ago. Step 2: lower the value of the set used for that pricing guidance simply by announcing the product's existence. Step 3: Be stuck selling that set at a cost higher than what would be a current pricing evaluation and can't possibly be worth that price once opened.

2021 was a silly time to buy into RL cards. Buying cards, or any asset, at times when prices are high is a bad move.
Not feeling sorry for those who bought in at that time.
Saying that these cards are crushed is a tad over the top. Come talk to me when they get to pre 2016 pricing. The only reason that cards attained the price points they did in 2021 was speculation by people who hadn’t been tracking these cards over the long haul.
Buying unplayable cards that had no value simply because they are RL is not a smart move.
Question, how is the market for ABUR cards on the RL? Since none of the cards in this vid are in 30A, it’s not truly reflective of 30A’s impact on the market.
Makes me wonder how much 93-94 keeps 4 horsemen prices inflated? (Even non RL ogs like Triskelion, Underworld Dreams, Sylvan Library, Land Tax, Shatterstorm, etc seem to command a higher price than you would expect).
I think that these cards would have eventually attained value, but for sure believe that 93/94 exacerbated the issue.

I really hate people who cry about the "reserve" list. Has no body noticed that a large majority of original printings of cards on that list will never drop in value if they were to be reprinted.

I... am kinda shocked your analysis of Commander Greven is "I'd buy in for a playset at $20 especially when it used to be $100." And by somehow stretching to justify it on its playability in commander. Like. Even 8 seconds of research on EDH rec has it in 20 decks ranked... uh... over 2000th in their data.
I'm just sort shocked your interpretation is somehow "this card is actually worth $25 because it's playable in Commander" and not "2021 speculated on this card and it was priced irrationally high and the market is correcting; we're literally seeing that $25 price wasn't sustained by the market."
Tbh stuff like that makes me immediately wary of any other analysis you make.
This guy trying to influence the market by comparing peak 2021 prices to today's prices is not what any financial adviser would do. It was an outlier and should not be use as a basis that prices should be that high. Hopefully no one will take his advice and go buy a bunch of cards now thinking they are a bargain, then found out they got burn later when prices start to revert to the norm. If you want true financial advise, please seek out a real financial advisor.

New to the channel, but I cringe when people use MTG Stocks and point to those blips on the charts as a "real" price. I guarantee not a single Greven was actually sold at $25, in fact, I'd be surprised if one ever sold for more than $17. Have you talked about the MTG stocks algorithm before and analyzed how it works? I've always looked at MTG Stocks as 100% manipulatable data, so it's hard to take any credence from discussions that mention a card was "X $" at some point in time when that point in time never existed outside some market manipulation nonsense that had occurred.
Having said that, I will make the note that if a $25 Greven did sell, it was probably a BGS 10, so not a real price point either.
I think I agree with this, I've bought a considerable amount of single RL cards at as low as 30% of their stated value, yet the prices never went down (and in the case if a few of them, actually went up 50-75+% a few weeks later? Seems off)
It’s all related to crypto the charts never lie they’re all going to drop a cliff as the crypto losses and recession will cause a bid drop in values but hold if you can the markets always go back although it might take some time
