It feels great to know I could get top-surgery without having to take hormones too. (I'm pretty Genderfluid (sometimes I feel more female, sometimes more male and other times I feel genderless), though I lean more towards masculine, so I'm still undecided about whether or not I'd want to take hormones. I am however, very eager to rid myself of my breasts.)

Dara, non binary does not have to mean in between male and female, we can be outside of the spectrum entirely, I myself do not identify as any gender. Also gender fluid people can be entirely male and flow to female, they don't have to be in between, great video though!

There are two different sorts of gender words, those that refer to a person's mental state, and those that refer to a person's genitals, both can be just as arbitrary, take for example a child born with ambiguous genitalia, we've decided as a society that that isn't an acceptable way of being so a doctor gets to assign a gender to the child and surgically alter their genitals, there's other bizarre ways that gender can be bent and messed with, why don't you define what it means to you so that we can provide specific examples

  • @lauradeerfield

I'm 45, and my gender expression has been all over the map. I've always had a good idea of what my "real" gender is (basically "other"), but a lot of confusion about how to live that. After having a hysterectomy last year, I realized how much body dysphoria I've had. I had blamed it on health issues--and thought I'd feel more comfortable as female-bodied having those taken care of. Instead, it's made me more comfortable as gender neutral. When I found out that it might be possible to get top surgery without needing to take hormones or identifying as male, I was very surprised by the emotions, the excitement at the possibility. I would have said I didn't want it--but I now realize that was rationalization.
I am so grateful to the kids, because I'm learning a lot from young people about being OK with being "other."

    • @MaxieGrant
      @MaxieGrant 9 років тому +4

Hello darling. My child is agender (I'm trans). Yes it is delightful! I realized they were actually suffering from dysphoria when I asked them to describe what they were feeling. They came out to me at the same time as I came out to them. They like to present as female around me . . . and I realized they were probably trying to look like pre-transition me, which would have been as andro as possible. So I had this (very wonderful) vision of my "parenthood" being "nonny" to my "baby non." I described this to my child and they loved it. I recognize the feelings you are having . . . it very much helps me relate more to my beloved little Li.

Thank you SO much for this video. I'm gender neutral and wanted to start HRT about 2 or 3 years ago, mostly because I feel I'm "top-down male, halted at the waist." My therapist, though, told me clearly that I HAD to identify as male, live the male life, etc. in order to start. I was so discouraged I never looked back. Recently, I found an informed consent doctor, so I'm thinking about starting on my journey again. Now, though, I know I can get my letter for top surgery from a therapist REGARDLESS of my gender (or lack thereof). THANK YOU!

I think it depends where you are how much has been adjusted, especially in what is covered by insurance or, where applicable, universal health care. Definitely people should look up transition videos to see what procedures they want and what procedures are available both covered and not covered where they live. Lots of places include top and bottom surgeries. It is common for trans men and non-binary enby people to get top surgery but not bottom surgery because constructed penises are not as good as constructed vaginas yet-- both in terms of sex and health. Facial feminization surge and adam's apple shaving can also be available and/or covered. Some of the more liberal places even include laser hair removal (beards, for example, are a big source of dysphoria for many AMAB people).

For me, I'm Agender, so the binary doesn't apply to me. In California, I was able to surgically transition without any problems. No physicians, therapists, or surgeons gave me any trouble, and letters were not needed to get top surgery.

Just remember - the fluidity of gender is transcendental spiritualism with normal ethical paradigms don't apply. Read the Marque de Sade to understand the abstract nature of gender identity expression. Our role model in the LGBT movement should be Ernst Rohm - a revolutionary LGBT fascist who died at the hands of the racist, homophobic reactionary Hitler.

Though I remember spots where I definitely didn't feel connected with my birth gender, the majority of it was, by A LOT. Also, when I first heard of the term "transgender", I didn't think much of it. During the summer between my sixth and seventh grade year, I felt extremely disconnected and I had no idea why. I still didn't think it was gender for the most part, though, again, I still remember points in time where I'd think of things like, "When I move to my new school, maybe I should try to convince people that I am *opposite of birth gender*." In other words, I wasn't exactly aware of the disconnection until mid-seventh grade. I came across the term "bigender" and it made some sense, and that's when I started to question. I realized that my feelings were mostly neutral, but (though I know that masculinity and femininity don't always apply to male and female) being masculine or feminine can greatly affect what gender I connect with more. I thought maybe I just changed masculinity and femininity but it got to the point where a different pronoun would make me feel strange. I don't feel that it is a phase, but I look back and realize that I never really thought about a disconnection until puberty started for me and my body began to differ from my opposite sex, since I've always dressed relatively neutral. Would that be a situation that wouldn't be considered for hormone therapy in the future?

My problem is that I don't want to fully transition, I just want top surgery to help me be more fluid and to help with my bad dysphoria. Do you know if the WPATH standards apply to insurance companies too? Like I'm wondering how I can encourage them to pay even though I really don't want to ever be on hormones. Any suggestions? I'm wondering if you found a gender therapist who understands the WPATH standards, that they can write you a letter and explain what is going on, and that the insurance company would make an exception?
If you run into any issues I'd suggest contacting WPATH directly to see what they would advise. Good luck hon!

I feel surprisingly blessed; where I live, my GYN is from Sweden, and is completely on board with helping me get my double masectomy, and low dose HRT. The only thing he required was I take better care of myself, and loose about 100 pounds. As for HRT, he said he would gladly help me sort it out with my insurance. Ironically, most cis-women despise him; they say he is unemotional, and non validating. He is a matter of fact man, and has been extremely validating of me. I forced myself to accept my male body and even started to enjoy it at some point but I always loved for my boyfriends to call me by female endearment. I thought I was non binary or bi gender. I'll love to go on HRT now as I have been getting more dissatisfied and want to live more as a woman but at the same time I don't want want surgery. I am genderfluid and I had people ask me if I am going to be on hormone replacement therapy or already on it or if I am going to get top surgery and I say "No" to both because if I do, two things will happen; one, I still won't feel comfortable with in my skin and two, all of my hair will fall out, I will get severe acne, and my emotions will be out of whack (genetic problems) I actually have to take a testosterone INHIBITOR so I won't lose my hair or have skin problems. So in a way I am going backwards and sometimes I really hate being genderfluid (especially the random gender dysphoria), I wished my gender identity was something more clear cut but I am glad I don't want to go through replacement therapy or surgery because that is money I won't have for YEARS.

Gender is fluid and glistening and slippery like KY Jelly. Laws based on "age" and the definition of "consent" are used to wage an ideological war against the LGBT community. It's part of the social construct the patriarchy invented to suppress LGBT community and women. And now Rolf Harris is being imprisoned for expressing his gender identity 20 years ago? It's a disgrace that so many of us are still forced to hide in the closet.

I want to point out that most transgender people actually prefer FTM or MTF as abbreviations for Femme/Feminine to Masculine, or Masculine to Feminine/Femme. I understand that "Female to Male", or "Male to Female" are simpler, and easier ways to describe it to someone who isn't familar with the language, but I think it's an important distinction if you want to speak the language that we prefer.
I believe I saw someone else post that gender doesn't necessarily have to fit between the "male" and "female" boxes, but can be outside of that. I'm agender (also referred to as androgynous, or gender neutral) myself, and thus I am one of those people who doesn't fit into female, male, or somewhere in between.
Great video, just wanted to contribute to the conversation! Very informative. :)

In my experience most doctors are not willing to give HRT or SRS to someone who does not identify completely with the opposite sex/gender because this could lead to the patient feeling trapped in the wrong body. I was interrogated and challenged to identify my gender and ran into problems because I identified as other/non-binary/non-conforming since I feel caught between male and female after going through HRT but not being able to get SRS in the past due to limits in insurance coverage and also financial limitations. Now my insurance will pay for it but I am running into problems with getting approvals because I described myself as non-binary, etc since I haven't fully transitioned (although I made it clear I do want to transition to be completely female). If your goal is to get HRT and SRS or any other cosmetic surgery then it may not be wise to tell the doctors or therapist you identify as other/non-binary/non-conforming/fluid/etc. Of course, one should not need to lie. But at this time it does seem that it could adversely affect your ability to get gender confirming procedures paid for if you describe yourself as anything other than the opposite sex.

When you say everyone falls between male and female, I believe that is true when it comes to the expression of feminine and masculine energy. But many people define themselves as either female or male and are comfortable doing so. What TYPE of male or female they are, that can certainly differ from person to person.
Perhaps a simpler way to look at what it means to be nonbinary is that this can be someone who moves AWAY from their assigned gender at birth. And they move towards...well, that different for each individual.

    Hi Dara,
So I came out to my mom and school as FtM in early October. At the time I had no clue what gender fluid or non-binary was, all I know is I wasn't quite happy being called a girl and being limited to what I could wear because of it. When I watched Caitlyn Jenner's MtF interveiw I got excited. I got excited because I never really knew what transgender meant or was or even how it worked really until I watched the intrveiw. So I thought well since I don't like my birth given pronouns maybe I was meant to be a boy. So I told everyone I was trans. But now that I researched more and really looked back on things and been living as a male for about a year it just doesn't feel right. I still like coloured lip gloss, compact, sweaters with a longer frame, nail polish, and skin tight stretchy pants I also like my short haircut and I want top surgery and I don't like being called a girl at all. I just want to know what this means. Does it mean I'm gender fluid? Or non-binary? And how should I tell my mom and come out to my highschool?
    Thanks Xx

Non-Binary is an umbrella term, it includes everybody who does not fit as completely male or female. There are different identities which all fit under nonbinary, for example:
    -agender, having no gender.
-bigender, feeling you are both male and female.
-demigirl or demiboy, people who feel a weak connection to these genders.
For example, a demigirl can feel 10% female, and 90% like they don't have a gender. It can also be 40% or 60% female, it depends.
    -genderfluid, people who'se gender varies.
Al these, and more, fit under nonbinary.
There are also people who choose to use just non-binary to describe themselves, without using a more specific label. Some people want a word that describes them as well as possible, some people want

I Think i am clear with things like my sexual orientation, and things like that. but
I deffinitly feel that i don´t belong one side, not between the sides either and not non. I am not a man inside, but not fully as a woman either, often it feels like a think and act in a manly way (i was born as a boy, any no one was thinking of anything else when i was a little kid i think, even if they said i was different, but they did not fully understand why i was different, i did not either.), but i am not sure. I feel sort a drifting between the two sides, more at the femal side inside i often identify my self as a woman and i feel much more comfortable with that and by being a man full time, but not that much i could get a clear decicion if i should transform my body permanently or not. I don´t want it this way but i hawe no choice.
I just wish there was a magic portal one could step in to and come out as the person i am inside. Possibly a beautiful fairy or someting similar (well, if i had that choise, who want to stay ugly as i feel today, i think wery few people... if i had that choise i had added that too of coure.).
I hope things will be better when i am dead and gone from this world, no metter if there are another life or not.

+milo lugo regardless of what masculine means to you, it's important to respect the fact that +Blondiegirl and +Ellie Barrett struggle with some sort of dysphoria or dislike of having breasts. It doesn't mean that males/masculine-identified people can't have breasts or be comfortable with their breasts, but both of the people mentioned above are obviously uncomfortable with the ones they have. For some people, having breasts *does* make them feel less masculine because of the fact that breasts are typically viewed as a feminine trait by the majority of society. Whether an individual's discomfort with breasts (or any other secondary sexual characteristics) has to do with others' perceptions of them or their own perceptions of themselves, it's important to acknowledge, validate, and respect their feelings without dismissing or minimizing them.
