I totally agree. I got the pleasure of seeing her in Jersey in the 90's I can't remember the dinner club's name but she was there with my other awesome vocalist "Will Downing" my God what a great show.
No twerking no showing off her body no raunchy lyrics no crude depictions just the ultimate in class talent and respectful sexiness that is rarely touched in today's music industry. I love her always have......priceless.

Rachelle Farrell, Phyllis Hyman (RIH🕊🕊🕊🕊), Anita Baker, Regina Belle Jill Scott are sisters with phenomenal voices that singers today WISH they could sing like this. No autotune, just pure, clear, soulful voices that takes the listener to a whole 'nother level. They remind me of the singers of the past like Sarah Vaughan, Ella Fitzgerald, Nancy Wilson, Billie Holiday, Gloria Lynn, Abbey Lincoln, Dinah Washington. All of these ladies used their God-give vocals as instrumentation to make people sit up and listen. Beautiful...simply beautiful.
Rachelle is a BLESSING FROM GOD!!! I worked with Rachelle during this...her 1st Capital Records release. I lived in Philly & worked for Capital Records. During the early 1990's, she lived here too. She's from the Philly area. I had the honor of working this single/album when it was released & I set up/went on in-store appearances & promo events with her on the East Coast. She is a sweetheart to be around & I miss her very much. This song was not received the way it should have been! In my mind..this album was her best. I still enjoy it to this day...I have much love for Rachelle.
In honor of your hard work, I was a freshman at Texas A & M University, watching Video Soul on BET when there was still an appreciation for videos in the mid to late 90s. My friends and I appreciated the music of Rachelle. She seemed genuine in her music and looking at her album cover, she just wanted to be a down home, laid back type of artist who loved her work. Your work and the work of others made it possible for the world to know who Rachelle Ferrell is. Your love for Rachelle is the same love I feel being a fan and reminiscing about those days in the past when she became famous on BET Jazz. Amazing vocals, vocal range, and capability. God has His hands all over her voice and it is good!
levoir96 Thanks for responding Levoir96. It was such a pleasure to work with her. She is the type of person who is very easy to work with. Rachelle is a hard worker & very "Down to Earth". I have very fond memories of watching her genuine interaction with fans & her "Live" performances were "Off the Chart" good!!! And she's..."A Cutie Too"!!! She's "Real People" and deserves sooo much more acclaim than she's received. To me...when it's all said and done, she'll be embraced as "One of the most Talented Singers/Writers/Artist that we were Blessed to Experience"!
TDPROMO , I agree. I feel she is definitely an Unsung Hero in the music industry. I had the pleasure of watching a UA-cam video of her tribute to Patti Labelle as she sung If Only You Knew with Ronald Isley, Peabo Bryson, and Tamia. Being the meek woman she is, she didn't want to outshine her co-singers on stage but it was obvious that she was talented enough to sing Patti's key and hit Patti's note. Again, you are fortunate to meet and work with her! God bless!
You "love how she interprets a song." Rachelle said, "The songwriter translates emotions into words, and the singer translates the words back into emotions." She embodies that quote, right! This girl is phenomenal.
Myex and I seperated, I recorded this on my answering machine, if he called he would here this fantastic vocalist singing what I was saying and meant AND HE CAME BACK! he expressed his love and could feel the emotion through this song HOW BEAUTIFUL thanks Rachelle you are a gifted ARTIST!!!!!
Rachelle has one of the most MELODIOUS VOICES I have EVER HEARD. I have LOVED her singing since she came on the scene. She was BORN to sing. And her songs are BEAUTIFUL. Whoever writes for her really CAPTURES her voice and all of her ranges.
Been listening to Rachelle since back in the day and fell in Love with her singing. If I had to pick a top singer it would be her with her range there is no one out there who can top her that I know of. Her songs have always been deep and Soulful that people can relate to. Today music Cannot even come close to what Rachelle puts out. They need to take note and learn.....
Rachelle's vocal talent and personality is so vast that she defies categorization. That's the first thing I noticed when I saw her live. Her sound and her music encompass a far ranging spectrum of soulful, profound musical expression and she uses her voice like a finely tuned instrument. Truly talented musicians and singers recognize that she's a true diamond in their midst. and a joy to perform with on stage.
This is the best female vocalist EVER. What female has range up and down the scale like her. She writes, plays, and performs.I bet she can dance also. Wonder what she's doing now days?Come back to us sistah Rochelle.
All the reasons you just mentioned, are the same reasons she wasn't marketed in the US. Labels said she didn't fit a particular genre and blacks weren't intelligent enough to understand her. That's why her debut album was released overseas in 1992...but not until 1995 in the US. As a matter of fact, this straightened hair was hard for her to conform to. Then, they didn't release it here. Smh. I saw her at the Wiltern Theater in Los Angeles, she came out barefoot, wearing coveralls and hair was locked. She blew the roof off! I've seen her live over 25 times...and no show is ever the same except in its splendor!
Rachelle's a living national treasure. I don't even care if she only releases an album like once every decade (lol), you know whatever she comes out with is gonna be an absolute gem. It's kinda sad that the music industry never really rallied behind her from the start, even when her 1992 'R&B' debut managed to stay on the charts for more than a year after its initial release! Man, the things she can do with that six-octave voice of hers is quite literally the stuff of legend...
I am in my 40's and I tell my kids and other kids they missed the real fun the 80,s and 90,s music was something you could listen to and it would get you thru the day or bring you back to reality if you had a hard day. It is sad what they listen to and consider it to be real music. Last but not least Racelle Never got the recognition she is a BEAST I have just been watching her videos trying to figure out where is that coming from she almost sounds like a walking instrument.....
She is! She is the embodiment of music and her voice is an extension of her piano. You must see her live!!! Put it on your bucket list! Her debut album is called, 'My First Instrument' 1992
I remember when I was 1st introduced to this sista is was 1992 and it was LOVE at my 1st listen , her vocal range was incredible, the strength and control was AMAZING . GOD gave this sista a BLESSED talent.my favorite album is the Rachelle Ferrell album . I could listen to her all day every day and I DON'T ever miss her in concert .
One of The Most Underrated singers with the voice of An Angel!!! One of your biggest fans since I first heard Somethin' Else. My bucket list includes seeing you live in concert!!! I hope to see you soon!!!! I wish you all the success you dream of!!

you look at her career and you can see how many sold their souls to get where they are. theres no reason why someone this abundant with talent hasn't reached a greater audience (especially in the states)...
I had the great pleasure of seeing her LIVE at the venerable BLUE NOTE JAZZ CLUB in NYC in the late 90s. It was SRO and Miss Rachelle made the wine glasses vibrate with her one of a kind voice. At one point, she kicked her shoes off and proceeded to bring the roof down. Unforgettable!
OMG! I knew of Rachelle when I was expecting a daughter back in 1993 and named her Kayla Rachelle. I heard Rachelle singing on BET sometime in 1992 and she had me in tears with her beautiful voice. What a talent!
What a beautiful song such good lyrics and a very sweet voice of a angel. One of the best R&B of singers not to mention jazz singers in of all time. love you keep making that sweet music.
I remember back in my video music box days when I couldn't go out lol all I use to do was listen and watch her videos, if it wasn't hers it was Anita Baker's if it wasn't Anita it was layla Hathaway and the list goes on and on. but this kind of music really takes me back to a good place when real music use to be real music... man sometimes I wish I could just go back to those good old days but I can't.
Probably not, no. People with Rachelle Ferrel's technical, artistic and intellectual abilities are fairly common but someone like Rachelle who also has the amazing focus and strength to pursue and nurture her vision through many years and styles, are rare indeed. One of the all time greats.
I remember the first time I heard this lady sing, OMG what an experience!!! My best friend fell in love with this lady's voice as did myself but what put the icing on my cake was she was one of George Duke's vocalist, that's IT,George confirmed this lady for me. Although I didn't need his confirmation but I loved George Duke so much and loved the vocalists he endeared, she became part of his family to me. Whenever Rachelle is in NY and stops by the Blue Note, believe my best friend and I are there. Love her much but still awaiting that new CD.
Haven't heard Rachelle in a very long time; but listening to her brings back very pleasant memories. She serenaded me when I was searching for true love. Loved it! 👍⭐⭐⭐
Wow.... Im a South African gal always hunting for great music. I fell in love with this voice the first time I heard her with Will Downing. Soft voice, like little angels whispering in my ears..... she's is MAGICALLY GIFTED!!
Her musical Brothers were all “top of the mountain” with surround sound in-between her phenomenal vocals. ‘M talk’n ‘Bout Grown Folks music! She snuck in the birthday song w/a lil’ Ice-cream cake and candle. The bestestess Birthday (earth day) that I can recall in my 57 yrs. Sistah “Merry Terry”
I wore this out in my senior year of high school. Got love for Mary J but I always preferred this sister more because I was probably the only one jamming this album.
Her voice is a beautiful example of Psalm 108...Sing..and she represents..I have just been introduce to this lady..Im in love..move over all other musical artist..give her some room..
Who is still listening to this iconic song in 2024?
I am Debra. And I will continue. Rachelle is STILL one of the great treasures of Jazz and R&B.

Couldn’t agree with you more. Had the privilege to see her Lin the 90s at the Blue Note - just amazing.

She sang background for Phyllis, while still in high school.

By Far The Most Underrated Singer on the Planet. One of a few that brings tears to my eye's. That is so very hard to do to me.
Yes, it's deep!
The others are afraid of her a force to be reckon with..amazingly talented
