Hand forging damascus is no joke! That's extremely impressive in itself, and your final product is stellar. I'm sure everyone will tell you the couple of weld flaws are irrelevant in the grand scheme of your project, me included, but the fact that they matter to you after it all speaks to the level of care you put into your work. I have no doubt your next one will be better! How many hours did you put into the forging? Do you think there would have been enough material to get 2 knives out of the full stack if you hadn't cut the middle sections out?
It definitely is not a joke 😅 I don’t know if I will be doing that again…. I appreciate that. Definitely went back and forth about the flaws for days. In the end decided I wouldn’t feel good about selling it. I think I put 20 ish hours into forging? I kept all the cut offs. I have a project in mind for them for sure 👌🏻
Matt, I have a warning you really should listen to please. I am also a bladesmith and I wore gloves while grinding for years. Then I had a very kind gentleman comment saying that I shouldn’t do that. I didn’t take his advice and my glove caught in the grinder and ripped off my thumb. From one bladesmith to another, please don’t read gloves with grinders! Thanks for the awesome videos I love them!
Oh my gosh 😨 I’m so sorry that happened, that is a TERRIBLE Experience. Glad you’re still making though. I’ll keep that in mind for sure. I had basically the exact opposite experience (not as bad thankfully) and is why I decided to glove it up on a grinder. I was using a gigantic grinder called a “bater” (5HP, 3” wide by 148” belt) and my hand slipped and I ground off a lot of my thumbnail and the tip of my thumb. It sucked so freaking bad. But I guess getting it torn off would be significantly worse. Haha extreme caution is required in this craft 😅
@ yes it is. I have done the same thing😂 but with a 36 on my 72. Yeah grinders are awesome but pretty dangerous. Luckily I was able to have it re-attached and can type this right now but it was still pretty bad😂
That blade looks incredible. I would really like to see some kind of coffee darkening just to get even more contrast on this gorgeous pattern👀 Oh and just as a question. How much harder is it to make a S grind (hollow grind) on a knife?
Thank you! I thought about the coffee, but once I discovered the flaws didn’t want to put the extra work into something I’ll end up keeping or gifting haha. But I just got into s-grinds and all that, and they’re not too bad. The tricky part is finding a radius platen that actually creates a deep enough hollow. I bought two so far (36” and 24” radius) and they don’t work very well as far as food release goes. They almost make the suction worse than a flat grind haha. But I have had great success with asymmetric grinds for food release.
Fantastic, incredible now give me 14 of em.
🙌😂
Your arrow notes are well done.
Thanks for showing
For sure!
just got the notification for this and am really excited to watch, your knives are so beautiful
Thanks, I appreciate that 🙏
Really a beautiful pattern of the blade … Great work 👍🏻
Thank you!
Increíble trabajó 💪🏻💪🏻💪🏻
Thank you! 🙏
Considering you have no power hammer or press, that came out really well. I really like the overall design. Keep up the good work!
Thank you, I appreciate that! 🙏
Matt that turkish twist style came out amzing i love it just joined the group thanks Mark ✌✌👍👍 bummer about the inclusions still very functional
Thank you so much!! Stoked you’re in the group. There is a lot of great makers in there 🔥💯
Great job, W's multibar is a really difficult tedious pattern to make perfectly, i can relate !
Thank you! It certainly was quite tedious.
Beautiful knife
Thank you!
Really nice stuff, brother. I never stopped learning.
Thanks! Same here, man!

Muy buen trabajo. Me hubiera gustado un grabado más profundo porque es un buen patrón de damasco. Pero está 10/10
Yeah I could see that!! I’ll go for a more hardcore contrast on the next one.
How thick was the handle block when you started?
I think it was 1.75” square or something like that. Bitter root handles is where I got it. Great company
Damn you ground off like two knives worth of steel.
Yep.
Unless yer gonna test it like FIF does, those flaws r minor. Beautiful knife 4 sure! Just keep it awy from Jay N.
Stay back Jay! Haha yeah they wreck blades.
Thanks so much!
😮😯😯👏👏👏👏👏👏🤜🤛
