I had this on my 90 along with the X Engineering pedal lock. It bolts to the floor so you can’t be without it and flips up in seconds and job done. It there is no steering wheel and no pedal access then most run of the mill scrotes will pass it by, but if they really want it they will have it away on a trailer or recovery wagon. You just need to make yours a bit harder to steal than the average one. Security layers is the way to go.
Nice! A secret switch somewhere under the dash between the wire feeding the starter solenoid is also a good thing. I've also seen someone run the fuel pump wire through six switches in a row on the dash. And only he knew which had to be flipped up or down to start the vehicle. When he parked it, he just flipped them all down.
Great tip 👍 I can remember when I was a postman back in the 1980s one of my customers had his Jaguar xjs doors, boot lid and bonnet pinched during the night.
A little tip for you Doc, counter sink the pin holes in the back of the spinning boss, it help to locate it without to much fuss, I used a 12mm bit and only went in about 4mm max,
Put the ecu on velcro and whip if out when parking up, that's what I do, td5. Motorbike chain locks through the wheels around the radius Arms. Flap valve on the exhaust tailpipe, 4inches from the end
Didn’t know they made such a thing, for us slightly larger diameter framed, removing the steering wheel will make it easier to get in and out the Landy. I had a smaller steering wheel made for my old series one. Good video keep it up.
round here they just angle grind the door hinges and take the doors ,, seems to be the most valuable part of one these days , certainly the easiest to sell on quickly .
The boss lock cover can, with a bit of know how, be picked. So don't leave the wheel in the car thinking it's safe as you have a boss lock on. Always take the wheel out of the vehicle when you park up.
I think Optimill have a complex lock built in to the swivel lock that is anti-pick? But I agree probably best not to have the steering wheel loose next to it (mainly because I don’t want my wheel stealing either!)
If I’m at home, I keep the steering wheel in the house, if I’m out I have a motorbike security chain and good padlock and chain it to the rear seat brackets, it’s all about layers of security.
@@thedoctorsgarage check out lock picking lawyer. Those types of cores vary but certainly aren’t unpickable. No lock is. The tools to open them are available on eBay around thirty quid. Do some other mods. And DONT make a video!!
Agree, defo don't leave the wheel in the car. Those cylinder locks are the reason most bike D-locks are a waste of time. You don't even need to pick them ! A simple everyday item will open most of them as I discovered when someone tried to take my MTB.
I like this so much more than a Bearlock. Crooks have to break into the vehicle = inflicting damage, before they discover the car has a Bearlock. This one has the bright orange mushroom directly and immediately visible through the windows. Which makes the thieves walk on to the next vehicle. At least, that's what I'm hoping for... 😁
My mates 110 had after market door locks, steering wheel clamp, peddle box lock, alarmed, immobilised, tracker and parked behind gates. He got cctv of a hiab lifting onto the Lorry and driving away. He phoned the police but by the time they found it, it was in a locked compound that they weren't interested in getting into. Never got it back and insurance paid out. If they want it they'll take it.
Also put x lock fold to floor peddle lock and deadlock on the doors, more you can do to slow thiefs down, more likely they are going to take someone else's less secure car
So if my wife asks me when at the shops “why is that person carrying a steering wheel?” My response should be “ just a defender owner worried about having to walk home!”
@@highdownmartin yes. I own a 109, 88 and two ser 1 swb. Because I’m old now I drive a D1 and D2 so the little things like leg room, air conditioning , power steering and comfortable seats are now luxuries I need and I haven’t had to push start or walk home yet! Lucky me! Mind you the good old series trucks never left me stranded either owing to my extensive selection of tools and the fact you could ( when I was younger ) push start and jump in and clutch start and get home. Back when they were on the road I never considered removing the steering wheel as a deterrent for being stolen, might be a different scenario now. Cheers.
@@thedoctorsgarage the idea has been when i was a kid, whether it was in a 50's ford falcon or in the 40, 60, 70 or 80 series land cruisers whether it was a button on the floor or key turn on the floor to something connected light dip switch on start up whether the vehicle be new from dealer to 20+ years old and in good nick you would want to protect your investment though personally if I was wanting to make any landrover defender or other landrover more reliable as it ages i would look at dumping rover parts and adapting toota engines and running gear as the preferred option if you are planning to keep it serviced and on the road..
That’s awesome Doc, That’s exactly what I want but I’m going for a wooden wheel… One question, did you have to give Optimil your reg number for the correct boss or did you take your old wheel off first to check prior to ordering, I know there are several spline configurations? Don’t forget the Jetlock, it’s fitted permanently in the car so no faffing around removing it or storing it, also don’t forget a kill switch :)) Regards Tony
Thanks Tony- I believe if the car is newer than mine (2007 onwards) they were 48spline but mine and before could be a 30 something or a 48. I took my centre cap off and counted the little splines to find out.
I know people that would be tempted to take the wheel off whilst doing 120Kph as a dare. Not sure this is a good idea at all. It comes off a little too easy

That’s a good way to avoid a dwi lol

😂 not good
What a brilliant idea. So simple and almost foolproof!
great bit of kit
i love listening to him explaining things 🥰
👌🏻
Question. Can you install this quick release and security device but keep the original defender steering wheel?
I’m not sure but as long as you can have the optimill boss fitted I guess you could have any wheel you wanted
got the same set up and steering wheel. hard to beat for looks and practility
👌🏻👌🏻 agree
Don’t forget they also do a keeper for the lock so you don’t have it rolling around in the vehicle. It also looks neater too.
I’ve seen that- I keep it in my cubby at the moment but it does roll
About a lot
Is the Prototipo the 350mm or the 370mm..?
350 I think 👌🏻
A little tip for you Doc, counter sink the pin holes in the back of the spinning boss, it help to locate it without to much fuss, I used a 12mm bit and only went in about 4mm max,
That’s a great tip Danny boy, there is always that one time every week when you can’t locate the lugs. Thanks, 👍

Taking the ECU out will certainly stop anyone getting it!!

would blocking the exhaust whilst running damage the engine? I'm thinking about it's use as a remote immobiliser if they did start it..

Would love something like this for my L200 but the steering has airbag.. do you know if they do 1 for steering wheels with airbags any links?
Hi Leigh- I don’t think that’s available unfortunately due to the complex electrics etc
@@thedoctorsgarage such a shame would stop alot of thefts
100% the wheel looks better and love the lock idea.
Thansk Ross!
What about if you have a Land Rover defender with an airbag
Unfortunately this is only for the pre 2016 models
Presumably it would be difficult to accidentally remove the wheel when the car is in motion ? 👍🏻
Yes its rock solid when locked in- There are two heavy pins that clip the wheel to the boss
Yes. I has to be a conscious action to get it off, you aren’t doing it by accident.
Just purchased one! Thanks for sharing
Nice. I have the same MoMo wheel. Very happy with it. A smaller wheel makes the old bus easier to drive

Horn is always on the stick on the TD5 defender so doesn’t change anything 👌🏻
Have had same fitted

Nice Mod. Doc - Whats the model of the new steering wheel pls?
Fun fact the majority of defender thefts, mostly in cities they just drive up next to a defender lift it with a crane straight onto lorries

Hydraulic line lock is another way. Park up , press brake pedal, push hidden button.. brakes are now locked on..

Shhh, nobody tell him how quick tubular locks are to pick.
I understand the one Optimill use is not just a standard tubular lock - so does make it quite a bit harder to pick
This system is fine for airbagless steering wheels….
Yes - it works for all defenders pre-2016 👌🏻
I know people that would be tempted to take the wheel off whilst doing 120Kph as a dare. Not sure this is a good idea at all. It comes off a little too easy
It locks pretty well to be fair - i don’t worry about it unclipping. Also 120kph is almost out of my max speed!
If I needed to move it I would drop the drag link at the axel and steer the tyres by hand. Strap the A frame on and away I go.
Who would steal an old defender?? It’s something crooks would choose to joyride in, it seems a disproportionate amount of effort to prevent theft
So many are stolen as the parts of worth quite a bit
One of the most stolen cars in the UK
😭
Isn’t it sad though that we have to resort to these measures to stop the lowlife from stealing our landys 🙁🙁
