Much better
Thank You!
Yes, the audio is much better.
@@anticomuna can confirm your voice isn't blotted out by the music, well sometimes. sometimes one is better than the other and sometimes flipped.
Thank you, its an amazing video, just hard to follow at times due to youtube compression.
I'm I noticing that the videos for Phantasy Star have only gotten longer and longer.
Oh this is gonna be good.
Today, I revive the very first RPG waifu war!
Proud of this episode, as much of an ordeal my new editor made to get it done. The only thing I ask is you forgive some of the hiccups in the audio every now and then. By the time I got to a certain point, it would have taken another few days to fix it all to get the job done. But eventually, every video must come out.
I'm just glad that's finally out. Seriously you have no idea just how long I've wanted to see this! excellent work!!!
Thanks Mr gentleman
I Subbed back in the days after having watch your videos on phantasy star, all your in depth critics are always enjoyed by me.
I also see how little of the original story I understood back when I played PSIII, decades ago.
For the other games I have a solid grasp though and also enjoy watching reviews and commentaries on the other episodes. PSIII was lacking in good reviewers' analysis.
For its 30th anniversary you and gaijillionaire who published a video last week really did the work ( I shall put the link also in my next message).
Thanks
Now I am playing sonic mania and street of rage iv... I feel like there could be a hope for a new PSV done with a lot of heart.
I never realized how ambitious Phantasy Star was, especially this marriage dynamic. They really went all out on that here
They tried to make a Fire Emblem but ended up with a flop.
This game was made before fire emblem 4
Phantasy Star 3, for all it's faults, will always be my favorite RPG of all time. I play all four paths once a year, every year, since I was a kid.
Thank you Mr. Gentleman! I have always loved your History of RPGs episodes and I’m so happy you have the dedication to play all these RPGs!
Despite the audio issues, I LOVED this episode. Been a fan of the phantasy star series since II and still hope we'll have a proper phantasy star V some day. This was a great visit through PS3, the definite black sheep of the series but also one of my most wanted remakes. If they had the time they needed, I believe this would have been one of the best in the series. Looking forward to an overview of my personal fav: PSIV!!
Amazing series. Just finished this game and most before it and now feel ready to move on to more modern rpgs. I thank ur videos for inspiring the start of this journey. Hope all is well
This was the first RPG I played. I was 7 years old and bought it just because it was the first time I saw a game fully translated into Brazilian Portuguese. Not a common feature back in the 90's. I hated this game and regret chosing it as a birthday gift. Thank God I gave RPGs another chance and years later found true love in the Dragon Quest series. Enix showed me that I was looking at the wrong place all this time. I eventually went back and played the other games in the series and discovered that PS3 was indeed the black sheep. This game brings back soo many (bad) memories. Great video. Love every single one of your content, dude. But I have to agree with the comments here, your audio seems worse on this one. It was hard to understand sometimes. Keep up the good work. I'm excited to see more from you.
same when I was 7-8 years old I didnt understand RPG and thught it was boring and to much reading and didnt know where to go or what to do in the game. But when I got older I now play mostly RPGs and adventure games with RPG like game play. lol
I prefer this game to II honestly. Yes it has a ton of rough edges but it tried so many things and the branching paths gave it more replay value then most JRPGs of the era. When I eventually played Dragon Quest V and reached the marriage I remember being disappointed because I expected my choice in that game to have the kind of story impact the marriage choices had in Phantasy Star III
My sentiment exactly, great idea bland execution. I will say the broad strokes of the story do the series justice but the presentation is a step back even from the minimalist Phantasy Star II. The atmosphere is rather intoxicating at first but the sheer amount of backtracking and lack of evolution eventually fades even that positive into the background. A think a remake could fix a lot of the issues but given the games reputation (even among PS fans) doubt we'll ever see one.
Same! I'm not really a fan of remakes, but Phantasy Star 1 2 and especially 3. feel very limited by the technology at the time. and I would really like to see them remake these games so we could see them in there true potential.
I have waited so long for this video! I'm excited to see what's in store for this treat :D
And so... The Generations of Doom have come to an end, bringing peace across the galaxy- whats that? The Algo system is having its own issues at the same time? A black wizard named Zio has risen up? Sounds like Phantasy Star has yet to reach its magnum opus... Soon.
Really can't wait for 4! My personal favorite game of all time, and I want to see your in depth thoughts on it.
Yesss
Always happy to see your newest episodes
I've been looking forward to more History of RPGs.
Did you speed up your narration? Because, this is actually a bit hard to understand man. Your other videos were fine. This is.... monotone, like it was speed up :(. Like if I slow it down to 0.75 its, slower, but if I could lower it to like 0.9, then it would sound like your other videos.
His speech almost sounds slurred in this one. He sounds like he's drunk or half-asleep.
I actually found watching at 1.25 speed helped.
Yeah sometimes I found it hard to understand, and he usually has this tone int his videos which I don't mind and enjoy, but this one I feel he mumbled a bit sometimes.
Huh, I watched it at 2x speed because it felt a bit slow to me. Like the game xD
@@DarthEnderX I thought I was going crazy! I hear it too! He sounds like he's on medication at some points. His words kinda blurr together. O,O' Still a great video of course!
I acknowledge that it has some rough edges, but I can never be too harsh on PSIII. It was the first rpg I ever played, and one of the first video games in general I ever played.
Well done. Finally I got the story.
best analysis
Did you use a different microphone? Your speech seems even more slured than usual.
I've been noticing it as well. It might be the new pop filter i'm using. On top of that, I've been using a program to make my voice clearer which works great, except that it makes this slurs even louder. I'll see if I can find a solution to the problem by the next video.
love the phantasy star games, keep up the good work.
I really love this series more and more as it goes on, especially these one on the Mega Drive and Genesis RPGs that i never got to play as a child. Thank you for all of the work you are putting into these.
Aside from the audio issues this was a fantastic video analysis. While I definitely do not think the story of 3 hold a candle to 2 this game has some unique ideas that would be explored by other RPGs and other games. It’s neat seeing an early example of a game with multiple generations each leading to various different narratives it is honestly a rarity.
Usually the choice of who you choose to marry is mostly superficial. I kinda wish that some of the ideas present in Phantasy Star 3 would be brought into other titles as it is truly a rarely explored idea.
awesome, love your videos man. Never got into phantasy star except number 4 but i dig the sci fi stuff in the games.
I really love your "History of" series and I'm sorry to say this but I really couldn't handle the narration/speech in this video. If I could give just a bit of constructive criticism, there's no need to talk like a news reporter with the inflections, just do standard conversational tone. That said, I greatly look forward to your coverage of the masterpiece that is PSIV!
Phantasy Star is my favorite RPG series and I ain't Laian.
...But seriously, found your channel recently and love your content so far. Keep up the good work!
This was a very good video, full of info not only on the game itself, but also on the development side. Although now I have to wonder when we will get the video for Phantasy Star - End of the Millenium.
Hi Mr Gentleman, I wondered if it would be useful to post the script to this episode so that people can have a visual accompaniment to the audio in case they can’t quite understand what you’re saying? Great video anyway!
Congrats on another great one in the bag
Good stuff. Same critique as all the others up to now, you would really benefit from slowing down you delivery and being a bit clearer. Been saying it from vid one there's a volume of info and the breakneck pace and unclear delivery makes taking it all in a bit more cumbersome than it should be. Your scripts have improve an awful lot being far less wordy better vocabulary variety and less overly long sentences. Saying that some serious work is needed on annunciation and pace. Keep up the growth and I'll be sure to start patreon .
Thanks. It's always a tough balance between slowing down and explaining the details and making a video too long. It's not always an easy thing to decide between. Sometimes, I have to make sacrifices between explaining the most important things more (ie. how Phantasy Star III plays with RPG tropes and expectations) and then some of the other, less important things that worth mentioning but may cause the video to be longer than it already is. Doing the Final Fantasy IV script, it was a much easier balance to accomplish than this one for sure.
@@mr.gentleman2358 totally a learning curve man but it's clear your improving with every subsequent episode!
Hoping for the Phantasy Star 4 video before long.
Although I rank it last in the quadrilogy, I don't think it's as bad as the internet makes it out to be. I think that the graphics are better than in Phantasy Star II and the world the game builds is really good. Moreover, Phantasy Star III is also much more playable and accessible than Phantasy Star II. I think that its main problem is that it was very ambitious but needed more time in the oven in order to successfully pull off what it intended to do.
P.S. I've played through all the possible scenarios and my personal "canon" ending involves me choosing Lena and then Alair in order to finish the game as Aron...it's the ending that "fits best" within the whole seires and makes the most sense to me.
Thank you for the in-depth review. Certainly interesting to compare and contrast with other RPGS of its time.
I liked the music the androids and the idea of a technique shop and that's it.
i find the narration harder to understand this time
i think theres too much bass. especially around the 120hz area
I never got into Phantasy Star 3 due to its distinct look that makes it feel different to the previous entries.
The Battle Mechanics feels very different and strange. Leveling up your characters to obtain them juicy stat gains feels weak and underwhelming all around for your Characters when I first played this.
One thing that I found fascinating was the story, but due to terrible localization I could never understand the motivations for marrying certain women for your given Main Character in a particular Generation. Now that I’m playing a Fan Translation to this game, I’m really digging the story despite everything else about the game being underwhelming as a whole. I do like The Kein x Lena pair not because of maintaining the status quo between Layans and Orakians, but simply because Lena still journeyed alongside Kein to rescue what he thought was to be his bride, but turns out that he was already engaged to Lena which definitely adds a conflict of interest. It does kinda make me wonder what would be the best marriage pair for all 3 Generations in Phantasy Star 3 that makes narrative sense?
I didn't even know that there even was a retranslation for Phantasy Star 3.
I thought only PS 1 and 2 had a retranslation.
Your episodes are always amazing and I am looking forward to your look at SNES games is the future. I do hope you do cover shining force someday but this episode is awesome.
This was the only Phantasy Star I never played. Cool video.
We really appreciate the thorough and indepth view of this odd game. I was a huge fan of PS2, but after I got my hands on PS3 I was extremely dissapointed. I did play it completely through for all possible generations and I liked the game enough to draw silly fan art of the characters, but it did not reach the heights of it's predecessor PS2. Overtime, I quickly forgot about this game all together, but I still could remember minute details of 2. It was nice to stumble across this terrific video and remind me of the story lines. One of the most interesting aspects of this game was it's story, and how your choices would effect the overall narrative. I wish there was more connection to the original PS1 and PS2 so it doesn't feel so "outside" of the Phantasy Star universe. The game does have some positive merits and some that have never been repeated in an RPG before, but due to it's very bland presentation, lack of variety, and boring gameplay... it's very hard to recommend it to others except for fans of the series.
This game introduces the dating simulation with future Phantasy Star games like Phantasy Star Zero, Phantasy Star Online 2, Phantasy Star Portable, and Phantasy Star Portable 2.
Please tell me your day job is the guy who explains how to use belt buckles before an airplane takes off.
I really enjoyed your long-length video. I watched it until the end. now, I am interested in the series's story however I will not play the games. I will watch walkthrough videos.
I would like to know, from where have you get the concept arts that showed in the video?
Wasn't expecting this one! Can't wait for FF4 and DQ5. Didn't notice any difference in the audio in this one btw.
In History of RPGs Episode 1, you sounded vibrant and full of life. Here, it sounds like this game is making you bored.
My fav phantasy star , 1 was awesome becouse of what system it was on and 4 was good but it felt I don't know the same way Skyrim feels to dagger fall skyrims better but there's something not there(edit) plus this came out in 1990 (89? Jp?) What RPGs where out then this was a master piece. Did u say this came.out in 94? It def came out in 1990
An hour of goodness😍
i think it'd help if you spaced out your words and sentences a bit, you say so much that if you keep going without giving us time to digest it, it kind of flies by. It's a bit hard to grasp all of what you're saying. at least for me anyway
Just finished binging your videos and I'm a big fan of what you're doing with this rpg series, I'm looking forward to FF4. Any plans to cover western rpg series like ultima? Or other popular jrpgs like breath of fire/or SMT?
Haven't seen anything on ultima yet and that series preceded Dragon Quest. I believe he's focusing on JRPGs.
My first JRPG.)
What's that music on 48:35
37:11. after watching this video. I just realized that Siren IS a T800 terminator but with pink anime hair! O_O OMG! I am SO gonna draw that! XD
I have never played Phantasy Star because i grew up a nintendo kid with FF and Pokemon being my main RPG fix so this is all new and fascinating to me. flaws and all, i kinda want to try these. i also feel kinda silly because i always thought Fire Emblem was the first RPG series historically to do the generations thing but that was six years after this game
Brilliant
I enjoyed this video overall but I can't help but wonder if before making this vid you either had dental work done or you had a few sips of the "good stuff". Your speech was slurred at times and was hard to understand.
I don't see why everyone hates this game. It was waay more playable than Phantasy Star II.
it's how long till Phantasy Star IV?
Where did you get the electric guitar sound track opening
It came from the Phantasy Star Arranged CD. You should be able to find it on UA-cam.
The idea for/of PSIII is great, but the implementation is abyssmal. The world is empty and sterile, the characters meh, the comabt system a huge step back and I don't even want to talk about the magic/tech system. It looks like 1 person tried to do the job of 10 in half the time.
This game is a giant piece of wasted potential. This part of the series is a prime candidate for a remake, especially as it can easily be the starting point for a new series and/or tie into PSOnline.
is it worth it to grind at all in a game like this when you lose your characters each generation?
Nah Wren and Mieu stay but the game is easy enough that you never have to grind
@@yasahana4447 oh really, cool, thx
Looking forward to PS4
A game only ruined by it's utter lack of ANY difficulty. Give the option for a difficulty level closer to PSII and you'd have one of the absolute greatest 16-bit RPGs ever made. As it is, it's only just "great".
@@Cooe. The lack of difficulty never bothered me but the pacing in the last third was always my big complaint. Events just fly by and it seems like a mad rush to finish the story while before that everything moved at a brisk yet unhurried pace that I felt was just about perfect.
Cooe almost all JRPGs post 90s were significantly easier than their pre 90s counterparts; I don’t think it ruins the gameplay though.
@@jba2048 PSIV is a joke difficulty-wise, even by 90's standards (hell, it's a joke by MODERN standards). Final Fantasy VI was EONS more challenging. Lol go play the game again, it essentially plays itself. You have to deliberately TRY to lose a fight, which DEFINITELY hurts the gameplay. It removes all challenge, complexity, & depth from the combat despite otherwise having the best combat system in the series... All the cool stuff like the new Macro features were utterly pointless in a game so painfully easy.
Cooe sounds like you feel very strongly about that. I just like the characters and storyline.
leaving a comment to appease the algorithm gods!
Phantasy Star III had some cool concepts but the game’s poor execution really detracted from this “side story” entry in the series.
i dont know of its the audio or your speech here but it makes it unwatchable. i want to but cant. kinda like this game
I gotta say it's more playable than 2 to me. Yes it's ugly, for a phantasy star game. I assumed it was because it was older than 4(I played 1&2later). Once you get used to it, it's okay.
I imagine playing this game 4 times was tiring. But in one or two playthrough its probably not so bad. I had to restart this game because it wouldn't save, got to dark force in a chest once. Second time it restarted my saveI just couldn't try again.
Sweet
Praise the algorithm lords.
Dude.....can anybody understand this guy? He sounds like Tommy Wiseau
10x!
i don't feel so bad about giving up on this game now
This is my least favourite of the Phantasy Star games. Between the music & story, it's hard to enjoy. The localization is an issue for sure, but is it easy to attain a re-translated repro cart for Mega Drive?
I'm unsure about repro carts, personally. I own a Retron, so I patched the game through it.
4:21???
Are you drunk bro? Not judging.
This game was awful. It had a few good ideas, but it's flaws far outweigh anything it did good. My sister bought me this for Christmas so it will always be special to me. I wouldn't recommend this game to anyone
Dude. Your stuff is always good. But you sound too drunk to understand in most of this video.
A lot of what you say about this game reminds me of FF7 Remake and why I hate it. haha
Sigh, I think on all of these 2020 videos you keep speaking like you have a mild speech impediment, I'm sorry if that's too harsh but this video is borderline unwatchable as a result
Is this dude a drunk sleepy robot? But really though
