How do you get the metal rod to retract?

It is a retractable selfie stick and the drill is reeling it in with the string

I tried this and couldn’t get nearly this smooth

It took me sum experimenting to perfect it. Make sure you are using a selfie stick that doesn’t have any friction when collapsing. I also like to film in 60 fps and run the drill a bit faster then slo down the video in post.
