    Thank you so much, just the right "know-how" video for me. I hope it will be as easy to install an extra slave socket as it seems when you're doing it))) Anyway, I feel more confident about this little project now. You have covered all my questions, by the way, because I was wondering whether it's possible to run another extension from the existing one. Wishing you all the best.

    Hi vince,
    Just replaced the master tel socket which was very old to a new ADSL FACEPLATE AND BACKPLATEl socket and wired up 2 extensions.Internet speed has gone from 1.67mb before to 4.67mb after carrying out the work. i could not believe thisand have done a few speed tests all day. The old socket was a mess of old redundant wires still connected. Great videos and easy to follow advise. Thanks Vince.

    Hi Vince, nice video and thank you so much. I do have a question re. extension of a broadband cable. I checked mine, it uses a two pair cable and all 4 leds are connected from the main-socket (outside the house) to the socket inside the house. In my case can I also just use the blue-white-orange like you showed in the video, or do I need to connect all 4 (blue-white-orange-white)? The reason for this is that I'd like to use one old telephone cable (only has 3 leds), which is already installed in the house. Thank you again for your answer. Best regards!

    Hi, When you say not to run it from the box into the house, does that mean the actual box that is installed by SKY with two sockets? I just want a box in my room so I can use a wired vintage style telephone but I am worried about touching anything on the SKY socket in case I break something. My Dad put extension boxes in our rooms as kids, many years ago and they always worked fine but that was pre-internet/broadband days so I dare not mess with any socket I should not! I'm pretty handy but just don't want to risk the broadband or a big bill from SKY for messing it up!

    0:43 the phone wiring in the house I live in is the same as this; two pairs, one orange and orange/white, and a blue and blue/white pair. Apparently the cable that was used here is meant to be temporary, but it was never supplanted with proper Cat 3 wiring.

    Hi Vince, Great videos and really helpful. Could you please suggest the safest way to remove phone wires from the back of the faceplate when there is very little slack to play with. Thanks.

    • @Mymatevince
      @Mymatevince  8 років тому

      +mick f Hi, if you have a krone type punchdown tool (the professional type that snips the wire when punching down) then it has a little hook that you can pop out and this hook is really good at pulling out the wires. If not you can just yank them out and if you can't get any slack to re terminate them then get some 2 wire jelly crimps and a bit of old telephone wire and extend each wire out (preferably using the same colour code (blue to blue etc.) The jelly crimps won't be seen as they will be hidden in the backbox.Many thanks Vince.

    I have a phone line extension system fed from an "stc mx5" telephone system, a floor polisher caused the master socket (fed from one of the five MX5 output extensions) to come off the wall. the question is what type of master socket would be compatible as replacement to this? - I think its a pbx system seeing that you could use this as an intercom and have to dial 9 before dialling out externally.

    Hi great video. Can I use a junction box? I have master socket close to front door and want to do two extra sockets.. one in living room and another one upstairs bedroom. I am guessing that will be 3 wires in one point each 2,3,5 . Will be my connection weak? Cheers

    • @Mymatevince
      @Mymatevince  8 років тому

      +Mariusz Łysik Hi, if you are using one of these NTE5 master socket then you will be fine because the main wires connect on the backplate and then you connect up the 2 extension cables onto the removable frontplate and the IDC terminals allow 2 wires in each slot so you will be fine. If you have the very old smaller master socket (2/1a) then you will not be able to connect up 2 extensions because it will be 3 cables in total and again the IDC slots only allow 2 wires.
      Thanks Vince

      +Eddie Sharples I wonder if your line is on the limit and when you install the extra extension it is enough to knock the broadband out. Try disconnecting the ringer wire on terminal 3 so only connect wires 2 and 5 to see if that helps.Thanks Vince

    Hello! I have a NTE5 master socket and an extension. But whatever way the extension was installed, it does not terminate into the socket, instead a normal phone plug was put onto the wire and plugged into the socket in the master socket. Could I just cut the phone plug off the extension cable and wire it to the master socket like in your video or do I have to re run the whole wire again? Thanks and keep up the great videos

    • @Mymatevince
      @Mymatevince  9 років тому

      Andrew Hume Hi, if it is solid core wires then you will be able to hardwire it in but you will see no benefit (apart from neatness) to hardwire it in. If it is very flexible then it may be stranded wires in which case they do not punch in well to the terminations so I would leave it as it is with the BT plug on it.Thanks Vince

      K Crawford Hi, it is best to use a 2/3a extension socket BUT........another BT master socket will work as an extension but it will cause confusion in the future if an engineer is ever working inside your property because you will have 2 master sockets on the one line but you will be able to plug a phone in and get dial tone just fine.Thanks Vince

  • @56pickuptruck
    @56pickuptruck 6 років тому +1

    Here's a simple challenge for you Vince. Don't expect you to have an answer but don't think you encountered an old-style problem like this. I connected, from an old-style main socket (having 2 main wires, orange & white) which was downstairs, an extension to another room downstairs. Then from that extension downstairs, connected an extension upstairs. I have nothing plugged into the main socket, but have 2 vintage bakelite dial telephones plugged into the 2 extensions upstairs & downstairs. Both telephones & lines work fine, except the upstairs telephone doesn't ring.
    Nothing wrong with any of my telephones but if I swap them around, upstairs telephone with the downstairs telephone, guess what? The telephone which is now downstairs works good. But the telephone which is now upstairs, doesn't even have a dial tone.
    Any ideas gratefully received.

    • @Mymatevince
      @Mymatevince  6 років тому

      That is a strange one as you would expect both phones to have the same non ringing fault when upstairs. Personally I would double the check the wiring for the upstairs extension in both the up and downstairs sockets (the terminals 2,3 and 5). You could try fitting an ADSL micro filter into the upstairs socket as normally these will allow the phone to ring. If it does you could change the upstairs socket over to a 2/2a or 2/1a if you didn't want the filter sticking out of the socket as these have the capacitor in them which will allow the phone to ring. Hopefully it will be a wiring problem but if not then the ADSL filter or 2/2a will hopefully remedy the situation :-)

      your master socket is acting as the ringer but you need the third wire 3 to fire your ringer on 2nd phone because that is your extension.

      Have you plugged a filter into both sockets (if you have equipment plugged into both sockets) and did you use copper cable like CW1308 or was it the cheaper copper/aluminium mix cable?

      @chrismorgan7727 8 років тому

      +My Mate VINCE thanks so much for getting back to me. I have bought the copper wire you suggested and have a filter in the master socket with working broadband. When I remove the faceplate and wire in the new extension, the master socket stops working. I have tried this several times making sure everything is wired up perfectly but still no luck. Thanks so much for helping me out, many thanks

    • @Mymatevince
      @Mymatevince  8 років тому

      Hi Chris, if the master socket is actually dead (no dial tone) then it is easier to fault find. Firstly disconnect the extension socket and test again at the master socket with the frontplate attached and the extension cable attached so this will eliminate the extension socket. If it is still dead then it must be the cable or the frontplate so disconnect the cable and then test with the frontplate plugged in and if it is working then the cable must be faulty. You could always try the orange wire to terminal 2 on both ends and the white/orange wire to terminal 5 just to see if they work, and then you know 100% that the blue pair is faulty.

    • @Mymatevince
      @Mymatevince  9 років тому

      +Michael Holmes Hi, yes you can split the telephone line, remember that the little IDC terminals will only accept 2 wires so you may have to put in a BT78 junction box which has more IDC terminals if you run out of space. Telephone extensions can be daisy chained from one socket to the socket or star wired (split) from one location.Thanks Vince

    Hi there, thanks for the informative video.. I have a question regarding the blue pair. My current extension is wired in and functioning but with the blue to 5 and white/blue to 2.. Is this correct or should it definitely be wired as you stated? I imagine the pair make up a circuit of some sort so it may not matter. Grateful for your feedback

    • @Mymatevince
      @Mymatevince  9 років тому

      darkchildjon Hi, if the other end of the cable is also wired up blue to 5 and white/blue to 2 then it will not make any difference. The wire doesn't care which colour it is but it may/can cause confusion to an engineer if they had to work on your extension wiring. You may as well leave it as it is if it is all working well and if you come to do any new work then you can follow the standard colour code as shown in the video.Many thanks Vince

    Hi. I have a daft question. When you put the cables into the terminals using the push down tool, to my eye the cables that are now in the terminals still have their plastic on them covering up the copper inside. How is the connection made between the cables and the terminals if the plastic coating is still present? I would have thought the plastic sheath would have had to be removed prior to installing the cables?

    • @Mymatevince
      @Mymatevince  9 років тому

      +jmcphee7 Hi, the metal in the actual terminal (IDC Slots) cuts the plastic on both sides to touch the copper on the inside so you don't have to strip them back to bare copper.Thanks.

    • @Mymatevince
      @Mymatevince  8 років тому

      +Scott Owers Hi, if you use the plug in dangly micro filters then yes it will work but the speed may drop slightly depending on the cable used. BUT if you have a VDSL faceplate on the master socket then you cannot move your router unless you look into a dedicated data extension which is more complicated.
      Thanks Vince

      Thanks Vince, I do have the filters so this would work. Thinking of routing the cable outside as the better half may not appreciate cable all through the house, do you recommend/sell a cable for this? And would the distance of cable have a bearing on the speed? Thanks

    • @Mymatevince
      @Mymatevince  8 років тому

    Hi Vince, I've bought an extension kit from you and followed your instructions carefully to install the extension socket using some CW1308 cable and for 2-3 months it's worked without any issues. I even noticed some incredible download speed! However over the past few weeks, we've noticed intermittent connection drop outs (several times a day). I've then plugged my micro filter directly into my test socket and no issues. I've also tested it for several days in the face place on the master socket and it's been fairly stable (a few drop outs though). The extension cable is attached to the face plate so it seems to indicate an issue with the extension or face plate perhaps. I've also tried to disconnect the ringer wire from the face plate as I've read that it can cause some interference(?). Before I start ripping off the extension cable that I hid between the floor and wall and under the skirting board, would you have any suggestions as to what could be the problem or how I can test the extension cable further? Much appreciated and please continue your great videos! Cheers.

      Hi, you could try moving it onto the orange wires just to test the cable. So disconnect the blue wires and use orange to terminal 2 on both ends of the cable and white/orange to terminal 5 on both ends. Leave it on this orange pair for a couple of weeks to see if it improves. If it does then it means the blue pair of wires is going faulty and the cable may be faulty/damaged.
      Thanks Vince

      Thank you for the quick reply and for the suggestion Vince. I'll swap the cables tonight and leave it for a couple of weeks as suggested. The drop outs are happening more often as time goes on and unplugging the cat 5e cable from the extension seems to "reset" it for a while...

      Hi Vince, my phone/router has now been plugged in to the master socket for a few weeks and it's been fairly stable so it seems that the extension cable is faulty and will need to come out. I'm now considering replacing the 2-pair extension cable with some CAT 5e cable and also replacing the i-Plate at the master socket with a VDSL mk3 faceplate. I could then run my telephone extension over 3 cables on terminals 2, 3 and 5 and also my data/broadband extension on another 2 cables from terminals A and B. I would also need to replace my extension socket at the other end with an RJ11 and a telephone module. Does this make sense and would you recommend this setup? Best Regards, Gael.

    Do you have a video showing how to install an extension with ADSL/PHONE socket. If not can you do one and will I need to run a cat5e cable from the main socket for this?

    • @Mymatevince
      @Mymatevince  9 років тому

      +Tania Hart Hi, no I don't at the moment but it is the same as running a normal extension socket, it is just the socket itself which is different as it has a filter built into it to save you plugging one in but normally you would still use terminals 2,3 and 5 the same as in this video.Thanks Vince

      +kevz kev It can work but sometimes (depending on the thickness of the screwdriver) it can spread open the metal IDC terminal so it can make a loose connection especially if you do not do it dead straight when pushing down.

    Hi Vince, i have a slight problem. I followed your video and downstairs with the mastwr socket their is a filter with broadband and phone. I extended the bt line to go upstairs. But when i put the phone line in upstairs, the downstairs phone stops working? Have i wited incorrectly?

    • @Mymatevince

      Hakan Jabbar Hi, double check your new phone in the existing master socket in case it is faulty. Then check you have wired it correctly, blue to 2, orange to 3 and white/blue to 5 on both ends of the cable. If you are using the small plug in micro filters then make sure you plug one into the new telephone extension. If you still have not luck then double check the cable for damage.Thanks Vince.

      gt fo Hi there, as far as I know it was only the UK which adopted the ringer wire and it was something to do with the old hardwired phones which had big 'real' bells which used to tinkle when using pulse dialling (before tone dialling) on another phone in the property. By connecting a ringer wire it stopped this from happening. Also I wonder if cost and the size of the old capacitor came into it because by using the bell wire it uses the capacitor in the master phone so additional phones could be smaller and perhaps cheaper. Most people disconnect the bell wire now anyway so the 2 wire system has turned out to be the best version. Many thanks Vince

      In the US, the 3rd wire is not needed. Dial tone and ring work on a single pair. Hope this helps anyone watching stateside.

      Hi, if the phone works in the wall socket and then you plug the 10m extension into the wall socket and the phone stops working on the end of the 10m extension then the 10m extension must be faulty.

    Why can you never find an answer to your own specific problem?
    I want to run an extension from an extension, it will save a lot of cable and drilling holes right through the wall of the house. I have loads of drop cable, solid colour green white orange and black, and want to run it around the outside of the house to a shed.
    This is where none of the online videos seem able to help me. The nearest extension to my shed is an extension off the master socket to the back bedroom, it too runs outside outside the house.
    The problem is the colour coding, it is all white with bands, colours with bands orange, blue green, every colour of the rainbow!!
    How on earth do I know which of my drop cable colours (solid B G W O) go to which terminals in the extension box wired up with all those banded wires???
