I agree, Luigi did NOT get nearly as much screen time as I felt he deserved. I mean it was a Super Mario BROS movie, not just a Super Mario ... movie.
Even Luma had more screen time
Bro I watched the whole movie by watching trailers💀
@Anonymous Anon it was actually a lumalee
That's what the first game is called. Yet - Unless you don't have the second controller or play a port - you'll never even see Luigi.
@@JustANormalMariokarter yeah yeah I just say Luma as a nickname
I wish they could’ve spent more time on Bob Bomb battlefield, Tostarena, and Yoshi’s island. I was kinda bummed that those were just there for a few seconds at a time
And too bad King Bob-omb's already dead. Killed him off immediately lol.
man they cut tostarena completely :/
Agreed. The transitions were WAY too quick.
Yeah it was way too quick
First movie builds a setting the next may use it.
If you’re worried about young kids getting too excited that they interrupt the movie experience, just go to a late night showing. I did with my friends and it was great!
Same! When to the 10 o clock show and it was just adults.
The reason the pacing hurts the movie is because this world is so charming, so much fun, and the characters so endearing you just want to see more of it. I do agree that the movie seemed to go from scene to scene rather quickly when shorter movies have been able to get a lot done without having to rush itself. The best comparison is Disney's Aladdin; that movie has a very quick pace but manages to lets us enjoy the characters, scenes, and music a lot more. But I forgive it because the movies does more good than bad in my eyes
I wish the travel to the dk area was longer like actually them going into bomb mob battle field Yoshi’s island and sand kingdom and not like 2 second clips
I feel the Movie should of been 2 hours long
@@StevenJones851 I think the only reason it was only 90 minutes was so that kids with small attention spans will be able to watch the whole movie
@@KingLemon ah i see why through I'd prefer a lengthy time for all audiences instead
@@StevenJones851 same here but its illumination who are know for kids films maybe the sequel will be longer
I'm in a college town, so luckily my theater mostly people in their late teens and early twenties. Everyone was there to enjoy it. When there was no dialogue/music, people were quiet. Really couldn't have asked for a better movie-going experience, especially for a movie more catered for kids. Can't wait to see it a second time with fewer people in the room :)
For me I love kids so I really don't mind them. Also some kid screamed "😱 DONKEY KONG" during the scene where the trios are at the front gate and meet the security donkey then somebody else scream "That's not donkey Kong?!??" So funny 😂
There were a bunch of kids in the theater when I watched the movie, luckily they were pretty quiet though
@@NotRustyHere See this I wouldn't mind. There's a difference between kids being cute and being brats. It's the screaming/whining/crying that I'm always nervous about.
I totally forgot Chris Pratt was Mario when watching the movie, I hated his voice when I first saw the trailer, but he grew on me and really surprised me with how good he was.
Same
Same. But the opposite with Jack Black as Bowser.
@@brianl8481 What do you mean? Jack killed the bowser voice. Your probably jealous that he might get princess peach. I guess i cant blame ya.
@@CrashTwin You got me. I’m jealous a human male has an anime waifu that doesn’t exist. /s
Tbh I feel like hearing the og mario voice actor saying "it's a me a mario" or "let's a go" would get annoying after a while so I'm glad Chris Pratt was mario
Just made him sound more human with a bit of Mario's og voice in there
And Charlie Day already had that luigi energy so it just fit good
And man Jack Black was a good bowser he absolutely killed it as bowser
My only complaint was the inclusion of some of the older 70/80/90s songs were a little weird, and didn't fit in with the soundtrack. Aside from that the movie was super fun to watch.
It’s a reference to the Super Show
@@paulgilbert5278 well yeah, I know the song at the start is lmao. I'm talking about the songs like Take On Me and Thunderstruck.
No I mean that’s a reference to the Super Show using 80s pop covers. So in a way it’s kinda smart they redo it here
I think when I need a hero played over the training montage fit pretty well
@@paulgilbert5278 my bad, I forgot the show did that, I haven't watched the show since childhood.
There were a few scenes from the trailers that got cut, as well as some music tracks in the soundtrack that were supposed to be in the place of the pop/rock songs, so I hope in the DVD release there’s an option for a cut of the movie with those included. Also, the dark lands are actually a Mario reference, as that’s the name of the part of the mushroom kingdom that bowser controls in Mario 3! My favorite part of the movie was by far the music as well. I absolutely loved all the re-orchestrions of the classic themes and how they were woven into one another!
Man the mario movie was just really
awful because kids wanted to have the same experience I had as a child watching the original super Mario super show
Hi
They’re not gonna change the ost for the home release. Although if people knew what soundtracks would’ve replaced the pop songs, and where they were played, I’m sure some people could easily edit those back in.
Wait, I didn't know that there were cut scenes! Do you know which trailers had them?
@@TreadTheDonutDuck one was the part where Mario got the cheep cheep stuck on his face. It was in the movie but it cut to another scene before the part where Peach got it off of him and it flung onto Toad, which was in the trailer. I'm pretty sure there are other ones as well but I can't think of them off the top of my head. GameXplain did a video on all the cut content that we know of though so I'd suggest watching that
my favourite easter eggs were probably the little easter eggs in the soundtrack, the mario world styled map in dk's house, as well as the kid icarus and donkey kong (called jump man in the movie) game cameos in the movie.
It was such a good movie, but that terrible scene with the dog at the beginning made me worried
I didn’t mind it tbh. I liked the Brooklyn scenes and how they did their plumbing jobs
That scene was really contrived and I didn’t like it wither
I didnt think it was bad but i do feel like it was illumination trying to shoehorn their style into the movie but nintendo was probably like "ok you get one scene" but it added to the plot so i didnt mind, but i hate how the dog made another appearance at the end😂
@@ivanexell-uz4mv the way they did their job was acceptable, the dog thing I wasn’t a fan of though
@@digchiz8174 I mean, I’m sure even if they succeeded in that job, they would’ve still noticed the manhole thing
I’m pretty sure they are coming out with a sequel in possibly a year or two and I’m sure we’ll get possibly more screen time of Luigi. We can definitely tell the next movie will include the brothers meeting Yoshi and maybe we’ll get to meet the other princesses, like Daisy and Rosalina.
Yeah they could go to the places they haven’t shown more in this movie
I'm just hoping for a Luigi's Mansion adaptation in the future, Charlie Day as Luigi was one of my favorites and I'd love to see more of him. I'd love to see even more of all the characters in general, especially to build up their characterization.
I honestly think it will take 3 or 4 years for a sequel, unless it started in development while they were doing the first movie
And maybe bowser will hire Wario and waluigi to get rid of the Mario brothers or smth
@@Ben7892 Ooh that’s a creative idea 😮
Glad the Mario movie is doing good. Definitely can't wait to see it myself!
Same can't wait too see it
Your gonna love it 👍
@@jorgem.9690 thank you so much for telling us it will be good unlike rotten tomatoes
It is great have fun
I wish luigi got more screen time.
Bro same
Yeah same
@Jer&Jon Favorites ya, I think they might do a luigis mansion spin off, I lm hoping, especially because the first theme had a cameo
Exactly what I said when I watched the movie
@Jer&Jon Favorites 😊
this movie was amazing and was way better than the 1993 film
1993 movie was horrible
IKR say it louder Steven Jones!!!
That ain’t a high bar
The 1993 film is an unappreciated masterpiece.
@@philipboardman1357 It's a good movie, just a bad adaptation.
My favorite Easter egg was when the banzai Bill was going to destroy Peach’s castle like in Smash Bros Melee
Yo you do realize the old Mario voiced by Charles Martinez is Jumpman.
i saw it today and i LOVE it. my fav scenes are when bowser sings, mario gets scared, mario and luigi beating bowser and more! it would be better if we could see mario on yoshi
I thought that Cranky Kings voice was perfect
Yea
The Dark Lands is mario themed, Dark Land is the last world in SMB3, where you fight Bowser
What if Peach saying “There’s a huge universe out there.” Was hinting towards a Nintendo cinematic universe? Universes like Zelda, Kirby and Metroid are all connected to this movie, but are just in different joint universes?
And what if Punch-Out is actually in the same universe as Mario? And the Punch-Out characters are living in New York? This would make sense considering the Punch Out Pizza Resturaunt and Mario being a referee in the old Punch Out Games.
Plus,Mario is playing Kid Icarus in the NES. but what if Kid Icarus has a movie and we get to see Pit playing Mario?
I actually have never thought about peach saying that that way. that is a great theory.
The Dark Lands was the last world in SMB3
Give the movie 10-20 more minutes of character interactions and you'd have a 10/10 film
oml there was this one kid next to me, the only person screaming and they LITTERALy SCREAMED AT THE TOP OF THEIR LUNGS when bowser was killing mario LMAOOOOOO
I watched the movie in Canada and it was crowded but I didn't hear kids cry. And everyone applauded in the end.
Mario is always simple, no need twisted plot or complicated story to be great. The true mario fans know about this. They save luigi for next movie.
Great review!
The 80's sound tracks were on point. Don't forget that Mario Bros was launched in the 80's and and majority of the parents can relate to his classic game.
I loved this movie! I thought all of the music was good. Even them including the 80s songs. I think they did that because that was the same decade as mario’s first appearance
I hope Yoshi does talk so Luigi can find him and we can hear Yoshi say "Mama Luigi."
I admit it, im one of the kids that speak midly loud, but its just the references are just sooo charming
9.2/10 movie
kid?
yup, im 13 but thanks to my dad well
lets just say i know a lot about mario (including that one disaster movie from the 90s)
@@SwapyLoL oh lol
Number 5 is so true. I know mario and the childrens appeal, but thankfully, the little kids in my auditorium weren't annoying (just a little. There was just one kid that would repeat the last word the luma would say)
my fav Easter egg was probably when they were doing the parkour in Brooklyn and it goes to a side view and resembles level 1-1 in the game. I just thought that was so cool. or not rly an easter egg but I loved that they included Mario kart with the karts and rainbow road.
I watched this on Wednesday, and I absolutely LOVED IT! ❤
Me too
my absolute favorite Easter egg in the movie has got to be in the beginning when mario and Luigi are platforming in "1-1," they went on a few yellow and brown boxes and if you look closely they are actually the same layout of the first blocks in the og mario bros 1-1
INSANE attention to detail!
also yes Luigi didn't get enough time on the screen lol
11:34 my favorite easter egg was when they entered a house to do a job someone there was reading a book that said galaxy with like good egg galaxy on it
SPOILER:
My favorite part was when bowser sang about Peach's 'Peaches' 😂😂
Honestly this should have been a 2 hour movie, it seemed way too short, and Luigi should have been written as a more cautious character rather than cowardly
That last fail, is so true. There was this girl stomping, jumping, and loudly talking in the last 30 minutes of the movie, and it was annoying. I get it, she's young but her parents didn't tell her to be quiet, they just let her treat the movie like it was Chuck E. Cheese. Good thing I saw the movie twice.
10:32 that exact thing happened to me all the kids started laughing whenever anything slapstick happened
Spoilers:
The more I think about it, the more I realize how abrupt the ending was for the movie. I feel there could have been some more closure on what the Mario Brothers were up to next. Even Toad getting promoted as Captain Toad. Like the movie just ends immediately with them jumping into a pipe.
I forgot about captain toad
The whole movie was like a speed run of a Mario game. No attempt at character building whatsoever.
@@thebatman4279 lol agreed
10:27 real. Even still though, 7:45 PM on April 5th was the only time I could do that day and there were so many kids in the back
The piano screen is my fav in all the movie! I'm sure JB will take credit on that one😃🤣🤣
I just love the DK Rap in it. That was my favorit easter egg if you wanna call it like this
0:06, is a cool reference to the first course in Mario 64. Most of the details are there such as the cannon in the beginning, the bridge, the floating island in the sky and the big mountain to the left.
The short run time problem I feel is there because the movie was directed mainly to little kids. Hopefully there will be a sequel.
A con I would put is to add a better replacement for the SNES Rainbow Road theme that played during the rainbow road scene. I felt like they could've done a better or more grander music track than SNES for example like MK64 or MK7 rainbow road. Idk just my opinion :))
another con would be some missing characters (ex: waluigi, wario, koopalings, rosalina, daisy etc)
I guess its fair since its the first movie and the Main MAIN characters should show up (which again could lead to a sequel) Also the yoshi egg hint at the end hints to a sequel.
P.S heres an easter egg: the person named "Spike" in the beginning of the movie is a refrence to Foreman Spike who was a rival to the mario brothers.
i 100% agree with this and i’d also liked to add, why did they make King Boo so ugly,??? i was so uncomfortable lmao
So glad you mentions the out of plage music. In general I wished they used much more of their own music.
5:35 I want to point out that the Dark Lands is a reference to Dark Land from Super Mario Bros 3.
I was absolutely devastated when I didn’t see toad promoted at the end of the movie. It felt like a perfect opportunity but oh well…
Aside from that though, this is such an excellent movie and have already seen it 3 times because it’s just that intriguing.
lol yoshi talking
Yoshi:Lets go mario
I especially agree with your last point. This is such a good movie, but man.. going into a theatre packed with kids was a mistake on my part. I generally don't like talking in the theatre and they constantly were squealing. 😑
The movie is incredible though. Loved every second of it. 😎
Agreed lol
You can report through sms in cinemas when people are too noisy! I can't stand Dutch people but I LOVE that about here
I agree with mostly everything that you pointed out- I actually liked Mario’s voice after watching it just because of them joking about it at the start and they cleaned it up a little bit and whatnot, either way I am so excited if they make a 2nd movie
The beginning had me think I was watching Secret Life of Pets 3
imo the fast pacing of the movie can be seen as an upside. I think this was just Nintendo's first attempt at making a really big movie (idk if sonic counts cause that's sega but anyways), so they just wanted to laid the groundwork. The movie tried to cover so much to get people to know mario better, in future movies (or hey, why not a series) they can zero in on one location specifically with more time for people to really soak in the environment and immersive worlds. Since so many things needed to be introduced within this first movie (Such as a realistic way of taking down bowser other than friendship, at least with the Kong army) in such a short timeframe, they could not really devote so much time to a specific area or scene, so much had to be covered.
I really think this just leads the way for more potential for a Mario Movie franchise, with more dedicated locations for the next movies now that we know the important details (Such as the origin of the brothers, Mario's journey to become a true fighter, and his fight with DK to prove himself)
Maybe new donk and tosterina as well as isle defino can be in the smb2 movie where they focus more on the mario world with more traditional story and have actual sunshine, galaxy and odyssey location represented.
An extended version for home would be awesome. But 90 mins for theatre was the right call.
9:42 I noticed that movie Peach is alot like Peach, Daisy, and Rosalina combined into one character.
Where I was it was mostly people around my age it seems, im 19. So it was relatively mature, with some respectful laughs. It felt like my kind of people haha.
After this movie, I would really love a Luigis mansion movie
The worst part is there no Bowser Jr or koopolings
I’m looking forward to watching Super Mario Bros 2!!!
That is if there's a 2nd Mario movie
It's a good movie, but it's like the New Super Mario Bros series, it's just a really fun but safe film
luigi (charlie Day) HAS to get a luigis mansion movie since he didnt get enough screen time
Honestly when I heard the Mario Kart 8 Remix Music I was shocked 😦 and it's amazing 🥵
10:25 Yeah, I would never watch a kids movie in a movie theater if there's kids screaming very loudly. That would be a nightmare.
i realy liked it at the end when they were in the real world whaen there was a duck sign which it was the duck from duck hunt
Fun Fact: The Darklands may just be a reference to World 8 or Super Mario Bros. 3 where World 8 is called Dark Land
Naw I can I feel him on the kids part lol. I had kids in the theater that were talking and were excited 😂
The only issue I had about the movie was how fast paced it was, like you said. To me, the movie felt more like 40 minutes rather than an hour and a half when I watched it, it just went by too fast for me.
I love all the references in the movie from the Mario games. My favorite would be the bowsers fury music or soundtrack.
Hey, “Thunderstruck” is the ultimate race sound track. But I get what you’re saying
There is 1 thing that wasn't mentioned here, which I love. Which is that they actually included the animation of Mario's running. The one where he runs and jumps three times
Honestly it would have been cool if in the background of where Luigi ends up, we could see the mansion from Luigis mansion, because I think I heard a little snipit of the Luigis mansion music
my favourite easter egg was bowser playing the cave theme on the piano I flipped out
I was so happy everytime i saw Blooper!!
I loved the hair physics in the movie like bowsers hair looked real and peach had like heart things on her hair and Marios mustache and Luigi’s just looked really good all the hair physics just looked super good
I saw it yesterday, it was awesome… wait for DVD release now.
bro i felt like those oldie songs in the movie were dope as hell!? when mario was going through his training with the at i need a hero playing was dope as shit 😂
I loved everything and the only thing that I didn't care for was anyone's reviews I read before I saw it. I loved Day as Luigi but I wish they showed more of Luigi doing stuff. Also Dark Land is the name of world eight in Mario 3. The Mario Kart stuff was unexpected but very much satisfying
5:34 I believe the dark lands was the name of the Final world in super Mario Bros three.
I would have sacrificed a few esters eggs to slow down on some moments like Luigi having more of a arc and more story development while travelling to kong island
This is the first time I've ever given a movie 10/10. I agree with the trailers. I watched the first one and refused to watch the others.
I feel compelled the clarify something: characters looking the same in Illumination movies is a problem with character design, not animation. Animation has to do with the movement. So for example, the animation would be bad if Mario had a limp when he's not supposed to have a limp in the story. I think Illumination does great animation as the movements clearly communicate what the characters are feeling. And I'll grant that their character design lacks uniqueness.
In terms of pacing it is quite fast and feels really odd but when I try think about what could be added I can't come up with anything. There's not anything in there which needs to be added so I don't really have an issue with it.
All we want as video game fans, is to see a movie that sticks with the game script and things that happen in the game. Finally we get a lot of that and I love it. It is oppose to like Resident Evil where they just say, hey here is a zombie film with Umbrella logo's everywhere...Resident Evil right? NO!
There was a group of little kids next to me laughing, talking, and just being annoying
Charles Martinet being in the movie is pretty neat?
It's-A-Perfect!
mother easter egg was the toad guards saying the princess was in another castle
I honestly didn’t think I would like this movie so much… loved it. Loved DK and the music
What was a breath of fresh air for me with this film is that it respects the source Material.
I agree that it was fast paced. I was hoping the movie would’ve been an extra hour or half an hour. yea I know that would be really long but we could’ve seen so much more and more luigi screen time. And it would give Mario enough time to explore the mushroom kingdom and more cool scenes
Mine was when they told a toad to blow into the cartridge like we used to do to NES games
Something I thought while watching the movie was why was that Wise Blue Toad or whatever not Toadsworth?
Dude, one kid got up from her seat, and just stared at me.
lol, that last fail
My favorite Easter egg is how the capy shop shows up the Easter eggs I agree of that being the best part
Bro I watched the whole movie by watching trailers💀
Kids were screaming when a boulder from Bowser’s castle slammed into the ice near the Penguin King’s castle
FANTASTIC VIDEO!!!
I'm upset with how the Koopa General's entire character was built up just to get sidelined for a Mario Kart joke.
You do make some vaild points as to what fails throughout the movie however I would say that thier are some claims as to justify why these fails which would make sense.
1. The 80's pop music- The movie wasn't just gonna only play video game referremce music throughout the film, thet wanted to mix it up a bit and for the most part some actually make sense like Mario's training montage and looking back the Kong with the sports coat named Swanky Kong dress like he's from Vice City and is crusing with island with Mario & friends which kinda makes sense for the song.
And also its a better choice for them to play these songs rather than any modern day songs which would make less sense.
Amd 2. The run time of the movie- You must remember also that this movie was pushed back so trying to even add more to the narrative woulda be pointless at this point. Also it would be much harder to crammed in even more Mario game refernces that this movie already is full off.
