Organizing vs Staging is a perfect way to explain the disconnect between Pinterest photos and a home in daily use. Much like staging a house for a real estate showing vs backpacks by the door, prepared and ready to have a smooth morning launch out the door.

A lot of pinterest in my opinion is just organized clutter. My rule is no storage [except bookshelves] should be more than 50-65% full so I have a fighting chance of seeing what I want. It works in every storage space - kitchen, closets, sewing stuff, etc.

In real life, do people actually own 6 bottles of household cleaner? I buy one at a time of most products. We don't even have two phone chargers in our house!

      Brilliant video & tips.
Thank you for being so real. Sometimes when I watch UA-cam videos or ones on Instagram etc they all look so perfect & then I get discouraged because my house isn’t like theirs.
In the UK our houses are a lot smaller than ones in the US & we don’t usually have mud rooms or utility/laundry rooms.
A lot of people have to use their downstairs loo for coats etc & the washing machine is often in the kitchen.

As a big reader, organizing books by color, is just plain stupid! You are correct, how will you find a book you want to read?

Yes! So much good information. My daughter decided to reorganise my bookshelf so it looked nicer. But I like to keep them by author and in the case of my (many) Tom Clancy books, in chronological order. Also I also agree you need to declutter before you organise, just makes more sense. Where I come to grief is with things that don’t have a home. Anyone else have this problem?

Thank you for releasing me from the tyranny of the little squashy packets of clothes that end up a wrinkled mess and takes way too much time to fold! I tried, but no. Currently I’m trying to organize my freezer and make it functional. All the bags of frozen produce is stumping me. (Not hard to do since I’m organizationally challenged). Regardless of how you corral them, when the bags are partially used, they get lost on the bottom. And the odd shape of the freezer drawer adds to the challenge.
Anyway, I enjoy your organization videos. ❤

Haha! I literally refuse to waste life hours decanting items in my pantry. The door stays closed most of the day. I'm too tired after shopping. And unless you buy the exact right size you can be left with small amounts that don't fit!!! So you have to clip the bag and have it hanging around too. Plus occasionally you have to wash those containers- more work. Most youtubers I watch also empty new stuff right on top of the old. Too fussy for me 😊

  • @MegInASheathDress

I can tell you how we solved the books by color issue, and it's functional AND beautiful. We have built-in book shelves in our living room, parlor, and downstairs hallway. They aren't stand alone shelves purchased from IKEA or Pottery Barn. These old colonial homes commonly have tons of built-in storage. My husband was completely against the books by color thing for the reason you stated - we'd never find anything, especially because all of our shelves are full [and I'm constantly culling books].
I decided to reorganize our books by subject and then organize each subject by color and so far it's working great. So we have sections on Marxism, Capitalism/Fascism & Imperialism, Soviet era history, the Cuban revolution, Mao and the Cultural Revolution, African liberation movements, Agrarian Economics, Fiction, Law, Science, Sewing, etc. Then each category is by color. It's working great. And the subjects wind thru the rooms, so it starts at one end of the living room and jumps to the parlor then jumps to the front hallway all the way to the end of the hallway. I put small stickers where each subject started but gradually we didn't need them. At this point, when either of us buys a book we want to keep, we get rid of one.

  • @luvzdogz

I agree with all of these!! I call it the aesthetic perfection fallacy. Social media images are not reality (duh. LOL)
The calendar example really resonated with me. I feel the same way as you - my handwriting is not "beautiful" and it just looks messy and cluttered. And even though almost no one comes in our house except me and my partner, I get self conscious about how it looks, is something misspelled, is there personal data on it?? It becomes a paralysis by analysis trap.

When I think of a book of mine I want to locate on my bookshelf, I can never remember who wrote it but I can remember what the cover looked like. Our memories all work differently. So it makes total sense to me to categorise my books by colour on my shelf. -(- not to mention it gives me visual joy)I’m surprised at the annoyance this provokes in others . We are all unique in the way our minds work . I love books. I have a degree in literature. But my memory for them and the way I see them in my mind is by how they look. i. I suspect there may be others who think like this too.

    • @MegInASheathDress

I did it by subject, then color. So we can find what we need. I started with white books to black and the next subject starts at black and goes to white and so on so the colors snake through the rooms like that. We have bookshelves in 3 rooms. 😮

This is funny for a New Yorker like me. "You don't want to move things in order to put something away." Oh how I wish I could live like that. Maybe someday. Here in the NY metro area, people often live in incredibly tight, often prewar spaces. Have you ever seen one of those ingeniously clever wooden toys where you have to move one part to slide another part to get another part to move up and yet another to slide out then there is a little space and on and on... this is how many New Yorkers live. Our apartments would make a puzzle-maker smile. I wish I had a bedroom that looks like the one you are in. My bedroom is actually now an office with a bed squished into the corner. I considered making it into a loft bed with the desk below, but I am nearing sixty five, and would probably end op on the news as a cautionary tale about little old ladies and loft beds in cramped spaces. I will be wishing for a spacious house and also working towards it.

The "too many" products thing makes me laugh, because we just act like we need more space, when we need to stop buying more stuff until the others are used up. We all do this and then think a bigger house will solve the problem, when the problem is our constant need to buy more junk. I do think sometimes it would just be better to go back to the old fashioned closet instead of trying to have a mud room look, at the front entrance.

So right! I have MS. I struggled for 23 years before diagnosis and a massive way I coped and still do is maintaining minimalism. I say maintain because non minimalists fantasize that it’s a once and done. The fantasy visual artistic minimalists and these colour staged organizers get in the way of really enjoying minimalism. Real life is messy. Less stuff to manage and easy to maintain is the key for me.
Peter Walsh’s statement “You only have the space you have” was a tremendous help. I kept trying to shove elephants into Volkswagens without realizing no amount of organization would make the elephants fit. Rubbermaid tubs were just Junk Bunkers as Don Aslett called them. 2 authors that helped me long before minimalism became a thing.

One of your most important key statements was if it causes you stress…
My husband and I have VERY different organizational styles. One thing that was driving me bonkers was his massive piles of t-shirts in our closet. Heaven forbid he wanted a t-shirt at the bottom of one of the piles - the rest would all fall on the floor! 🤷🏻‍♀️🤦🏻‍♀️
Finally we did some major decluttering and got the number of his t-shirts down to a level that made sense.
I had a hanging shoe rack in our front closet that held shoes we never wore. (Ummm, goodbye shoes!) I got some cheap baskets from the Dollar Store and rolled up my husband’s t-shirts and put a basket in each level of the shoe rack. Now, he can pull out a basket, grab the shirt he wants and push the basket back into position.
We BOTH love it and No Stress! 😁🥳

Be careful when you say “no one” because it can come across as very ableist. I almost turned off the video when you were so adamant about “no one” being able to find books sorted by color, until you said to come tell you if you’re wrong… so I am. As someone who is neurodivergent, I have a hard time remembering certain things. Book titles or author names, for instance. My books are color organized, and it works for me 100% more than every other way I’ve tried. In fact, I try to organize things by color, or at least in a categorical way that makes sense to me, more often than not. Try using more inclusive language, such as “a lot of people” or even “most people I know”, otherwise it can come across as judgmental and like there’s something wrong with you if you do it such-and-such a way. The point is to be organized in a way that works for you, yeah? How it’s organized isn’t as important as IF it’s organized.

You are talking a lot, about issues, but without solutions… venting?
