I disagree about Bea Arthur. I thought it was refreshing for a non expert to ask Buddy a couple questions that the average person would like to ask. Buddy didn’t usually talk a whole lot about his personal life, but in this case he explains that he had two ruptured discs removed two years earlier and still had pain, which is why he was trying acupuncture. I’m glad she asked.
Bea Arthur was just being who she is and that is Maude... she's so good in the show because she's just playing herself. I actually loved her annoying questions interrupting Johnny's interview I thought that was cool and I thought that was going to be part of some sort of schtick between all of them...lol. I expected any minute they would have Walter come and drag her off the stage. Obviously, I used to watch the show it was one of my favorites.. sadly they're all gone too. We did learn a little bit more about Buddy's condition because of her questions so it was good that she prodded a little bit... anywho, thanks for this great post really was special! Peace, Bob M.
After seeing Louie do drum duels with so many other drummers, including Buddy, I believe, being the good Christian man that he was, showed much respect and humbleness towards the others. I have seen him at his best and he really could have done a lot more to Buddy's ego if he chose to. Because this was not Louie's best and he wasn't really trying all that hard. No disrespect to Buddy, being that he was still, the king. But I guess Louie was happy as a humble prince. He always had a way of making it look like the other drummers were mopping up the floor with him, as he downplayed his role. But he was a gentleman's gentleman. Rest in peace, all the top drummers of old that have passed on. Now they just contribute to the thunder in the skies when it comes. ;)
Mutual respect and fun between two greats
What a trip this clip is.

Buddy Rich seemed to have a lot of respect for Louie Bellson 😅😅😅😅😅. They were great, great, great, great, great percussionists 🥁🥁🥁🥁🥁.
Buddy actually had Louie stand in for him when he got sick on tour.
Incredible! And Happy Birthday Lou!
Don't know if was a Drum battle or a Wig Battle!
Vinny Osborne - Wow, good one! I actually laughed out loud.

No Battle,Buddy Is four time so fast.
So speed makes you better?!?
yeah according to that dude to me speed is speed so what@@thecrippledrummer
Bea Arthur is one pushy person.
She was ex Military and fought her way to everything she did in life, so she was just used to being aggressive.
I thought she added a nice touch. Wouldn't want every guest to do this, but she did well.
Bea Arthur...what a pain in the ass.
Buddy won! LOL
No clear cut winner but the losers
were all the rest of the drummers in the country.
No contest.

Louie was smiling & having a good
time while Buddy was obviously
knocking his brains out to win the
battle.

@@salmonella4u I agree with you 100%!! That was Louie: as great a gentleman as he was a drummer!! Thank you for that insightful comment!!
