Pohoiki Beach Hot Pond Temperature Readings, Follow-up Visit

- A recent visit to Pohoiki beach to pull hot pond temperatures and check the development of the new beach, formed in 2018. The hot ponds increased in temperature around July 2020, going from body temperature to now 105-106 degrees at the mouth of the underwater vents feeding into the pools.

Thanks for the vid, Great to hear how it is all changing. Only been down there twice since the eruption. Used to only launch from there but had to migrate to Hilo. Guess its time for a nice hot soak and enjoy the new Pohoiki a little more. Catch ya at the next one. Aloha
I can see the upwellings of water. Wish I was there, thank you for a great informative video! 😊
Thanks for the update. We also remember what the old Pohoike was like and we liked it. But on the B.I. one has to accept change. Thanks for talking about the fisherfolk who can't use the
only boat ramp around and can't get out to fish. That's hard. I'd be wary of spending much time in water that temperature because of bacterial infections.
I miss going there to surf.
I wonder how many times over the last 100,000 years this type of thing has happened. People of the future will be so lucky to have all this documented digitally.
Isaac Hale Park, I got there early one morning when the air was still nippy. I tried about 4 or 5 times to get out of the water (And NOT because the floor was slippery, but because the freakin' water was warmer than the air, just too nice. Every time I tried getting out of it, I felt the chill and would do the biggest NOPE back into the water). Seriously, that was the 1st warm/hot bath I've had in a while. I was freakin' wishing this place was closer to a bus stop. But it is not! The closet the buses ever get there is Seaview, then you have to walk nearly 5 miles past there to get THERE. I walked past two cemetaries, two lava fields and a boat ton of forest tunnels, palm trees as tall as redwoods and the thickest, craziest vegetation I think I've ever seen. Seriously, I know the walk is long, but it is SOOO worth it, especially if you like plants and want to get all the amazing vegetation in the flesh. I highly recommend.
Those ponds are amazing with their crystal clear hot water! One day, I hope to see them in person.
It's cool that you're documenting all this to understand Kilauea and her influence on the environment and related biomes.
💜🌋🌎🌊✌️😎
Thanks for sharing this information. Change is constant and I look forward to the fishermen being able to return to their livelihoods.
Thank you Dane!!!
I love these pools The boat ramp pool is the best for a long soak without getting too hot.
Thanks
So beautiful
Dredge a channel, that will fill as the entire beach did? How about find a bit of coast NOT collecting sand and rock bevel it off with a dozer lay some concrete No services no shack just a road into the water and a parking lot
Try to find an inland hole or a low point under a tree root ball that pulled up with the tree collapsed, you can scoop out to fresh water table ck temp there I'd thing good chance those ponds elevated temps from ground water running over hot rock underground and then floating across the aquifer to the sea.
The original boat ramp/swimming area is nostalgic for locals. Much healing is still needed for many of the locals and long-time residents here in lower Puna after the experience of loss. Having the boat ramp in another location would make it a sore point. We need something to pull our community together again. Open Pohoiki Road and the Red Road between Pohoiki and Kapoho, put back the water, the electric, camping, bathrooms and definitely the boat ramp.. put them in.
👍
At one stage the big boat ramp pond was considered acidic. That does not seem to be the case any more? Is it fed by seeping water from the ocean?
The pH is on the acidic side, but is pretty close to that of sea water.
🌈
Is there any info on the chemistry of the ponds? I was wondering about beneficial minerals mostly.
How reliable is that IR reading into water? Don't you have to compensate for reflectivity/transmissibility?
I'd have gone for an old fashioned glass thermometer in this case.
Good points -- we would have loved to do a more formal scientific study!
@@HVERI Thermocouple on a stick is usually pretty easy. Plug that into a portable multimeter, good to go. Think you can get a cheap harbor freight one that includes the thermo probe for under $30-$40. Then if it goes for a swim, oh well. Conformal coat and dielectric grease can somewhat waterproof one of those. Or a used Fluke model 27, which is waterproof, if you don't mind having to do a cheat sheet of ohm to degrees. ;) www.amazon.com/Multimeter-Auto-Ranging-Klein-Tools-MM400/dp/B018EXZO8M Another good cheapie. And that'll to 40 Megohm, so you can use any thermocouple you like on the ohm setting.
Just be careful so it doesn’t break off inside!
What kind What kind of Temperature Reader did you use to check water? Thanks in advance.
I'm telling ya a few sticks of dynamite be the qickest cheapest way. Nice deep harbor......hey don't look at me I'm on the mainland lol
good Idea
Is it safe to swim there? As in clean sanitary
questionable still.
I've stayed in 8 hours at a time every other week for the last few months without a problem
@@SiriusSolar did you find gills starting to form on your body🤪🌈🤙
Wondering if the popular hot pool in the park down the road was filled in with black sand?
@@danielwalbridge1406 sorry to say it has been buried in about 30’ of solid lava in 2018
bacteria loves those pond temps
Yeah, but not the sulfur and acidity. ;)
Yes, and there are warning signs not to enter with open wounds for those reasons. There are locals testing the waters who have confirmed the presence of certain pathogens, which has been a problem in nearby areas for some time. Sufur and acidity can definitely make a difference, but that would seem to depend on exactly how acidic and sulfuric it actually gets. These particular ponds, connected to the ocean by the tides moving through sediment, are likely dampened in that effect, but we should look further into that as well!
This pond healed me of a skin ailment
you lost your boat ramp, thats tottally different
Woow woow 😍💋 💝💖❤️
