Hawaiian Volcano Summary: Kīlauea Quiets Again
This past week, Kīlauea’s earthquake rates decreased to less than half of what they were the previous week, concentrating mostly under the southern edge of the volcano’s summit. Deformation rates at the summit have also cycled down at the same time, with greatly reduced ground tilting as well as a change from extension to contraction across its caldera, Kaluapele. Slow inflation persists in the South Caldera and on the East Rift Connector near Maunaulu, as magma continues to feed into these storage areas, but less so between the recent eruption site near Nāpau and Makaopuhi craters, where ground-tilt was actively moving during the prior two weeks.
Further downrift, Puʻuʻōʻō crater also shows little change, meaning the activity is fully contained within Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park and poses no increased threat to people at this time. Volcanic gas is currently the greatest volcanic threat, especially for those with respiratory sensitivities. Gas emissions are present at low levels from the summit, around the volcanic background at 70 tonnes of SO2 per day.
As Maunaloa marks the end of its 2-year eruption anniversary, the volcano is quieter than average during its pattern of refilling, similar to other temporary slowdowns over the past year.

Hawaiian Volcano Summary: Kīlauea Quakes Ramp Up; Maunaloa Anniversary
Переглядів 487День тому
Over the past two weeks, Kīlauea’s earthquakes have steadily increased to more than double their previous rates. Events are concentrated under the volcano’s summit, Upper East Rift Connector, and Middle East Rift near the recent eruption site at Nāpau Crater from this past September. Ground tilt and satellite monitors show inflation in these areas as magma backs up underground, but uplift does ...
Kīlauea Iki: Layers of Lava (Part 4) - Huge Amounts of Lava
Переглядів 30214 днів тому
By midday on November 18th, 1959, the lava lake at Kīlauea Iki had reached a depth of 112 feet, rising nearly 3 feet per hour. Lava fountains climbed to heights of 1,050 feet by evening, and a 300-foot-wide incandescent lava river poured into the lake. Pumice accumulated across the crater rim, with 1 to 1.5 inches falling on Crater Rim Road by 8 AM. Subsurface gas explosions created small crate...
Kīlauea Iki: Layers of Lava (Part 3) - The Rise of the Lake
Переглядів 15614 днів тому
On November 16 and 17, 1959, Kīlauea Iki Crater’s eruption evolved dramatically. By noon on the 16th, the lava lake was 25 feet deep, growing 10 feet overnight. Geologists ventured onto the lake’s rough crust, observing the molten rapids and channel at close range. As the day progressed, increased fountaining sent surges of lava cascading across the crater floor, temporarily submerging the lake...
Hawaiian Volcano Summary: Kīlauea Filling Quietly as Maunaloa Anniversary Upcoming
Переглядів 18921 день тому
Another week passes on Kīlauea as the volcano quietly refills its magma reservoirs in the Upper and Middle East Rift without many earthquakes. Ground tilt shows another mild pulse of inflation reaching the area of the recent eruption around Nāpau crater earlier in the week, which has since stabilized even as a new pulse may be starting at the summit. GPS data indicate continued long-term uplift...
Hawaiian Volcano Summary: Kīlauea Iki Anniversary As Kīlauea Quiets
Переглядів 159Місяць тому
Kīlauea continued to refill quietly this past week, with reduced earthquakes and slowly inflating ground-tilt similar to the previous week in the Upper East Rift connector and near the recent eruption site at Nāpau. Given the relative slowdown, the USGS Hawaiian Volcano Observatory has shifted from daily to weekly updates for Kīlauea. Underwater to the south, Kamaʻehuakanaloa volcano (formerly ...
Hawaiian Volcano Summary: Kīlauea Quiet Through Swarm at Kamaʻehukanaloa
Переглядів 174Місяць тому
Kīlauea has been quiet this past week through bouts of heavy weather, as the volcano continues filling underground without much fanfare. However, underwater to the south, Kamaʻehuakanaloa volcano (formerly known as Lōʻihi) experienced a swarm of 110 earthquakes “likely related to magma migration” but without any indication of eruption between November 1 and 5. The seamount’s last confirmed erup...
Hawaiian Volcano Summary: Kīlauea East Rift Earthquakes Cycle Down
Переглядів 205Місяць тому
Following last week’s ramp-up in earthquakes on Kīlauea’s East Rift near the recent eruption at Nāpau, seismic rates decreased at the start of this week. This resumes the pattern of earthquake pulses that preceded the recent eruption, as magma continues to be injected underground into the region. This week, inflation appears more evident at the summit while ground tilt between Maunaulu to the w...

Hawaiian Volcano Summary: Hawaiian Volcano Update: Kīlauea Quickly Back Under Pressure
Well this was shortly after I was born.. also it was the year the State of Hawaii was born! ❤
sweet
Great summary! Thank you both!
#6 👍 👍 👍 👍

Aloha Dane, geologist Phil
an eruption this big will likely not happen again for centuries. its a blessing it occured after cameras went into color
You forget the 2018 eruption. Sure it didn't have fountains that high, but the volume was roughly 1.4 cubic kilometers or 1.4 billion cubic meters.

Hahah dat's funny @Dane! Mahalo guys!🤙🤙🤙🤙
Thank goodness everything is good, audio n all this time around for me. Do not wanna miss anything. Presentation tday was really interesting as it was comprehensive Mahalo!
Mahalo guys - sorry I didn't make it to the live stream, I only got home a few minutes after the end of it.
I still cannot believe its gone i was there in 94,95,96 we used to go there at night to get into the thermal pond it was great
Mahalo for keeping us updated. I learned the new name for Loihi today as Kamaehuakanaloa
Excellent presentation as always! Mahalo! 🤙🌺
Geology has been a part of my career and a long standing interest but, for some reason, one question I have not found the answer to. With volcanoes like those of Hawai'i (and more broadly, most volcanic regions) how much of the deposits and edifices are formed of eruptive deposits and how much is intrusive dikes and sills? Clearly, this can't be an easily or precisely determined ratio, since we can only see the deposits on the surface or where erosion has exposed the interior. A few boreholes may also add some data. Hotspots, subduction volcanic bands, and spreading ridges have different sources of melt and different geometry of their plumbing, but should still have those two main methods of addition to their structures, although in different proportions. Do you have any insights for the islands? Does the greater erosion of the older islands give us information we can use to make educated guesses about the Big Island? And, yup, I've been following your reporting since 2018, even during the unspectacular periods. Your dedication and quality of work has been world class. Mahalo!!
It may be worth taking another look at the Kapoho and Aila`au fissure zones. The area at Four Corners has continued to regularly display some small steam releases in early morning before the sun warms the air, however has been only in pre-dawn hours. Today (10/26/24), the entire area had sporadic rain all day and cooler air temperatures. The entire area from the last bend in the road after the last kipuka property until the new speed humps at dusk had steam actively rising from hundreds of separate release points. The area hasn't shown this much steam since early 2020. (Should have stopped to take a photo or some video, but I didn't.) If this high point near the end of the flow has increased so dramatically in temperature, it does not bode well for the Pohoiki road repair, since everything slopes downhill very quickly makai of Four Corners.
Thanks for the info!
i wonder if we will ever see a new pit crater form in our life times?
Nothing flashy, yet always active. Mahalo for the insights on what is happening underground where all the truely important stuff occurs.
Thank U 😊
Its so fast
The audio is awful.
Mahalo geologist Phil!
Wow. Thank-you for this update. Who would know this without watching?
Aloha Ohana, much love and give The Big Island a hug for me
Enjoyed your opening & trailing guitar music VERY much!!
