    princess maker 5 is so long that i've literally maxed out just about every stat, dated every guy, done just about every job, met the requirements for just about every ending and my daughter is still only 17. but its definitely an in depth raising sim and i love being an involved parent in her life

    Each daughter has different backstory
    PM 1 Your daughter is princess from Fallen Kingdom
    PM 2 Your daughter is born from the heaven
    PM 3 Your daughter is the fairy who want to live with the human
    PM 4 Your daughter is the Hero's daughter
    PM 5 Your daughter is princess from another world who escape to the modern day Japan

    I agree, PM5 is way too long. Here's some of my thoughts on it, in no particular order:
    -It took me over 100 hours to beat the game. It's such a pretty and charming game, and I honestly think the writing is excellent, especially in the highest-level friendship events, as well as most events involving Cube. I just wish the game was 1/4 (or even 1/8) as long as it was. If it was just PM5: High School Years, it would've been so much better. Especially since you have more schedule choices in high school.
    -One other thing I should mention is that building friendships is as annoying as it is rewarding. The jealously system becomes ridiculous when you have 20-ish friends, not including the secret ones. Some friends don't ever get jealous (emirin), while others want you to give them all your attention (Hiroko). It's a good thing I liked so many of the friend characters and their events, especially the later ones.
    -One *more* problem is that Princess Maker 5 doesn't let you pursue a career and a marriage, which is perhaps too accurate an emulation of reality in Japan.
    -Adventuring, while very linear, is saved by it's interesting combat system. You can use a huge variety of skills in combat, and I was able to beat 80% of bosses in the game through the music and dancing skills.
    -Your daughter can't die in this one, due to the hospital you live nearby, but going too far in debt for too long will force a game over as you attempt to escape the IRS...or Japan's equivalent. Fortunately you earn a LOT adventuring.
    -In a suprisingly true to life fashion, the people your daughter hangs out with influence her personality. For example, hanging out with the gangster dude makes it very difficult to maintain her already volatile morality stat. I...actually really like this addition.
    -Again, this game is so pretty. I love the pencil drawing/watercolour feel of everything (except your daughter, who the heck approved her design? Her hair is atrocious.) and I took way more screen shots than I needed for my review of this game on my blog. It makes me sad that there's no hope for a sequel.
    -This game has big Tokimeki Memorial 2 vibes. It's almost a girl version of that game, with a little less focus on dating and school itself.
    I could say more but at this point I'm rambling already.
    Overall, PM5 is hard for me to recommend, but easy for me to love.

    Princess Maker 3 actually does give bonuses for jobs, they’re just a lot more obscure than working well. The Daycare job can give you a bonus after working a certain number of times, and the Maid (not Palace) job can give you a hefty bonus if you have a lot of Charm/are in the “Pretty” mood.

    I don't blame you for not liking the Refine versions as much. I have zero nostalgia for the series and only learned about it through a review that Peanut butter gamer did years ago for PM2. It made me want to play it but I was IMMEDIATELY turned off by REFINE's more modern graphics. I like me the pixels and the dithering!

      I'm about to rant in a comment section where it's not needed, but here I go- I can't wait until this trend dies. It seems like in EVERY video game remake, they think that the art needs to be updated to what's modern instead of what makes sense. Games that are 2D do NOT look better in 3D, and often only work well in 2D. Games where the draw is almost entirely looking at anime art, like this one, DO NOT need the art "updated" or changed. The reason you're doing a remake is because the original is beloved. The only things that should be changed are updating small game mechanics that would use reworking, fixing bugs, stuff like that. Like, imagine if they released a remake of PM5 where everything was made into 3D models. Literally no one wants that.
      Sorry stranger, thanks for letting me rant in this reply to your comment

    • @Evilriku13
      @Evilriku13 4 роки тому +1

      @@LunatheMoonDragon actually, you do remakes to imrpove on problems of the earlier title cuz "they aged poorly" not because you miseuse that for a quick buck like companies nowadays do, even the movie industry does that and was actually the first ones to do it very early with movies like Ben Hur. If companies want to rerlease a game in a better look, a remaster is an option but then they chaneg too much graphic or soundwise etc. and then one wonders why the developers did that and if this was something to actually think about doing.

    Weirdly enough, the fact that PM5 is long makes it charming to me. I haven't played it (I've just now found out about it accidentally, thank you youtube recommendations for this!) but I enjoy long, time consuming games that are, well, skill builders. There was an app on my phone that was pretty much identical in terms of gameplay to PM and I really enjoyed it (I believe it was Remember Me?). Obviously much shorter, but it got me into these types of raising kids games and now this is here. Thank you for this video as I now have something I want to buy and get into and also showing the pros and cons so that I don't accidentally end up buying a game I don't like.

    My only gripe with the translation by CFK is one event in Princess maker 5 that happens on Valentine's day. Cube asks the daughter if she's put any thought into who she will give chocolate and she says "well you should do the least not to get blames."
    I have no clue what that means.

    About the PM2 strategy of farming for the first 2 years... you don't really have to. Switching to a Robust Diet will over time add up to a huge amount of Constitution! Plus, I find just making sure she has at least over 100 Constitution (about a year at the farm, more likely less) allows her to perform well in her jobs with enough consistency to only need a break every 3 monthly 'slots'.
    Plus, a good tip - in the very beginning of the game, go to the Western Desert, and navigate (to prevent from getting enemy encounters, camp around every 10 seconds) and sleep at the Demon Cave. When you wake up, an event will happen where you can increase whatever stats (out of a list) you like - including Constitution! If you're particularly lucky, it could go up by 30+ points. It's how I ensure I get her Constitution up to 100 in less than a year, with enough time for other classes/jobs, so she can work decently and have enough HP to last in fights when she gets good at combat.

    I was really interested in PM2, but I didn't want to play a game myself after having seen everything about it, I wanted to kind of be surprised and not have my choices be effected by what I knew was the "right" thing to do. So I decided to play PM5.
    Oh boy, you're right when you say it takes FOREVER. I wanted her to be friendly with everyone, so I devised a Sunday route where she could travel to every available friend and talk to them. You can cheese items to lower stress in the park, if you want to spend an hour clicking as fast as you can. And I felt like she never, ever, EVER got good at her jobs. Even three years in, it'd be about a 60% chance she'd fail. If she wasn't so damn cute I would have given up ages ago. Once she gets into Middle School, even more friends become available, and all their schedules changed, so I would have had to totally reroute all my sundays. I did it a bit, then gave up. Maybe I should go back and play more. It just sounds more like work than a video game haha

    Strangely enough when I played PM2, the stress mechanic was based on faith and morals as it’s limit, constitution was easy enough to level due to her patron god being Uranus and I achieved a sword training instructor on my first run.
    Was pretty poor for money but the wood cutter job helped raise a lot of money, and due to it being late game and her inability to have significant elegance to speak to anyone, I just went down the fighting for that run.

    • @Tiritiribobiri

    This is a well done retrospective video though I want to clear up 1 misconception I’ve come to grasp.
    The Father-Daughter Marriage Endings is not the only “questionable” aspect of Princess Maker 2 as that Ending has been carried over in later installments from 3-5. So in retrospect it seems the series as a whole except the 1st one is questionable in the long run with their content. Not that it matters as the aspect of the Father-Daughter Marriage Endings while creepy and weird isn’t that big of a deal nor is it incestuous. It is Questionably Grooming at worst and Wife Husbandry at best I’ll give you that.
    As for your opinion on Princess Maker 5 it perfectly sums up why I don’t like it nearly as much as the previous installments. The weekly schedule system drags the game to a snail crawl making the whole concept of replayability based on the multiple endings nearly impossible to have the patience finishing the game as a completionist. I personally don’t like the design and aesthetic choices of this one as it was trying too hard to be like the first 2 Princess Maker games while at the same time trying too hard to do its own thing. The Adventuring Feature leaves a lot to be desired as its just simply walking from point A to point B fighting random battles and collecting treasure boxes. No different than drawing a line starting from beginning and reaching it’s end with some obstacles in the way. I’m only playing the True Princess Ending Route and will never look back. To me, this is the worst out of the series.

    • @Tiritiribobiri
      @Tiritiribobiri  4 роки тому +6

      Thanks for the well thought comment! It's cool to hear someone else's thoughts on PM5 for sure.
      For what it's worth, I'm aware of the father/daughter marriage options in games 3-5 -- iirc, I left it out of the script for this video because talking about Japanese games & their representation of sexuality, female characters, and so on starts to feel like a whole Thing on its own, so, I let it be a one-off acknowledgement.
      Interesting stuff though. Culture is interesting.

    • @zethaponderer8470
      @zethaponderer8470 4 роки тому +1

      Tiritiribobiri Thank you for your reply. I’m sorry if I came across harsh with PM5, but that’s because I care since the game itself has so many bugs and crashing issues that trying to get the endings you’re working for requires scheduling that won’t trigger the game itself to crash. Even with the fan and CFK’s Steam Translation the game as a whole is a buggy crash-inducing nightmare to complete.
      Shigeru Miyamoto once said that a delayed game is forever good, but a rushed game is forever bad. Since Princess Maker 5 is considered a delayed game based on how long it took in development before the release of PM4 this saying just doesn’t hold to be true in this instance since PM5 seems to be an anti-thesis that even if a game is delayed compared to a rushed game it still doesn’t mean its good in the long run.

      1. You marry her at age 18... So for those social justice warrior screaming pedophiles, she's not a minor at the marriage.
      2. She doesn't have any blood relation with you at all. Heck, she's just a random girl that a random dude (or goddess) suddenly dump at you. So she is basically just another girl that live at your house. A roommate that can't do nothing at first and need to be taken care of (not that much different from plenty of roommate out there). So it's nothing strange to marry such person... well, may be a little strange... but even the goddess at PM2 doesn't really mind.
      3. You have been together for like... how long... 8 years? Not enough time to bond as (real) family... As a romantic couple? Sure... But IMO 8 years is too short to grow a true family bond.
      TLDR: it's just a sim game... The title is Princess Maker, not Daughter Maker.

    • @Tiritiribobiri
      @Tiritiribobiri  4 роки тому +12

      Hi, video OP here.
      1. Nobody is screaming pedophilia. However, even if they were, they would only be wrong from a technical standpoint. The sentiment (that the relationship is gross) would still be worth addressing.
      2. Blood relation or not, the characters still refer to each other as 'Father' and 'Daughter.' The power dynamic between them is deeply unbalanced; the daughter relies upon the father for food, shelter, care, and even instruction on what to do with her time. There is, by nature of the game, almost nothing that the daughter has control of herself. She is not shown to have other friends (outside of Cube, who is her father's employee and an instrument of his will).
      The decision to get involved with her father is not the independent decision of a rational adult: it is the *guided* opinion of a girl who has known nothing else since she was ten. She's motivated in every way to internalize his behaviours and his opinions, because he is her only source of care, and this is what we call grooming. On his part, embracing that reaction from her is manipulative, and deeply irresponsible as her legal guardian. Nothing about it is healthy behaviour.
      3. 8 years is almost half of the daughter's life up to this point? Also, I'm unsure how you can make the argument that they've been bonding as a romantic couple for 8 years, without acknowledging how that would literally be pedophilia, as in point #1. Either they've been bonding romantically just since her 18th birthday (gross, but not pedophilia), or they've been bonding romantically since she was ten (pedophilia).
      In conclusion, I'm not telling anyone not to enjoy the game! I love the game myself, obviously. And, hey, if you like the fictional father/daughter thing, whatever dude, I'm not gonna stop you. I'm also not gonna pick up a pitchfork over a foreign game from the 90s.
      TL;DR: It's just worth bringing up that it's weird. And getting up in arms to defend it kind of makes you look weird, too, man.

      @@candicoated2001 You do realize that in Japanese culture specifically, marriage doesn't inherently imply sexuality, right? Actually, I think to MANY people, "marriage" is best defined as more of a joint-living arrangement, not much more. Those endings merely only imply that the bond between the two are such that she remains with the man that cares for her (and is not biologically connected to anyway), out of respect and obligation for being there for her more than anyone else, or that she cares about as much. Rather as such, that she feels she can take care of her father as a continued family unit, or that the father mutually agrees to the same in taking care of her for the rest of HER natural life. No sexuality implied and in fact, this is seen as normal in many customs, besides.
      But whatever. Anyway, fuck you for being judgemental and ignorant either way. I may have explained myself but I already can tell i'm wasting my time. I'm sure someone like you really doesn't give a shit about the more subtle and nuanced aspects of discussion on this topic, when your sole contribution is to start throwing around pompous, one-word condemnations over shit that you can't bother to know what people are talking about, anyway. Fucking idiots like you shouldn't be humored in a conversation, so really there's no point in being civil with you, I can already tell.
      At no point does the game imply that marrying the daughter is in any way, sexual. It's something that your sick mind automatically defaulted to by itself, because you know nothing about any cultural outlook but your own, and your arrogance matching only your stupidity is getting in the way of you have anything other than a stupid, gut reaction to it, rather than knowing what you're talking about. The only thing disgusting is your own ignorance of a topic that you think you have something intelligent to add to. Go slink back under a bridge.

      There's a lot of bad faith in the argument you're making...
      The game is filled of sexual innuendo and is barely not a porn game.
      There's like 5-10 endings where your job is having sex daily.
      And while I'm not judging, I'd like to see you say those exact words IRL and be outraged that someone find incest disgusting, lol...

      Saafi But the series is about a Foster Parent (The Player) taking care of a Foster Child (Princess). In what way is the idea of a Foster Parent x Foster Child fully grown into marriageable age having Romantic/Sexual Relationships “Incestuous” exactly?
      Incest = Blood Related. Foster People generally speaking aren’t blood related nor do they have to be blood related. That’s the point of what it means to be a “Foster”.
      It’s just creepy and weird where this relationship can teether towards Questionable Grooming to the point of near pedobear level at worst or Wife Husbandry at best. But Incestuous? Nah you lost me there.
