You Had to Be Strong Just to Wear the Armor as a Viking

  • Learn from Viking Warfare experts (Kelle and Gernot Longbow) about their armour and the gear that they wear in combat: chain-mail, belt, arm gear, shield, and the sword. They name all the clothing elements, describing what they're made of and how they work.
    The Vikings claimed that their swords were indestructible. That's probably a bit of a stretch. But they must have been nearly indestructible to allow the Vikings to wreak so much havoc and destruction. This webisode is connected to our full episode Inside the Berlin Island Museums (Pergamon and Neues) where there is a longer segment on viking swords.

    "You have to be strong" we carry the same if not more weight in the military but the big thing is weight distribution. Just like old equipment like with vikings, the weight is distributed pretty evenly which helps cut down on user fatigue. Also, plate armor isn't as heavy as one would think either, there's videos showing men wearing it doing cartwheels and such. Quite interesting

    The hardness about the vikings was not necessarily their battles, but also their journey across the seas. They were not the best warriors but they were very very persistent and strong. To be able to cross the seas in the ships they had, demanded more than one can imagine. I have tried, and it is very painfull.

    I do not get why this video is titled the way it is... All around their gear is around 40Lb. That sounds like a lot, but it is distributed pretty evenly, so it will add very little fatigue to any one area.

    • @EGCblackknight
      @EGCblackknight 10 років тому +227

      My experiance with maille is that even with a belt it still sits very heavily on the shoulders and moves alot when you do, throwing off your balance a little. Add to that the sword and shield which aren't heavy until you've been holding and moving them for an extended period. All the little things add up and carrying that extra weight I've found does sap the strength pretty fast, if you are not accustomed to it.

    • @danmartin4552
      @danmartin4552 10 років тому +64

      Yeah I do get that. My summer job involves extensive trailblazing around the 100 mile wilderness of Maine (USA). My load out consist of about 5Lb of blades (Machete, ax, large field knife, and smaller utility fixed blade), a large chain saw when I am unlucky, and maybe even a 3ish pound scythe. When I am using a chain saw I wear Kevlar chaps that are 5ish or so pounds. On top of those I wear light plate armor that I made over my lower legs to help deflect a machete or ax hit. I generally will have a harness over my upper body to help carry gear and maybe use rope. Also I will have a bag with water, rope, tools, what ever I may need.
      All in all it is about 30 pounds of gear when I get out of my car, or boat, and I may do a mile or more of walking. When I set up a little area to work from when I get there, I will end up with about 10-20 Lb of gear on me when moving through the brush. All in all what makes me tired is my 1.5 Lb machete with a 10+ inch balance point, and that scythe when it is needed.
      I can see it as over whelming to someone who is not used to it. It is even hard for me the first week I start up every year. But after a while I feel it just becomes a part of the normal.

    • @MrKbonez
      @MrKbonez 10 років тому +61

      100nitrog yes, 60lbs of padded straps, nice cotton fabrics, ergonomic design. medieval equipment is very rough in comparison, so i would say that the modern infantry has it much easier. plus the vikings didnt have the ability to sue for compensation after a battlefield injury, or being bullied during training, like today's pussies

    • @danmartin4552
      @danmartin4552 10 років тому +62

      MrKbonez O go and quite your complaining. Carrying 60 Lb of gear in a hot dry clement, under constant threat of being shot, is no easy task. Being bullied in training, or sue for injury? Soldiers have a hard enough time getting medical coverage in a timely manner after injury. Have you ever been in the arm forces? How many family members of yours are in? You seem to not know much because any one familiar with military gear knows that they use Kevlar over Cotton mostly.
      I do not agree with the politics that lead these seemingly pointless wars, but cut the poor pawns some slack.

      @NoeLPZC 5 років тому +8

      There's actually some debate as to whether or not vikings wore padding under their armour. Common sense would suggest they did since cloth armour was already a thing, but unlike other types of armour mention of it is curiously absent in the sagas. So it's possible - however stupid it would be - that they just wore the mail over their normal clothes without any padding underneath.

    • @flinfake
      @flinfake 3 роки тому +5

      @@NoeLPZC They had furs and cloaks. Not as good as padded armor, but that is three loose layers of thickish, and relatively sturdy, material. I've handled animals and even modern clothing is a lot better at protecting from bites and scratches than many people would assume. An old school flax tunic, then chains and furs, then cloak would be pretty difficult to cut through and not too bad as a shock absorber.
      It is also important to remember that most fighting involved much shallower and less impactful wounds than most people would think. People weren't being spitted on spears or having their heads caved in by maces for the most part. It was mostly getting a few inches in the abdomen or getting clipped hard enough to crack the skull that put you out. So Vikings weren't equipped too poorly for the lightning raids against the largely unarmed peasantry and clergy they preferred.

    You don't have to be particularly strong to wear mail (as it's called originally. Chainmail is a modern term. Not incorrect or anything, just not what was used originally.) Strength honestly plays a very small role in wearing it. Your physical endurance is what matters. How long you could actually wear a weight on your shoulders mattered more than being able to lift a lot, for obvious reasons. Also, more often than not, from the period their armor and weapons are from, hand protection wasn't really a thing outside of a shield or a hand guard. Sometimes mail gloves were added to the ends of the sleeves, but not commonly. Lastly, the son's mail isn't accurate to history. It is thin and not riveted, which is far from how proper mail is made.

Plate mail had not yet been invented so shields were primarily your protection against arrows. As for their other supplies, it would have been carried on mules or horses etc. If in a small band you would simply hunt and live off the land while travelling for days, weeks or even months, you would sleep and wake up with your armor on. Modern day soldiers get supply drops from helicopters when they run low and get extracted to base camp when in critical injury and rightly so, we have technology now and we should utilize it.

    Thanks for reminding me of that video. I watched this guys' videos a while ago, and I always liked them because of his convenient points on many historical aspects. :)
    You are right that the weight is distributed on the hips and the shoulders, like the video here suggests. The belt certainly makes a difference. I'm not saying that single-layered chainmail would be that cumbersome. But platemail seems more balanced to me, as it's weight is distributed more evenly over the entire body.

    I remember when I was kid I've always wanted a real fookin sword and then when i was like 14 years old i finally could afford a sword. I bought a cheap simple sword for 160 bucks at a medieval market and my friend bought one too. Then with no idea about how sword fighting actually works, we just started to wield the swords at each other. Of course we would wear 2 pullovers and a thick winterjacket over it plus 3 or 4 pairs of jeans, to protect us from the blows. But we didnt wear gloves and hand injuries were part of it 🤣 Doesn't take a minute. So that guy in the video is right when he talks about hand injuries can relate to that 🤣🤣 The guard of the sword saved my hand many 100 times tho.

    Not necessarily. Though Theon's skill at archery and his commentary about how the Iron Islanders have quite a number of proficient archers certainly helps with the interpretation, since the bow was the preffered weapon of the vikings whenever they fought ship-to-ship combat, and they are partially credited with bringing the bow to the British Isles.

    It varies as in all cases, there is finds where there has been used chain mail and scale armor (I'm not sure about the last one). However the likelihood of every warrior being able to afford this or even wanting this (As you said it is heavy) is very low. In all likelihood they wore just gambessons or perhaps just hardened leather (the same goes for the helmets, there is finds of metal but very few). If a warrior was equipped like the ones in the video they were likely a chieftain or king.

      The maille isn't butted, he mentions in the video it's riveted. It's hard to tell the difference with round maille, but when it zooms in you can see the flattened areas and the dome rivets through them. But yeah, leather armor in that sense is more of a 13th/early-mid 14th century thing.
      The thing that most sticks out to me though is the gambesons, not only the armpit holes but the fact that they're there at all when we had no evidence for quilted textile armors for vikings, they'd rather wear one or multiple thick tunics.

    In general, when you could you would go armed in battle. It greatly increased your chances of survival. However, when a descent armou costed the equivalent of today's luxury cars, the less money you had the less you could afford an armour. Also the more far away you travelled the more troublesome to carry around heavy armoury. Vickings did distant surprise seaborn raids, mostly against defenseless villages and towns so really had less need for armour and more need to have empty space for loot!

    Birka find- wide range of sizes, but most rings have a diameter of between 8.6 and 12.5mm, the most common wire being 1.5 and 1.7mm.
    Coppergate- 7.67-7.86mm diameter, 1.07-1.16mm wire.

      +GamingTaylor From reading wikipedia (not very knowledgeable on Vikings myself):
      "According to custom, all free Norse men were required to own weapons and were permitted to carry them all the time. These arms were indicative of a Viking's social status: a wealthy Viking had a complete ensemble of a helmet, shield, mail shirt, and sword. A typical bóndi (freeman) was more likely to fight with a spear and shield, and most also carried a seax as a utility knife and side-arm.
      ...
      The difficulty of obtaining mail armour resided in the fact that it required thousands of interlinked iron rings, each one of which had to be individually riveted together by hand.[2] As a result, mail was very expensive in early medieval Europe, and would likely have been worn by men of status and wealth." (all seems adequately sourced)
      Seems like chain-mail was more of a wealthy man's armor rather than completely widespread. Makes sense...

      +Awale Abdi "As a result, mail was very expensive in early medieval Europe, and would likely have been worn by men of status and wealth." You quoted it yourself, chainmail was only really rare in the early medieval ages. These guys don't have to roleplay/re-enact from that period.
      Also, fun fact I noticed. The text mentions 'bóndi (freeman)'. Bonde is actually modern Swedish for farmer. I'd bet a raiding viking would more likely get himself a set of chainmail, compared to a farmer.

    As some people have pointed out, most Vikings would have used axes, not swords. Axes require less skill to forge, less metal, are less expensive, and are also used as a tool, so they are a more practical weapon for vikings. Also, chain mail was rarely worn- anyone who's tried making chain mail will know why- it takes hundreds of man hours to create a single shirt- it was therefor something ridiculously expensive and worn only by the wealthy and those of high status- thus, 90% of your average every-day vikings would not be wearing mail into battle- some historians argue they wore no armour at all, just their linen clothes and some hardened leather, when they raided Saxony and Normandy. So your average viking had an axe, no armour and if he was wealthy enough to afford one/picked one from a dead corpse on his raids, an iron helmet.

      King Dormak As to my knowledge, I cannot recall there ever been a finding of leather armour in viking burial graves or any records of it in history- leather armour seems like the logical option if chain mail is too expensive, but there are no historical records of vikings wearing leather armour.

    • @Rhynome
      @Rhynome 9 років тому +21

      Mining Forge Well not that unlikely considering leather is organic and wouldn't hold up that much better in the ground than the person's own skin. It might last a few decades more, but not 900 years more.

    • @ericeinarson6654
      @ericeinarson6654 9 років тому +2

      Rhynome Very true- I'm just stating the facts, there's no archaeological evidence of leather armour, you think even scraps of it would survive in a burial mound for example, but that's also a possibility.
      But I think even if leather armour was worn, it would still be rare, the majority of vikings did not wear armour- the shield was the primary defence, it protected a man from the neck to the knee- shields were cheap, armour was expensive, it was cost that was the deciding factor- I'm sure every viking would have loved a suit of mail, but whether they could afford one is a different matter.

    Just lol at the title:
    14kg chain mail, 20kg total armour weight tops is NOT a lot. Modern soldiers have to run wearing 45kg (all the weight on the back, not evenly distributed). Plate armour from medieval period weighed up to 50kg.
    Might seem a lot to a modern couch potato but any active healthy male over 10 years old would have no trouble with the weight of this armour.

    • @LutzDerLurch
      @LutzDerLurch 9 років тому +29

      medieval plate armour wasnt even that heavy. what was really heavy were the jousting armours, but they were essentially highly specialise sports wear, nothing worn in combat.

      And modern soldiers don't have to be strong?

    • @JimGiant
      @JimGiant 9 років тому +7

      Gilmaris I said modern soldiers carried twice as much weight, how does that imply modern soldiers don't have to be strong?

    • @Gilmaris
      @Gilmaris 9 років тому +2

      Jim Giant You scoffed at the notion that vikings had to be strong in order to wear that armour. One would expect the example that followed next to involve average or weak people; not strong people. An example involving physically strong soldiers has absolutely no bearing on the argument, because what you're saying is, "you don't need to be strong to wear that, because strong people can carry even bigger loads". Well, that's neither here nor there.

    • @JimGiant
      @JimGiant 9 років тому +17

      The title of the video is "You Had to Be Strong *Just to Wear the Armor* as a Viking"
      This implies that even walking in the armour requires good physical strength so fighting in it would require near super human ability.
      To make such a big deal of Viking strength also implies that they are superior in strength to their modern counterparts hence why I brought them up.
      If there are millions of people in the world who can not only carry over twice as much as you but run for miles on end with it then you are not strong.
      This isn't to imply that Vikings weren't strong or didn't need to be strong, just that you don't need to be strong *just to wear* their armour.

      Kater Störenfried Agreed- I remember reading something like the smallest shield discovered from the Viking age was 75cm in diameter or something- I recently made one about 95cm in diameter- it covers your whole body from knee to neck when you hold it in front of you- nothing like the tiny dinner-plates these guys are using.

    • @Kettenhvnd
      @Kettenhvnd 9 років тому +1

      As far as i know they used either nothing or some extra layers of cloth. The Rus had sometjing gambeson-like. But i could be wrong. We know fairly little about the early middle ages. But gambesons like those used in the video are from the ca. 12. Century.

    • @SnipinCatz

      Kater Störenfried The reality is we don't know. Gambesons are a popular theory, I wouldn't discount them as "didn't have", when the reality is more like "inconclusive". And that goes for all viking armors. Literally all of them. We don't have enough evidence to conclusively support anything. The cloths and cottons are just as speculative as the gambesons by the way, there's nothing to support them either. They're all good guesses though, the Vikings had an array of linen and wool, the materials traditionally used in a gambeson. We know they had "vápntreyja", and that nearly confirms some sort of clothing besides armors and leathers, we just don't know what it is. Gambesons are loosely defined, they're basic to construct, the Vikings would have ran into them in the late to mid 11th century, and they're made of materials the Vikings were known to have and use. Their winter clothing might even have been similar to a gambeson in it's ability to defend the wearer, there's really no information out there because such materials don't last in a grave. Anyhow, there's not enough information to say they didn't, and as far as guesses go gambesons aren't a bad guess for the mid 11th to early 12th century vikings. Neither is winter clothing, or many of the other cloth materials, but to say gambesons are out of the question is just silly at this point.

    • @sahlabslave
      @sahlabslave 8 років тому +40

      "Vikings are the strongest"
      Wow, that is the least academic and provable statement i have heard in a while. If anything, heavy armor is very useful and effective due to warriors from the middle east (cataphracts/mamlukes) and western european warriors (knights) being very effective. When the vikings invaded andalus, they only succeeded when they attacked weak towns and villages. When they finally faced the andalusian army in a fair battle, all 16000 vikings were slaughtered. All 3 invasions of andalus by the vikings were destroyed. Now i dont hate vikings, they were actually good warriors. But saying vikings were the best and could kill anyone is bullshit due to the lack historical evidence we have about vikings. We dont know anything about their martial arts, or even if they had one.

    I make riveted chainmail, WD 1.2mm (before flattening, meaning that after flattening it is ~1x1.5mm), ID 7-8mm. I've seen in museums even thinner wire, but also thicker. However, most mail made of thick wire has a much bigger ring ID, meaning significantly less rings and therefore smaller weight compared to the wire thickness.

    I think it's also worth pointing out that the weight of the two different mail shirts that the man said are definetly wrong!
    I own and often use a hauberk with shortened sleeves of the same type as he does (riveted round rings), I'm definetly taller and broader than he is and my shirt weighs 15 kilo. So That he said his mail shirt weighs about 18 kilo while it clearly contains less material than mine seems pretty suspect to me.
