The indentured pin servant needs a lot more recognition.

I repair pinsetters as my job, and when you said he made a mechanical pinsetter I thought you meant a fully automated one like the kind real bowling alleys have. Its still impressive, don't get me wrong, but for a moment there I thought your uncle was a next level engineering genius.
I’m a lane tech as well, main event specifically. I’m frankly amazed at what this guy has made. Sometimes i think about how much work it took to install all 22 lanes at my job and how many tech and electricians had to work together to get it operational
That’s insanely awesome
I think he did his for more of an aesthetic. Im sure he could manage to build a tether system.
@@tiddlesworth8798 Tether system? What do you mean?
@aidanadkins5922 many alleys use a tether system to reset the pins. The pins are connected by a thin black tether wire to a mackine in up top. When resetting they lower a veil or wall to keep up the illusion but all thats happening are tethers pulling the pins back up into the machine and the machine setting down the required pins.
That pin guy better get a raise for all that hard work 💀

Back when I was a kid, the local church had a 2 lane, full sized, manual alley in their basement rec room. We would take turns working the pins and playing. It was so much fun. They also had a few pool tables, foozeball, air hockey, and a full arcade. All free to any of the local kids.
The only catch was you had to do your homework first before you could play on any of them. And they'd even help with the homework and pay you in their own currency for how much time you spent there doing your homework. That currency could be used for things like paintball trips, or any other of the weekend activities they did off site.
Just to clarify, you said this was a church? That's fucking awesome. My church only had old books and even older people lol
@Atlas Mays yeah it was a methodist church. They had the church and connected to it was a full Rec center with a gym, computer labs, and the basement games room. Next to that was a full private park for all the kids.
It was in a bad neighborhood on the southside of Chicago, and this gave the kids another option besides the gangs. It rewarded them for going to school, helped them with free tutoring, and then gave them somewhere to stay and activities to do until 6pm every day.
They even had a big brother/sister program with one on one mentoring, and never once pressured anyone into joining the church or coming to mass. It was all ran by an old ex boxer named Ray who would take no shit from the gangs and would run them out of the park if they tried to mess with his kids.
If you wanna see it, it's the Union Avenue Methodist Church of Chicago
I would love to one day have something like this for the kids in our community at our church. My wife and I are soon taking over the youth group we grew up going to so it's a big passion of ours. Probably not bowling alleys lol but other things for sure
Man, I would have gone just to get help with the homework… I had a horrible time trying to do reading assignments and trying to figure out how to do problems from reading the books description. I still don’t know how to take useful notes in classes. I managed to get my GED, serve 10 yrs in the USAF, and get in a few college classes but I wish I did do better in school and graduate. Sounds like a well managed church and an awesome example of how churches and faith in a community can make a difference, even if it only helped kids do better in school.
I have something similar here in NM, it's a big, big church, called sagebrush, it's has basically everything you described, a bunch of table games like air hockey and foozeball, they also have a rec center, a little grass field for outdoor activities, basketball, and tennis courts, an arcade, a chapel for grade schoolers, a chapel middle schoolers, a chapel high schoolers, and a massive chapel for adults. After-school activities, they host events after church, they do a lot of fundraisers, they offer volunteer, and part time jobs, and weirdly enough they also had a currency system as well, if I remember correctly it was called sage bucks and you could use them to buy candy, toys, board games, and even game consoles. It still open to this day, it was pretty awesome, but now I just go to a more unknown church that's hosted by a bunch of Korean folk.
I really appreciate the "Funswick" logo, very nice detail
If your uncle is in Brunswick I would love to meet him. Haha. That is legendary!
I love that this setup brings back the pinboy job from the early days. This is so cool!
Ooh, so the pinboy thing showed in the video was only in the early days? I am so thankful for that info, cause i was so confused thinking this is how it worked normally and i just thought these were fully automatic.
Yeah it's cool but you'd need at least 2 people to play. And then would need to take turns being the setter, and couldn't really even play together. One person is always gonna be behind the thing, not seeing a thing or really being a part of the experience..
Ye, but you can't really play by yourself.
Who wants to bowl by themselves in their own house?
@@mike41062 probably something to play more casually while drinking with the buds. You hit the pins, then someone just goes back, sets it up, you wait for them to come back, doesn't have to be professional level seriousness 😂

my grandpa was a pin setter back in the day before it was mechanical. he said that if people were mad, they would throw balls down the lane when he was still setting the pins up. actually pretty dangerous stuff lol
One match a day this goes up in major flames.
My mother bowled in a woman's league at Shaw AFB, South Carolina when I was in 2nd or 3rd grade. I LOVED going to the bowling alley with her. We kids learned how to get to the back and watch the pinsetters work. There was a whole line of black men leaning against a concrete protuberance behind the lanes, all in white tank tops, all smoking Newports and Camels, then CRASH a lane would explode and one dude would get to work rolling the ball back , sweeping the pins and resetting them. Ten seconds of work, then back to enjoying his ciggie. What a memory! Thanks for your video, this brought back a lot of memories. I'll never forget the smell of that bowling alley, a combination of old foot smell and hot dog witb onions. Lol.
No one is going to mention the mini bowling balls?
I mean he did say everything had to be half size
I'm not positive, but they look a lot like the balls used in candlestick bowling, except those don't have finger holes, so they may just be modded.

“Have You Ever Wanted A Mini Bowling Lane?”
YES!
This is beyond cool! I remember seeing a similar one in Wisconsin and I absolutely loved it!
Proof Ohio isn’t that bad
You could make the pin setter automatic with a garage door opener. Having tension on elastic lines that make a grid that crosses on the pin's necks when a remote push piston extends out, the connected single elastic line will tighten or loosen. Piston out, tight line, piston in, loose line. Garage door opener raises and lowers grid board.
The hard part is getting the pins from the floor into the setter.
@@bobh6728 True. Maybe a magnetic base in the pins to place them in the correct location.
Wow! It's so cool. Great work.
Pretty cool- but that also means you have to have someone reset the pins- he could attach strings to each of them and have them raise into the holes

Love this!
Remember half the size in each dimension, so 1/8th the total size of a regular alley. A lot smaller than you might imagine
That should be ¼ then.
@@Steve_Kassiotis no. We have 3 dimensions. (1/2)^3 = 1/8
@@camerongray7767what third dimension of the lane itself are you cutting in half? It's half length, half width, so 1/4 floor area. It doesn't have a height/depth, and even if you're counting that i don't think the height of a bowling lane is going to be your limiting factor for how much space you need. The lane is a 2 dimensional plane (with gutters on the side, the volume of the gutters would be 1/8 an actual alley's gutters). Or if you're talking about the pin setter, sure that specifically is 1/8 volume if it's also exactly half scale of a full alley's one.
I'd hate to be that friend who has to set the pins while the rest of the guys are cheering on the other side. 😂

I used to be a pin boy. We didn’t have a contraption like this guy has. I had to do everything by hand.
One thing you missed in the description is that the guy will lower the deck and pick up the pins that are still standing and then sweep the fallen pins. I noticed that because that was the hardest part of the job. Clearing the fallen pins without disturbing the ones that were still standing.
Oh, and I wouldn’t return the ball until things were cleared because there were some players who would roll the ball as soon as they got it even if I wasn’t done.😂
