Great advice indeed. For me always putting the car away in a locked alarmed garage gives me peace of mind. Having said that I always keep my key in a faraday bag as well. As for a tracker, when I spec'd my new Jaguar XE, I didn't bother with the factory tracker, but instead bought 2 tracker units from ebay. These units take a mobile sim card so i signed up to 2 giffgaff numbers. £10 credit lasts approx 6 months. I fitted the tracker units in different locations on the car and my reasoning behind fitting 2 was to cover myself should 1 unit fail for some reason. There is a mobile phone app and you can track the car at all times as well as it giving a history of every journey and location. You can set up fences as well so if the car moves out of a predefined radius you get an alarm. As an extra twist I stuck labels on them numbering them 2 and 3, so if thieves found them they might assume that there was a number 1 somewhere which they hadn't found, so hopefully would give up!!!

My Aunt and Uncle lived in Mexico City and were extremely wealthy. They had an in-home movie theater in the 1950's. And lived in a gated courtyard as so many do in Mexico. Still, they were chauffeured around by their driver in an old beater vehicle. I, too, drive nothing but old beaters, . . which do have their own charms as well as jokes and laughs :-). I keep two of them so that when one needs work, the other is drivable - and very cheap to insure. Since I have street parking, this works for me.
Thanks for posting this, great tips too. First thing I did was disable the keyless entry. Still keep the keys in Faraday box too and have lockable gates. If they want the car enough they will still take it but the more difficult we can make it the better.
I have an RRS and I used to put my key where it couldn’t be scanned until a local policeman pointed out to me that if the crooks have an order for your car and they have gone to the trouble of finding it they will take it, and if they cannot scan the key from outside they will break into your home and find it or make you tell them where it is. Turning off keyless entry negates the need for anything else…… although, pressing a button does make you look like a pauper in car top trumps….. 🙂 I also had (£45 supplied) COBRA 8510 Thatcham CAT2 immobiliser’s fitted in the last two cars…… means I have to use a touch point before starting…… which is a chore, but at least my car is usually where I left it 🙂
On my Defender 90 I have a full steering lock, full pedal lock, hidden inertia switch, alarm, tracker, grilled rear windows, security bolts and catches throughout 👍🏻
I would like to see drivers seat backs being able to be tipped forward and automatically locking securely to the steering wheel. Even if a thief gets in the car there is no room for them to sit and the deterrent is clearly visible from outside the car. I submitted this idea whilst working on the production line of a major vehicle manufacture - too costly, too difficult, not necessary... Maybe an independent or a DIY'er can come up with a reasonable modification kit? Regards from a snowy Gothenburg, Sweden
God things have changed .in the 60s when ever I parked my new mini up for any length of time I used to pop the bonnet and take out the rotor arm .lol No chance of that these days .
@@johnny71c54 SAAB 900's had gearbox locks. It was only possible for ignition key (on the central gearbox console) to be removed if the reverse gear was locked in place.
@@johnny71c54 way way back in the dear old 60s with the mini I even saw some guys take off the steering wheel ( only had one main big nut holding it on ) I never went that far .lol
I've had the unfortunate experience of having 2 Discovery 4s stolen. Neither of them were ever recovered. The first was stolen when parked in a hospital car park. It had no additional security measures. A relay attack seems unlikely as the keys were with me a significant distance from the car. There was also evidence of a window being smashed. The second was parked on my driveway with keyless entry disabled, my keys in a Faraday cage and a steering lock installed (same one featured on this video). There was no evidence left on my driveway of broken glass or of the tyres being dragged. I've no idea how either of them were stolen but it's shown me that if someone wants something then they'll find a way of taking it. It's now 6 months since the last one was stolen and I've not yet replaced it. I really want another one as I love the D4 but it feels like a fools game to buy a third and the insurance costs are getting rediculous for me. It's very frustrating to honestly work very hard day in and day out to then have the fruits of your labour taken off you by a few self-entitled members of society.
I did a similar thing on a series 8 avenger years ago I wired the feed to the ignition amplifier through a changeover relay so you had to flash the headlights and push the brake pad wear test button.
Enjoyed this video. I'v got a steering lock and iv got my keyless entry disabled. The other thing might be worth considering is some decent dash cams. I'v used thinkware all my life and this time around I went for the u1000 2 channel. A key factor for me was cloud alerts. I have my camera connected go a ivolt battery pack and the battery pack is wired into the car. Giving me about 2 to 3 days of parking recording based on motion or hits on car. The battery pack charges when the car is running and can get full charge within 30 to 40 mins. When parked on the drive the u1000 connects to my home wifi network. When out and about I first tested a 3000mah mifi hotspot. This was pretty crap. So I switched this out for a 13500 mah android device. That's backed by a heavy duty large power bank that has fast charging and pass through charging meaning it will charge itself when the car is running and also charge the device at the same time. Basically the hotspot will run for more then a week in parked mode. Complete over kill but hey. I now get cloud alerts when the car is parked up somewhere and I can connect to the u1000 remotely and view the cameras :) it was a fun creative project for me.
I worked in a body shop and the amount of vehicles being stolen now by confrontation in your own home and even beating up the owners is getting rediculous, even when the keys have been handed over. The only answer to this is don't buy a desirable car/watch etc.
Great video and advice. Land Rovers/ Range Rovers however are generally stolen by a new key being coded by via the obd port. Ghost is a great bit of kit as prevents relay, key programming and key theft.
@@thedoctorsgarage It's a nightmare. I'm a stolen vehicle examiner & I'm flat out either recovering or examining rung ones. JLR vehicles make up a large amount of my work. Scarily kit to unlock & program keys are easily & cheaply available nowadays.
just another example of bad security engineering by the manufacturer. By now, after decades of car theft, the consumer should not have to mess around like this. I would go further and say that legislation should be introduced that makes the car manufacturer liable if all the security/entry features are enabled and a car is stolen.
Just pop your key in the microwave oven when you get home, perfect Faraday cage. I put mine in the centre of the turntable so impossible to miss when you come to cook something 👍🏻
Great video, thanks. Isn't it ludicrous that technology took us away from the "inconvenience" and "difficulty" of inserting and turning a key only to replace it with something like ghost, no key turning just button pressing 😂
Get a removable seat pad for the drivers seat, custom made containing within a piece of hardboard with 50 or more strategically placed barbed fishing hooks, the thief jumps into the drivers seat and immediately requires a trip to A&E…. More so when you hear the screams and attend the scene with a baseball bat…. Just a thought.
I didn't mess around here, protected my RRS from day one, pouches for the keys, those pouches go in a box in the house and my private driveway access has 4 telescopic bollards blocking the car in!
Great tips for the low level car thieves, the more determined will break into your house to search for the keys or threaten you to hand them over. We have spate of BMWs been targeted in the Manchester area and this is their method for stealing cars, make sure that your house security is also up to spec.
Defender TD5 I have no footpath ie terraced house so Skytag tracker £12.99 a month, Pedal lock, steering lock, Alarm imoblisor with central locking and if you go close to it when it's locked it makes a big buzzing noise. Dog guard and rear door guard in the 90 also the Red booster feels like the clutch is broken it is that easy to press they would think it is not worth stealing. Next jobs are bonnet security ie hinges
I've had a few cars stolen. My Cortina 2000E was stolen at night so I installed a hidden switch to turn off the electrical supply to the lights. Driving at night without lights on will soon get attention! Also, when I've had a car with an electric petrol pump I fitted a switch to that as well. Car will only go about twenty feet then stop. I also know of someone who had a bracket with a attachable cover made that could be padlocked over the end of the exhaust pipe. Engine will not start if exhaust is blocked. These would not have stopped my two Volvos that were stolen in the 80's. A lorry with a crane picked them up and were gone never to be seen again in a couple of minutes.
Spot on ..... I disabled the keyless entry on my velar and I keep they keys in a metal biscuit tin which works a treat blocking the signal from within the house. I also have the same steering lock and an aftermarket tracker . Another good one is to immobilise the OBD port too. Also some dash cams activate the camera if a car is banged or moved ..the footage then being sent to your mobile phone ..... this may help in any investigation or prosecution.
@@Cous1nJack Yes im aware of that ...I got the tin and kept the keys in it before i knew about being able to disable the keyless entry . Just keep using it now out of habit ...and I know where my keys are !
@@2sweet2handle28 Cant remember the exact process now ..its a combination of pressing a button on the key fob a few times exiting the car , locking it then unlock it .think i found it on the velar forum .
May I suggest that there is a point your missing, when your driving you car, if your keyless entry is in a faraday pouch you cant drive your car, so while your driving, your zapper is active all the time, a person surely only has to drive alongside you, to get the signal ?
credit cards and other bank cards can be gotten aswell with some machines like the ones they use for the cars so its good to put your cards in a faraday pouch when out and about or even at home .
I have a Disco 2, and my father used to work with and own Land Rovers in the army. He told me he used to put the transfer case into neutral when he parked for the night. If someone tried to move or steal it, he'd hear his car start up, lots of frantic revving, then it would stop again as the thief gives up in a panic
I have Ghost on my car. It’s the best system available. Amazing that insurance companies give no credit for having it (I asked at last renewal and they said they knew how good it is, but no) but do for Trackers, which tells me they’re probably getting a kick back from them - much more money to be made from an exorbitant subscription model.
The ghost immobiliser reminds me of the 4-digit security code which I always use in my 22 year old BMW E38. It makes sure that the car can't be started without entering it. I had the guys from the garage come to collect the car for service one day and I gave them the key at the door. I went inside the house, showed them where the car was parked and said goodbye to them. Five minutes later I was looking outside the window and noticed that the car was still there. I immediately remembered that the PIN was on so I went outside to them. They told me that they couldn't start the car. I apologised to them profusely for forgetting to disengage the code and I unlocked it. The strange thing is that the car was clearly prompting them for the CODE, but they seemed to have missed that on the display. Us men don't read instructions🤣🤣
You can turn the ‘keyless entry’ off on many newer Kia models as well. Slightly different method, lock the car using the key fob ‘lock’ button, then hold down both the ‘lock’ and ‘unlock’ buttons together and the mirror amber lights ‘flash’ 4 times. The keyless is now disabled, and you will have to now use the fob unlock button to open the car, which will also re-enable keyless.👍
They could pick up your key signal anywhere so unless you have a completely separate system like Ghost your car is vulnerable. The insurance hit will probably be a lot more than the £500 to install the Ghost system.
Good tips! Especially turning off the keyless entry. Also Worth knowing, as I understand it, newer models with the Pivi Pro (new defender for example) no longer have a tracker fitted, the actual operating system is the tracker (E-sim) which is virtually impossible to remove (unless you ripped the whole wiring loom ou,t then the car wouldn’t start anyway) as it’s part of the internal electrics of the car, there is no physical tracker that can be removed.
Faraday cage, yep, I use a tin can. Keep all my vehicle keys within a tin can, which was free, and does the same job. Like the tip about disabling the keyless entry though. Wasn't aware of that one. Thanks!
Thank you - some great tips. I regularly check the faraday pouch still works. Two or three have eventually failed, the protective layer having been damaged with constant use. One tip is to only place the key itself in the pouch and not any other keys or keyrings, a mistake I made in the past. I also use the StopLock and am considering a tracker and the Ghost-type security device.
I'm waiting to get my Discovery 4 Landmark back after it was stolen back in April. Although the car has keyless entry, the thieves smashed the window and started the car through the ODB port. Fortunately, I had an apple Airtag on a set of keys in the glovebox and the police managed to recover it the same night after the theives left it in a quiet carpark. Advise from the police was to use the wheel lock as car thieves don't generally carry the tools required to get them off anymore and will likely move on to the next one. I think i'll deactivate keyless entry and have a tracker fitted when I get it back... and use a crooklock.
Great tips. A very simple faraday cage for your proximity keys is a simple metal box from your Christmas Quality Street or an old tobacco can. You get the idea. Agreed that it can be a bit bulky to carry your keys around in when going to the mall, for that you should probably key something smaller and soft, like what you showed.
I don’t have a car with a proximity key, but if I wanted to test it, simply put the key in the pouch or tin can and walk up to your car and see it the car can “see” the key. Don’t forget to close the pouch or close the tin can lid.
It definitely works, at least it does on my two Audi's, I've placed the metal box right next to the door handle and pulled on the handle and all that happens is the alarm goes off, I just use an old tobacco tin and another tip is to take the batteries out of the spare keys and that way unpowered they don't transmit, can't be read and don't need to be put in a tin or pouch.
I’ve had a First Edition Evoque since new for 18 months. Done 21,000 miles mainly motorway driving. Yesterday morning I disabled keyless entry for the first time. On returning to car several hours later low battery level message appeared- seemed a coincidence after disabling keyless entry. Land Rover Assist came out this morning - low battery level reappeared. Engineer didn’t think disabling had caused problem - battery was very low. After doing various tests, and then disconnecting and reconnecting battery all was OK. Engineer now says disabling keyless entry WAS the cause!!! I’ve seen a post on a forum where the same thing happened to someone else!
Well - my car has done about 200 mainly motorway miles since being “fixed”. This morning, after being parked for about 18 hours, battery was so flat couldn’t even unlock car with remote and also LIGHTS ILLUMINATING REAR NUMBER PLATE WERE ON”!! - hence low battery. LR Assist called again who charged battery and re-engaged keyless entry. Technician- different to first - said h had heard of this problem.
Mercedes keyless has improved. The key only transmits when its in motion so after sitting still for a period of time it stops. Also double locking or double tab stops the keyless and you have to press a button. So far so good.
Brother in law had the best idea. MOMO quick release steering wheel.. no air bags, so no problem. He also had a magnetic switch built into the start circuit. You needed a magnet to make the circuit. Enyone looking for it wouldn't of found it unless you knew the wiring layout of the car as it looked like a relay, even had a third dummy wire.. To be fair 6.6 ltr Trans am,s weren't thick on the ground here in the UK.. 😀😀😀 so not on some TURDS joy ride list.
⚠️This is very old news. My 2002 SL55 AMG had keyless entry 21 years ago. I used to keep keys in metal biscuit tin before deciding to disable the keyless function altogether in 2004. It's an unnecessary gimmick. How lazy have we got that we can't be bothered pressing a button ?😂 I still have the Merc and no one has stolen it because I also fitted a secret switch which disables the fuel pump............more secure than any Ghost system which can be hacked.
Let's say you turn off the keyless entry feature. Hypothetically speaking, if the key was cloned (because you didn't use a faraday box/pouch) a d the signal was relayed to the thieves' cloned key set, couldn't they just press the unlock button and drive off? If that's the case, then this has to be used with the Faraday relay signal blocker, right? Great tip, by the way.
Keyless entry : 1) Buy a small tin of sweets - in olden days these were tobacco tin - that is steel - check with magnet. 2) eat sweats 3) put keys in this tin when you get home Magic. We also have a second tin for visitors since they also like to put their keys in a tin.
you can get foot pedal locks aswel, cant rate them enough they are a pain to get on so they will be worse to get off, ghost immobilisers can be bypassed now
Great video. I was thinking of getting a Disklock but not sure after seeing how they can be cut open. I generally keep my Land Rover locked in a shed it's just when we go off somewhere. I also have keyless entry on my Ford Focus. I do like the convenience of it.
Locked away a sounds good- I think the physical barriers are still good- it’s a massive hassle to angle grind bits off and does take some time so may put any potential scumbags off
Thanks Jason. Whole different ball game with the defender! But not sure I want to share the whole story of my defender security here with how things are right now with them getting stolen
Keyless entry is the way to go and it will stop the RF signal relay permanently except when you press the unlock and lock button on the fob which is only for a brief second and it's free.
I installed a fuel pump kill switch hidden in the discovery without fuel the car isn’t going anywhere. It cost me around £20 for the wire and switch and 1 hours to install .great video 👍
Old metal biscuit tins make good Faraday cages at these frequencies as long as the lid fits well. Or use a metal pan with close-fitting metal lid (not a glass lid or a ceramic pan), which is usually even better as long as the lid edge isn't damaged and fits well. A metal wallmount key box (with hooks inside) works reasonable well if it has a good ioverlapping door seal , but some have badly fitting doors, big holes and tend to get left open (all are bad to block to the signal)
Worth noting that the faraday pouches wear out. Use dependent, but mine tend to work for 1 month or so. Need to keep checking them unfortunately. Mine currently lets me open and start the car...... so need a new one.
Ghost Watch 2, had it fitted to my 520 when i bought it, he turned up at my house and fitted it. I then had to take it to a BMW dealer, i put it in service mode they did various bits and then decided to install a new battery, this activated the system and after 3 hours of scratvhing there heads they called me, i turned up put the code in and it started. Best thing is you dont have to worry about putting a security device into action, the downside is, you do have to input the code via stearing wheel or radio controls. No affiliation but when i replace this car next year i will have it installed on my new car!
With my first car, I used to take the fuel pump fuse out and replace it with a broken fuse (the car would only run for about 10 seconds then cut out and not start again). I was lucky enough not to know whether that would have worked, but always figured that it would be unlikely anyone would figure it out quickly enough to persist in taking the car.
Also, double pressing the lock button deadlocks the doors and arms all the interior sensors. One press of the lock button does not do this. When you double press, the car should give a little beep to indicate its completely armed and deadlocked. Another added level of security
Just to say this is a good video and I also use a pouch though newer Land Rover's use Ultra Wide Band (UWB) to pick up the distance of the key from the car. Even when using a relay device it should know the signal is not coming from the key being close enough so the car won't open. Have a look but Land Rover are one of the few companies to add this to their keys and have been doing for a few years now. I'd think your Disco should have this. Other makes have taken a different approach and put a motion sensor in the key, if it's not moved for a period of time they turn off the keyless entry signal which also works though there's that small period of time when it's on after you've got home for instance. Mobile Phone car keys that only BMW are using at the moment are even more advanced in that they use a mixture of Bluetooth and UWB. This is part of the Phone Key 3.0 specification. Ultimately I imagine all of these might be able to be broken with enough effort but the real key is making it hard enough that most cannot steal a car.
I had a heavy duty yellow steering lock just like that. So they Angie Grinded through the steering wheel itself!!! Now only use a “plate” lock on the steering wheel which covers the whole thing
Good video and useful advice. Wasn't aware of the Ghost immobiliser system, looks like an interesting and "invisible" barrier to a potential thief. Going to investigate further.
As well as the faraday pouch and box, I have the Stoplock Steering lock from Halfords - but the biggest problem with that one (apart from the fact you need to put it on and take it off every time you get out and in), is the storage whilst driving... it doesn't fit anywhere in the cabin or boot area naturally, so just rattles around or steels space from one of the passengers, or rolls about in the boot. 😞
Ghost immobiliser cost about £500-700. Plus faraday puch for the key. Good luck stealing the car, as turning on is not enough, having the key and the frequency. Buttons needs to be pressed in a specific order to before it starts 😂 My friend has one fitted to his FFRR, two windows smashed, wires got cut and tried to start it, they never went past to figure out how to start 😅
Watched your vid and had the Ghost II fitted in my 21 Defender, installed by a technician at my at home and took about an hour. Really pleased with the additional protection 👍🙏
Thanks GREAT video!! Personally I am not keen on these new keyless entry systems. My latest Yamaha TMax has one and that works really well, but in the UK Yamaha made an agreement with (I think) Vodaphone and every TMax was fitted with a tracker (great) but they were ALL fitted in the same place!!!! Doooo.
A Faradays cage does not need any coatings. A metal biscuit tin will work as a Faradays cage by making the signals go around the tin rather than through it. People think that if a car is hit by lighting, the rubber tyres stop the occupants being fried, This is not the case. The faradays case effect directs the energy around the shell of the car and down to earth. This is exactly the same effect as radio waves searching for your keyless fob. Put them in a tin, Sorted.
Mine won’t start so I’m good. Even if it did the funky rear end would fall off anyway. And I’d hear it because of the air compressor or the deep chirp...
When you consider all the things that are biosecured nowadays having some sort of face recognition camera plus/minus fingerprint reader you'd think could be simply integrated to a car, even if you didn't want to go all the way to two factor authentication.

@@johnny71c54 SAAB 900's had gearbox locks. It was only possible for ignition key (on the central gearbox console) to be removed if the reverse gear was locked in place.
@@johnny71c54 way way back in the dear old 60s with the mini I even saw some guys take off the steering wheel ( only had one main big nut holding it on )
I never went that far .lol
Tried it, my friend still got in and drove away, perks of being a hunchback car the if I suppose 😉
Sorry to hear you’ve had both stolen and very strange that with all that security they still managed to take it 👎🏻
I wouldn't buy another D4. They have a history of crankshaft failures.
D4 , best vehicle ever.
Just buy RAV4 a much better car, unlikely be thief's target
@@roywang2541 Thanks for the suggestion, but not a viable option for me due to the limited towing weight of the RAV4
That sounds great you can watch remotely on your dashcams! Sounds like a good set up
You have there, thanks for watching!
Brilliant. Well done. Especially the unlock door method at the end. Implemented immediately. Thank you x
SAAB Cars used to lock in Reverse Gear when removing ignition key......Great idea , happier and simpler times
Brilliant. I have a RR Vogue SE and have been trying to disable the keyless entry. Your method works simply and perfectly, thanks😀
Glad it helped 👍🏻
I worked in a body shop and the amount of vehicles being stolen now by confrontation in your own home and even beating up the owners is getting rediculous, even when the keys have been handed over. The only answer to this is don't buy a desirable car/watch etc.
Scary facts!
Don't flaunt your wealth! Dress down. Travel with cheap-looking luggage. No bling!
Great video and advice. Land Rovers/ Range Rovers however are generally stolen by a new key being coded by via the obd port. Ghost is a great bit of kit as prevents relay, key programming and key theft.
Never knew that Geoff- seems like it’s almost an impossible task stopping them getting stolen! 👎🏻
@@thedoctorsgarage It's a nightmare. I'm a stolen vehicle examiner & I'm flat out either recovering or examining rung ones. JLR vehicles make up a large amount of my work. Scarily kit to unlock & program keys are easily & cheaply available nowadays.
So one could hide an obd port switch
But unfortunately, as the video shows, they managed to release the parking brake, exactly how my neighbours' BMW was stolen, they towed it away
just another example of bad security engineering by the manufacturer. By now, after decades of car theft, the consumer should not have to mess around like this. I would go further and say that legislation should be introduced that makes the car manufacturer liable if all the security/entry features are enabled and a car is stolen.
A few have said the same to be fair- it’s does seem stupid when they are so easy to steal due to technology on the car
Just pop your key in the microwave oven when you get home, perfect Faraday cage. I put mine in the centre of the turntable so impossible to miss when you come to cook something 👍🏻
Good idea
Makes breaking in to a defender look hard. Good video just crazy how easy it looks to take a new car.
😂 it does! I miss having a proper key in new cars 🔑
😂😂😂😂👌🏻
I didn't mess around here, protected my RRS from day one, pouches for the keys, those pouches go in a box in the house and my private driveway access has 4 telescopic bollards blocking the car in!
Sounds good! 👌🏻
Great tips for the low level car thieves, the more determined will break into your house to search for the keys or threaten you to hand them over. We have spate of BMWs been targeted in the Manchester area and this is their method for stealing cars, make sure that your house security is also up to spec.
Not good is it! 🙄
Safest way is not to have a expensive car I am afraid.
Ghost immobiliser is the best peice of kit you can have. It stoppped my m4 being stolen last year!
Great to hear a success story!
Sounds pretty safe Peter!👌🏻
Sounds like you have been very unlucky Stephen! Some great ideas there 👌🏻
Spot on .....
Thanks Kizzy P- Dashcam tip is a good one 👌🏻👌🏻
If it’s disabled it’s disabled. There no need far a tin too.
@@Cous1nJack Yes im aware of that ...I got the tin and kept the keys in it before i knew about being able to disable the keyless entry . Just keep using it now out of habit ...and I know where my keys are !
how u disabled keyless entry
@@2sweet2handle28 Cant remember the exact process now ..its a combination of pressing a button on the key fob a few times exiting the car , locking it then unlock it .think i found it on the velar forum .
May I suggest that there is a point your missing, when your driving you car, if your keyless entry is in a faraday pouch you cant drive your car, so while your driving, your zapper is active all the time, a person surely only has to drive alongside you, to get the signal ?
Great tips, car manufacturers should set their cars to non keyless entry as default, prob save lots of cars from being stolen
credit cards and other bank cards can be gotten aswell with some machines like the ones they use for the cars so its good to put your cards in a faraday pouch when out and about or even at home .
That’s true - especially with contactless amount being so high now post covid 👌🏻
😂😂 great idea 👌🏻
I've got the ghost immobilise on my 335d and totally recommend it.
👌🏻
I have Ghost on my car. It’s the best system available. Amazing that insurance companies give no credit for having it (I asked at last renewal and they said they knew how good it is, but no) but do for Trackers, which tells me they’re probably getting a kick back from them - much more money to be made from an exorbitant subscription model.
Most people have a Faraday box in their homes already, putting your keys inside a microwave will block the signal from them 👍
Didn’t know a microwave does the same job 👌🏻
What was matter with the old fashioned key
Buy the Ghost 11 immobiliser & have it fitted properly & extra tracking by professional company! Also everything you said you must do it!
Agree 👌🏻
@@thedoctorsgarage It’s a must with expensive vehicle & vintage vehicle 🚗 & put your vehicle under a camera when parked.
They could pick up your key signal anywhere so unless you have a completely separate system like Ghost your car is vulnerable. The insurance hit will probably be a lot more than the £500 to install the Ghost system.
👌🏻
Good tips! Especially turning off the keyless entry. Also Worth knowing, as I understand it, newer models with the Pivi Pro (new defender for example) no longer have a tracker fitted, the actual operating system is the tracker (E-sim) which is virtually impossible to remove (unless you ripped the whole wiring loom ou,t then the car wouldn’t start anyway) as it’s part of the internal electrics of the car, there is no physical tracker that can be removed.
most cars are stolen to be stipped so not a problem
Yes the Keyless one is good- glad you enjoyed the video- never knew that about the newer ones
No issue with blocking network signal. Cheap to do if you want the tracking to stop working.
Faraday cage, yep, I use a tin can. Keep all my vehicle keys within a tin can, which was free, and does the same job. Like the tip about disabling the keyless entry though. Wasn't aware of that one. Thanks!
Thanks! Yes easy little fix and definitely
worth doing
An old fashioned Steering lock is the best deterrent 👍
Thank you - some great tips. I regularly check the faraday pouch still works. Two or three have eventually failed, the protective layer having been damaged with constant use. One tip is to only place the key itself in the pouch and not any other keys or keyrings, a mistake I made in the past. I also use the StopLock and am considering a tracker and the Ghost-type security device.
hi there, can u please tell me how u check that? I haven't a clue and my car just got stolen..still in shock, devastated really. thx
Hi thanks for the advice, once we do
The keyless option, then how do I enter the car and start it?
You can just use the button on the keys 👌🏻
Agree- didn’t know any tin box worked 👌🏻
I'd be wary of assuming any of these work, test and verify.
I don’t have a car with a proximity key, but if I wanted to test it, simply put the key in the pouch or tin can and walk up to your car and see it the car can “see” the key. Don’t forget to close the pouch or close the tin can lid.
they dont all work you need to test @@thedoctorsgarage
That’s strange! How would turning a feature off drain the battery more?!
As the Ghost immobiliser works by engaging with the Canbus, be sure you won't invalidate the manufacturer warranty in the process.
Good point -,Never thought of that to be fair
Mercedes keyless has improved. The key only transmits when its in motion so after sitting still for a period of time it stops. Also double locking or double tab stops the keyless and you have to press a button. So far so good.
Ghost immobilizer box or pouch and turning off the keyless system are a good combination to use these days.
Got one fitted, superb piece of kit ,once you get use to the passcode sequence more covert than alarm 🚨 systems
😂 that’s a great idea
The latest model Landrover uses UWB technology (Ultra Wide Band) that completely defeats any form of relay attack.
⚠️This is very old news.
My 2002 SL55 AMG had keyless entry 21 years ago.
I used to keep keys in metal biscuit tin before deciding to disable the keyless function altogether in 2004.
It's an unnecessary gimmick.
How lazy have we got that we can't be bothered pressing a button ?😂
I still have the Merc and no one has stolen it because I also fitted a secret switch which disables the fuel pump............more secure than any Ghost system which can be hacked.
Sounds like a great idea to fit a secret switch, it’s obviously worked! Thanks for watching 🙌🏻
Hi doc, hope you are well, great video, I now done the no5 option and given me peace of mind, thanks mark
Great to hear Mark- keep it safe! 🔒
Keyless entry :
1) Buy a small tin of sweets - in olden days these were tobacco tin - that is steel - check with magnet.
2) eat sweats
3) put keys in this tin when you get home
Magic.
We also have a second tin for visitors since they also like to put their keys in a tin.
you can get foot pedal locks aswel, cant rate them enough they are a pain to get on so they will be worse to get off, ghost immobilisers can be bypassed now
Good ideas
Great video. I was thinking of getting a Disklock but not sure after seeing how they can be cut open. I generally keep my Land Rover locked in a shed it's just when we go off somewhere. I also have keyless entry on my Ford Focus. I do like the convenience of it.
Locked away a sounds good- I think the physical barriers are still good- it’s a massive hassle to angle grind bits off and does take some time so may put any potential scumbags off
use the one that covers the whole wheel
Some good tips. Defender security would be an interesting topic in its own right.
I didnt know the tip for keyless entry turn off. Ill certainly be doing that even though my car is in a garage. Thank you. Subbed straightaway
Appreciate it black night hope you enjoy the channel! 👌🏻
German shepherd and a Louisville slugger, super effective 👍

I prefer M249 SAW
I installed a fuel pump kill switch hidden in the discovery without fuel the car isn’t going anywhere. It cost me around £20 for the wire and switch and 1 hours to install .great video 👍
Thanks Dan - that’s a great idea- did you keep the original inertia switch in the engine bay as well as I believe this does the same thing??
I found a great way to stop my Disco 4 from being stolen … I traded it in for a Toyota RAV4 hybrid
Block my car in with my second car.Job done 👍
It’s always a good way to stop it!
The point of this rf tech was convenience now we need enclosures for these keys. Old style keys were the best instead of the new push button function
Agree 👌🏻
Worth noting that the faraday pouches wear out. Use dependent, but mine tend to work for 1 month or so. Need to keep checking them unfortunately. Mine currently lets me open and start the car...... so need a new one.
Fit a Clifford Clifford Concept 650mk2. Nobody will take it without a tow truck or the physical keys
I also use a ‘clutch claw’ which is a device that clamps over and under the pedals so they can’t be moved.
Will they then break in though and look for the keys
I hope not
Ghost Watch 2, had it fitted to my 520 when i bought it, he turned up at my house and fitted it.
Ours is an old FL2 not a lot of value and not worth nicking. But we love it!
Never knew that about the other brands, interesting- thanks!
I had a heavy duty yellow steering lock just like that. So they Angie Grinded through the steering wheel itself!!! Now only use a “plate” lock on the steering wheel which covers the whole thing
So bad! Sounds like a good move
Good video and useful advice. Wasn't aware of the Ghost immobiliser system, looks like an interesting and "invisible" barrier to a potential thief. Going to investigate further.
Thanks for watching- yes the ghost is a really good piece of kit that’s hard to beat 👌🏻
Use a chain and padlock
What about UWB (ultra wide band)...now on the later models...
Hi Doc. Thanks for the video. Very informative & some good feedback below as well. Cheers.
Thanks Graeme- glad you enjoyed the video and I always the find the comment section really useful too 👌🏻
Trakker Horizon turns the container into an antenna bu changing it's frequency output to low band and can still be tracked
Ghost immobiliser cost about £500-700.
Plus faraday puch for the key.
Good luck stealing the car, as turning on is not enough, having the key and the frequency. Buttons needs to be pressed in a specific order to before it starts 😂
My friend has one fitted to his FFRR, two windows smashed, wires got cut and tried to start it, they never went past to figure out how to start 😅
On my '72 Series III I have hidden electrical switch. Another dodge is a fake (hollow) coil wire.
Great to have a decoy!
Watched your vid and had the Ghost II fitted in my 21 Defender, installed by a technician at my at home and took about an hour. Really pleased with the additional protection 👍🙏
Brilliant to hear- they are great bits of kit 👌🏻👌🏻
THIS WAS SO HELPFUL!!
Thanks!
Doooo.
Thanks!
Great tip that Trebor- never knew you could use a tin as an alternative
Enjoyed the video and some very practical advice. I believe the MY21 and onwards LR Discovery has better security? Any view?
I do hear LR have improved the security however I still see daily posts on stolen Facebook groups of brand new models getting stolen so not sure 😐
My Jag is in a garage and my German Shepherd has access, it also has a disclock
steering locks can be removed easily. you can also just fit a cheap switch to the ignition switch under the dash. The car won't then start.
Just discovered your channel..subscribed..great information
Thanks for the Heads Up, Good Show.
Thanks!
Mine won’t start so I’m good. Even if it did the funky rear end would fall off anyway. And I’d hear it because of the air compressor or the deep chirp...
😂😂
When you consider all the things that are biosecured nowadays having some sort of face recognition camera plus/minus fingerprint reader you'd think could be simply integrated to a car, even if you didn't want to go all the way to two factor authentication.
