My biggest complaint with the Hero 6 Black is that the high performance setting like 1080/120 and 4k/60 are recorded in the H.265 format. My older computer and editing software can't handle these files. If you upgrade to the Hero 6 you'll need to run your videos through the HANDBRAKE app to convert them to H.264 or upgrade your computer and editing software as well (if you want to use the high performance settings).

I love the colour over saturation & the new HEVC codec which some might not like, does it record video in HDR? Stabilization would have been nice at 4K 60fps but I guess you can't win them all, I use my GoPro Hero 6 primarily for home movies & out door excursions so don't even use a gimbal . I find the Quik smartphone app really useful for quick editing & sharing footages, the GoPro Hero 6 Black is well constructed & even more convenient to carry around than my smartphone which I never thought possible for a functional camera.

This might sound like a stupid question but where the hell is the pause function for video recording on the GoPRO Hero 6 Black? Are there no alternative but to end & save the footage prematurely? When I do my usual video recordings on a smartphone or most other capable cameras I have the options of start, pause & end as desires. If there are no other choice but to use a video editing app to cut out unwanted scenes & stitch is inconvenient as I much prefer to have the flexibility to choose what & when to record, other than that the GoPro Hero 6 Black is without doubt the best 4K action camera on the market at this price range.
Shooting motorcycle video at 1080@60fps, the H5B often took the details out of, for example, passing a lawn, and turned it into a patch of slightly varied color. The same with passing a telephone pole - the grain is replaced with areas of various browns. Bushes or trees at a distance also become just areas of color and pixelation (square blocks) show up, too. Overall the results were pretty bad compared an SJCam SJ7 (far less detail loss and limited pixelation). The SJ7 has a number of problems, though. The H5B is headed for eBay, as will the SJ7. If the H6B video is comparable. The side by side H5B and H6B sample is very encouraging. But without the 1080 video, even as a dashcam, I have no idea whether I"ll see the H5B problems all over again. 4K is nice, but shooting literally hours of video to edit down to a YT video... just can't be done in 4K except with new 256 and 300 Mb SD's the Heros can't accept, and I can't afford. Bottom line: please compare 1080 @ 60fps from both cameras.
Sight is limited to sensor size, 4k just works in wide, because zooming in, will cause less pixels being used, it has no optical zoom. Firmware update wont help, hardware limitations in place sadly.
Good to see that the footage can just be sent to family and friends without doing any post processing. I ended up getting rid of my Hero 5 Black because you always had to do some post processing for it to look nice. Lens flaring is a lens issue and no firmware can fix that. Same problem with the 4k 60 fps, the hardware (in this case the processor) of the gopro doesn't allow for stabilization at that resolution. Thanks for the review as it solidified my choice to get the Sony X-3000 over this (older model but it's cheaper to get now). It may not have 60 fps but the 30 fps, stabilization and night shooting of the Sony still can't be matched or beat by GoPro.
Nice review. Have you had any problems with power? I had one I had to return because it died on me, and I've started having problems with the second one. I haven't been able to reliably replicate the problem, but the GoPro will just be completely unresponsive. The last time this happened with the new one I was able to get it back by taking out the battery and connecting it to hard line power without the battery in it. It would turn on then, and then I turned it off, disconnected from power, and reinserted the battery and it worked again. It seems there may be a problem with the power management, and when talking to support they even noted it was a known issue. Have you had any such issues? I've read comments in the support hub about it, but not on line, and that seems to be something I would think would get a lot of traffic on line if it was widespread. Maybe I'm just unlucky with the ones I've gotten....
+Mark Gardner That is very odd, you can try doing a factory restore if the firmware it’s buggy that will fix that right up. Also doing a manual firmware installation sometimes helps. I have a video in my channel showing you how to do that if you’re not quite sure. Basically you download the firmware from GoPro and put it on a memory card and power on the camera
It’s a known problem with GoPro to shut off and not power back on. I have a hero 4 hardly used and now it’s not coming on. Tried everything. Have no issues with hero 5 so far. Hopefully GoPro can resolve the power issues Cuz these things ain’t cheap.
Do you have anything to add since this review? I have read that there is some issues with editing on software on a computer. I do all my editing with corel on Windows 10.
While its "only" 100 dollars more in the US, i.e. a 25 per cent increase, here in Europe the price difference is substantially more. In Norway the Hero6 is 50 per cent more expensive! In euro currencies (i.e. Germany) there usually is a difference of 42 per cent more.

I’ve never had a problem with GoPro’s but I ordered the hero 6 for the built in Stabilizer the preview on the camera was laggy so I updated the camera firmware boom I turn it on just a black screen took the battery out tried like 10x all just a black screen nothing! I’m sending it back today and they are sending a new unit hopefully I just got a faulty camera

The hero six is a little more money but it takes much nicer video quality and stable. My recommendation if it is in your budget is to go with the hero 6
Thank God my is laptop is playing 1080 60fps videos shot on Gopro hero 6 camera comfortably on my i3 64 bit windows 10 laptop but couldn't play 2.7k and 4k videos, so I m not shooting in that resolution. Take Care
+Adrian Morton Not a single problem. However I have made a few comments on various videos of mine when people ask. The only issue I had was on launch day when I upgraded the firmware my camera froze. I pulled the battery and it has been fine since. And I have used it quite a bit.
There is an option to enable it or disable it in the menu. You can do so by swiping from the right-hand side of the screen and scroll through the Settings pages until you come to the stabilization screen. I can’t recall offhand if it comes shipped with it enabled
Lots of wishing for firmware upgrades, so not as perfect as presented...and latest news now is gopro is having financial problems so those upgrades are probably a very long way off.

I already am a dissatisfied Hero 5 Black owner experiencing horrible audio recording with an external gimbal and associated issues of which I've addressed the Gimbal audio issues with GoPro's Tech Supp that they never responded to on their forums. I'm not alone on this one. Will you do a review with an external gimbal mount? At this point any will do.
When you have your voice command features on make sure that there's no one by you and say commands to mess up your shoot............Ha..Ha......Just saying!!!
I can upload and edit 4K 60 frames per second video on my iPhone 8. So there should be no problem with the iPhone X. I do all my editing in iMovie for iPhone
Maybe the processor is not fast enough in the iPhone 7. But like I said I can fully edit all 4K 60 frames per second video on my iPhone 8 which uses the same processor as the iPhone X
