  • In this video the 67 thunderbird crew cab returns for its first street drive in over 30 years . it has a 390 fe big block ford . In preveous videos we pulled it out of the junkyard, got it running, cleaned it up, and did donuts around the field and jumped it.
thank you to carburetorsandmore.com for rebuilding it for us

Uh...no. A 428 FE series engine was available in 1967 the "Q" code. The new "385 series" 429, completely unrelated to the FE series 390/428 became available in the 1968 model year. The FE 428 had a bore of 4.13 inches and a stroke of 3.98 inches, it was produced for low-end torque, yet the 385 series "Thunder Jet" 429 with a bore of 4.36 inches (bigger than a Cadillac 500 bore...4.304x4.304) and a stroke of 3.59 inches would often spank the 428.
A rare Thunderbird option in 1965 was the 427 FE (4.25x3.74), a detuned variant of the engine that kicked Enzos ass at Le Mans.
Aside from that, I've rarely seen a 390 able to smoke tires unless it was one of the rare high performance versions such as the 61-62 solid lifter 390s .
For about 18 months in late 62-63 a .080 overbored 390 was available, it was the 406 which Ford built to compete with the Chevrolet 409.

I think this is a great family car you should actually keep and progressively restore as part of the channel. A new dual exhaust will make a big difference too. I know it needs a lot of work but it is worth saving and I am sure there will be people out there that will have floorpans etc to donate etc. It is such a cool car and they didn’t make that many 4 doors.

I started out with a 67 four door t bird when I was 18 years old. Then I had a 74 then a 75 T bird's. After I retired in 2015 started hunting me a 67 two door and found it in Jackson Ga. My brother in law lived close to Atlanta then so I drove the 67 up to his house about 30 miles, it was not a daily driver, somehow made it then trailered it to home right west of Birmingham Al. Done a lot to her but still a ways to go. She's drive able not, but need to swap out fuel sending unit before putting in more gas. Interior is immaculate black vinyl , carpet needs a good cleaning , paint is beige but its peeling in large areas don't know what i can do about that. Heater core needs replaced, steering wheel doesn't swing away, air needs charging and thats about it, keep your 67 T bird, the wife enjoyed driving it!

782nd! The one I owned in 1973 was beautiful and drove like a dream. But I couldn’t get enough gas to drive it much or far. It got 11 mpg. I think it had a 25 gallon tank, if I wasn’t mistaken. The gas stations would only sell you a curtain amount of gas per vehicle. I was lucky, my best friends parents owned a convenience store with a gas pump. His dad bought all the gas he could and kept it for the family to use. So I sold my Thunderbird for loss, I bought it for $800 I think, and sold it for $600 or less. I bought a MG Midget to drive around town for little while. Roger in Pierre South Dakota

I have owned several early 70's Thunderbirds, and many full size Ford's from the late 60's thru the seventies, while some mechanical parts MAY be unique to the Thunderbird, experience reminds me full size Ford cars (Custom, Custom 500, Galaxie 500, LTD) share many, many parts with the Thunderbird for these years. The T-birds built form 67-71 were all very similar. All had various engines, 390/428 for 67, and early 68. The 429 took over after December 67. And all these engines were also shared with the full size Ford's. All Thunderbird engines for these years had 4 venturi carbs. These are great cars when you figure out their quirks, and offer stellar good looks at a budget price.

Hi Josh, well it is 2am in the UK and I have just binged watched all the videos for the 67 Thunderbird. I loved them, in all of them I kept thinking that the dash board looked familiar, but I just couldn't place it. Then in the last video I think it was you said that it looked so futuristic. That's when it hit me like a 10lb sledge hammer on a break drum, the dash looks just like the tricorder on Star Trek The Original Series. The one Mr Spock uses, check it out you will see it. 👍👍👍👍👍

Those FE motors produced tons of torque. 332, 352, 390, 406, 427, & 428. Owned a 68 Shelby GT500 with a 428 SCJ. Man, that thing wiped the streets with almost everything she came up against!! It's said Ford rated them at 335 HP for insurance reasons, but actual numbers are close to 400HP.

The engines you left out...the 1966-1967 Mercury only 410. ( a MEL series 410 ci engine was made in the late 50s---completely unrelated) The newer 410 engine used a 390 block (4.05 inch bore) with the 3.98 inch stroke 428 crank.
A 361 ci FE type engine was also made and installed in 1958 Edsels along with the previously mentioned MEL 410
Information I find is that it was Edsel only.
I was snooping around the local U Pull and Pay and found a beat-to-hell 68 Ford 1 ton flatbed. The dim bulbs had scratched the grease off the left front of the block (the numbers 352 were cast into most all FE engines of the period) They left it alone.
They failed to find the original aluminum Ford identification tag under the coil bracket, and it turned out to be a 410. I double checked with an old marked dipstick placed down a spark plug hole with the piston at BDC--theres a quarter inch difference between a 390 and 410/428
An hour later--I was back with necessary tools to snag it.

Yeah! After watching your wife drive it and getting a better look at the interior. That car is definitely worth the time, money and effort to restore. That one would be my family cruiser on hotrod night at the local rod hangout. I really think you should give that grand old lady a good home Sleeperdude. She’s worth it! That’s a classy old girl.

I just bought a 67 Thunderbird w/390 FE last year. All original, under 50,000 miles. Interior is impeccable. Some rusting around the wheels and other places but body is structurally sound. Still has that original Tahoe turquoise paint job from back in the day that looks pretty decent for its age. Got her for a real steal considering she ran and how she looked, but needed work under the hood and other places since it's been a while. My carburetor was not good either instead of rebuilding I went with the Holley 750 vacuum secondary electric choke and she's quite a difference has a bit more power now to say the least. The new battery and other stuff in there and she starts right up in pers and just cruises nicely down the road.

That Aussie gift was choc-coated Hokey-Pokey, a common treat 'down under' (Cadbury market it as 'Crunchie.). Enjoy!
Hoky-pokey is Golden Syrup and extra sugar (white, preferably Castor) foamed by Baking Soda (Sodium bicarbonate).
Golden Syrup is extracted from truly-raw sugar after treacle in the refinement process.
With Maple syrup equally sweet I'm surprised not to have heard of a Canadian equivalent. 😀

When the shop i worked at had a oil change contract with Valvaline they sent a oil drain repair kit and it had a repair that had a cutting adapter that treaded a stripped oil bolt , that would stay in the pan and it had a new drain plug that would screw into that . Those worked very well . You might stop a one of those quick lube places and ask about those , much easier than the heliacoil stuff .I just never new the correct name of that repair fitting .
