Some people will say for that hour on stage performing its like being completely different from who they are and when the show ends they suddenly step back into their normal life. Others may not feel the same. Just dont get naked on stage and start passing everywhere like Shannon from Blind Melon.
The magic of Pixies is that they makes you realize that the ideals of a "good" voice that you've come to understand mean NOTHING when raw emotion is poured into the vocals.

pixies werent, but their "children" (mainly nirvana for america and radiohead for england) were mainstream. pixies were a bit too rough around the edges to ever be really mainstream; they had neither the extreme pop sensibilities of nirvana or the natural "prettiness" that a lot of radioheads guitar music had during the soft parts. even in the soft sections the pixies always had a ragged, edgy element to them which would probably spook the average rolling stone reader of 1988. i love it though.
