I believe i've heard several historians say that the word Viking was invented after what we call the viking age, so the vikings probably did'nt refer to themselves as vikings or 'going viking' when going on raids, trading cruises etc. - Great video as usual :)
Ive been spreading this gospel for years. "Viking just means pirate, most people living in "viking countries" were farmers or craftsmen or other less exciting jobs, calling every Scandinavian a viking is like calling everyone in Japan a ninja."
Vikings traded as much as they raided (trade expeditions would have to travel with many warriors anyway to protect them from pirates, so which one it turned out to be often depended on what opportunities presented themselves) but otherwise yes. I think other people would have referred to the people as Northmen.
The word viking was actually used contemporary. But it's origins are uncertain. Some believe that's what they called the people from Viken (area around Oslo-fjord) others believe it was used on the raiders in general since they landed their ships in bays (vikr). Perhaps both istrue.

I'm glad i gre up in Sweden, we learn ALL this stuff in grade school and more! It's awesome to see the pride we take in that specific period.. Even remember that we had to learn the runic ''alphabet'' xD Made a runestone for my deceased grandfather in art class after that, rest in peace Arne :') And I really do despise how foreigners just think of ''vikings'' or actually NORSEMEN as these macho big dudes in horned helmets etc.. And while yes the horned helmets thought at first to have been vikings but were in fact a whole other age also comes from the 16:th century kings and nobles of sweden who had extreme proudness of their history and just thought it'd be cool to portrait their ancestors with big horned helmets :) And yes, axes and spears were the most common ''tools/weapons'', and the spear was also used for hunting, mostly for boar which are hard to kill with bow and arrow xD Also a common misconception of them were that they were dirty, unhygienic etc which is farther from the truth than you might think, seeing as there were findings of combs and other such things and also that they did in fact bathe more than the average european (in hot springs especially but also at winter, in the snow) which has to do with the most part of eu being christian and there was something in there about not bathing too much but cant quite remember what exactly And a cool thing was that a Persian(I believe) missionary went to Scandinavia to record what life and the people here were like and he of course trashed everything and spread shite about the people here and that is also where a lot of misconceptions come from believe it or not! the vikings would also use Charcoal etc to paint under their eyes and so on to look more terrifying when going to battle, who's to say makeup cant be badass xD And also the norse culture was unbelievably more equal as to men/women in society than the christians, which to be honest isnt too difficult :D Even women could be warriors in norse society reffered to as sköldmöer or shield-maidens in English! Also a cool fact is that asatro never really died out here in Scandinavia, even in the 1800-hundreds for example pople would say ''now loki has ridden through the fields'' when it was misty and poeple would be scared to go outside the farm, but a lot of post viking-era folklore is in fact from that belief, and a lot of records show that many still stayed true to the old beliefs, aaah could go on forever about all this My grandmother and mother are also ''asatroende'' as we call it in sweden which i think is ''asatruar'' in English? Grew up with stories of the gods and also some of ''snorres'' sagas and such, another awesome thing that my mother has been researching foreeeever is our familys heritage which she was able to date all the way back to Fale bure who was one of the last ''norsemen'' or ''vikings'' if you will, also some rus blood from my mothers mothers side but almost 100% scandinavian My grandmother left a peculiar item upon her death as well that my mom found in our homestead up in northern sweden.. its a brosch, old as all hel but the thing is that it has the map of Scandinavia on it, and i mean ye olden times map, and you can tell that it is that manually mapped ''chart'' of the lands that the first mappers did, it's really cool but ill update this when i know more, moms obsessed with that stuff xD scared of taking it to a proffessional museum tho, theyd probably take it :P Cheers to ye all :D
No, viking society wasn't unbelievably equal. There were strict gender roles. And the idea of "shield maidens" is largely a myth. Clover, Carol J. "Maiden Warriors and Other Sons," Journal of English and Germanic Philology, 85 (1986):35-49. "The only case in which a woman was allowed to take up arms was if (1) she was never married, (2) she had no living male relatives in the degrees listed in Baugatal who would have received weregild for the death of a family member, and (3) a crime had been perpetrated against her family that required vengeance by the social code of the day, often the murder of her last male relative. This role was temporary, but for its duration conferred the social role on the warrior woman as "son"."

Hi Skallagrim. Thank you for this awesome show! You are definitely right to state Normans were not vikings at all. As a matter of fact: - the 70 meters Bayeux Tapestry, which was ordered by William’s wife - some say his half brother Odo -, has a lot of text at its top explaining William’s invasion of England and the battle of Hastings; it reads that William was the dux of Normandy, not the jarl of the Normans, and that it was FRANCI vs ANGLI, which means clearly they considered themselves as Franks. - Due to almost 200y of presence in Franci (from 841) Normans had a lot more Frankish blood than Northmen’s, eg William had 1/32 Northmen blood, 1/32 Brittanish blood, 30/32 Frankish blood. - To the exception of boat construction and navigation words, their language, customs, culture, administrative organisation, architecture, military equipment and tactics (use of heavy cavalry) were Frankish, and that’s what they imported in England.

Two handed viking swords? I didnt even know people made those things!!
There aren't really two handed swords in the Vikings show. From what I've seen it's pretty much one handed.
I’ll just make a movie where everyone is a super stereotype.
Everyone is equal.
Mel Brooks already did it... Blazing Saddles and Robin Hood: Men In Tights.
Professor Mobius good luck with black people
There's American comedies that already stereotype blacks, it's made by the very people that it is stereotyping. I used to watch them when I was younger but I don't watch TV as much as I used to so idk if it stills air.

odly anime "vinland saga" comes the closest when it comes to vikings armor, weapons and clothes
And then there's straight up just a giant dude that slices 4 people in half with a single stroke of his apparently indestructable Axe.
Not because he hit them with the axe, mind you. He merely swung that thing. It was the SHARP, CUTTING AIR that sliced those men in half.
Truly an accurate depiction of viking-age warfare.
Also, berserker mushrooms are a thing. And there's a guy that is quite literally the legend of king arthur personified. Also naruto-running, also Thorkell being portrayed as a dumb, warhungry fighter when in reality he was just a really tall mercenary and nothing more.
@@RedFloyd469 Well he didn't say the story and characters were accurate, just weapons, armor, and clothes.

I think an important reason for the lack of Viking helmets and armour finds is also because they would generally pick targets that were vulnerable. Not to suggest that they were indestructible and they had no casualties, but I imagine they tended to be on the winning side against their chosen targets and would have the opportunity to recover equipment from any fallen fellow vikings.
Theory about re-using iron could be true, for example first Japanese to visit US in 1800s commented that there is a lot of iron vaste and that something like that is unimaginable in a feudal society like Japan
Skall I hope you do a review of Vinland Saga when it comes out, it's the most historically accurate manga I've seen so far
btw the farm arc is the most exciting arc of the manga so far
Yeap, no horned helmets and other silliness - Makoto Yukimura (the author) has done his research and is, obviously, quite the perfectionist.
(His older series, "Planetes" is a hard sci-fi that got an _amazing_ anime adaptation. Also zero-bullshit.)
Also by the trailers it's gonna be epic
What can you expect from an author that accept an award while cosplaying as an actual Viking lol
This summer an anime with viking thematic called VINLAND SAGA will be released. Could you do an analysis about how accurate it really is?
I know the comic and its damn good. Story wise and from the look (historical accurate depiction of things). There are some OP stuff in it regarding certain combat abilities of some characters but thats about it.
No need to watch the anime. It's got a manga with 162 chapters. And still publishing...
Freaking love it...
@@CollinMcLean well there's no need to ask anyone not to watch the anime either. The show's just started adapting the manga.

@UltimateGeek yes i mean thorfinn thanks for the correction... Still interested to watch the upcoming episodes of vinland saga...
Mount And Blade: Viking Conquest is the most accurate depiction of Vikings I’ve seen.
Intergalactic Human Empire no shit
1st game: YEAHHHHHH LETS RAID!!!!
2nd game 2 minutes later: “alright guys we have medical staff standing by. If they put up a fight, we cut bait and come back later.”
Yeah it's a damn good DLC, but I feel like it could've been better if they had more realistic character models and less gambesons.
A word as much abused as viking: ninja, samurai, cowboy, knight, barbarian, gladiator. 😂
I encourage you to watch a bit of the Vikings television show. Not because I think you'll enjoy it, but because I want you to mercilessly rake it over the coals.
I liked Bernard Cornwell's 'Last Kingdom' series for a reasonably accurate depiction of Anglos and Danish warriors. Show is ok as well.
I always hate how they depict Alfred and the Anglo-Saxons in media, they are always pathetic and useless scrubs while the Vikings are the superior machos. Quite frustrating that it happens everywhere.
And Vikings is quite enjoyable for the first 3 seasons, though sometimes you do roll your eyes at stupid stuff. After that it just became really bad, they had potential with the timeskip to improve costumes and settings but they completely failed.
@@valkorion8958 Finally someone else noticed the show went to shit!
The worse part is how lazy and half-assed they've gotten with their characters by season 5, damn thing was basically Game of Thrones lite. The writers had a few outs for a post Ragnar show, but instead they decided to focus on his damn kids and pulling things right out of their asses. Guess it was like the Great Heathen Army, had a large impact and eventually fell apart over time. Now I'm just waiting for Harald Hardrada to show up and end the show.
He would be too busy being impressed by Fimmel´s performance and ability to carry a show singlehandedly to shit on the show too much.
Thorsvald Fr. I love The Last Kingdom. Somehow find this historical fiction show more accurate than Vikings...which is on History channel. Then again, the history channel talks about Aliens now. The Last Kingdom is fantastic though imo. Only shows I really watch/watched were Game of Thrones and The Last Kingdom
The "splint armour" at 8:57 is now considered wrong and obsolete. The splints are now considered to be arm- and leg-armour. Source: "Krigarna från Valsgärde" by Kent Anderson (2017).

Skallagrim, Idk who made you feel bad for "talking too long" but speaking for myself and possibly other fans; we could listen to you talk all day. I have no complaints about longer videos.
I would love to see a Viking series review of the accuracy by this guy :0
The creator always makes it clear that he uses history as a blueprint, but that he’s a dramatist first, and many times what he does deters from history. I’m a big history buff, but when the creator of a series makes it clear from the get go he doesn’t necessarily try to be historically accurate, it’s like massive bodybuilders who do steroids and admit to it. They’re not fooling anyone, they’re not trying to sell it as something it’s not. It’s a great series, so, mission accomplished.
Alexander Angelus So a show on the history channel isn't trying to be historically accurate. Got it.
@@calculuswalulu7560 Just because it is based on history, it doesn't mean it's a documentary, dumbass. It would be cancelled after one season because of how boring it would be. History is a slow process and sometimes historical accuracy makes for disappointing TV. It's one thing to go through it as an overview (as in reading, or watching a documentary), in which you can cover decades within a few sentences, it's another going through it step by step.
Alexander Angelus So you're saying the HISTORY channel doesn't have to be HISTORICALLY accurate, Got it.
Wombo I blame that on the History channel and not on the shows on the channel. They really need a name change.

I'm glad i gre up in Sweden, we learn ALL this stuff in grade school and more! It's awesome to see the pride we take in that specific period.. Even remember that we had to learn the runic ''alphabet'' xD Made a runestone for my deceased grandfather in art class after that, rest in peace Arne :')
And I really do despise how foreigners just think of ''vikings'' or actually NORSEMEN as these macho big dudes in horned helmets etc.. And while yes the horned helmets thought at first to have been vikings but were in fact a whole other age also comes from the 16:th century kings and nobles of sweden who had extreme proudness of their history and just thought it'd be cool to portrait their ancestors with big horned helmets :) And yes, axes and spears were the most common ''tools/weapons'', and the spear was also used for hunting, mostly for boar which are hard to kill with bow and arrow xD
Also a common misconception of them were that they were dirty, unhygienic etc which is farther from the truth than you might think, seeing as there were findings of combs and other such things and also that they did in fact bathe more than the average european (in hot springs especially but also at winter, in the snow) which has to do with the most part of eu being christian and there was something in there about not bathing too much but cant quite remember what exactly
And a cool thing was that a Persian(I believe) missionary went to Scandinavia to record what life and the people here were like and he of course trashed everything and spread shite about the people here and that is also where a lot of misconceptions come from believe it or not!
the vikings would also use Charcoal etc to paint under their eyes and so on to look more terrifying when going to battle, who's to say makeup cant be badass xD
And also the norse culture was unbelievably more equal as to men/women in society than the christians, which to be honest isnt too difficult :D Even women could be warriors in norse society reffered to as sköldmöer or shield-maidens in English!
Also a cool fact is that asatro never really died out here in Scandinavia, even in the 1800-hundreds for example pople would say ''now loki has ridden through the fields'' when it was misty and poeple would be scared to go outside the farm, but a lot of post viking-era folklore is in fact from that belief, and a lot of records show that many still stayed true to the old beliefs, aaah could go on forever about all this
My grandmother and mother are also ''asatroende'' as we call it in sweden which i think is ''asatruar'' in English? Grew up with stories of the gods and also some of ''snorres'' sagas and such, another awesome thing that my mother has been researching foreeeever is our familys heritage which she was able to date all the way back to Fale bure who was one of the last ''norsemen'' or ''vikings'' if you will, also some rus blood from my mothers mothers side but almost 100% scandinavian
My grandmother left a peculiar item upon her death as well that my mom found in our homestead up in northern sweden.. its a brosch, old as all hel but the thing is that it has the map of Scandinavia on it, and i mean ye olden times map, and you can tell that it is that manually mapped ''chart'' of the lands that the first mappers did, it's really cool but ill update this when i know more, moms obsessed with that stuff xD scared of taking it to a proffessional museum tho, theyd probably take it :P Cheers to ye all :D
Cool! thanks dude, nice to know all of these.
@Bob el Silencioso Im sorry, but the viking raids started firstly because of charlemange.... kinda. When the holy roman empire reached the danish boarders the king of denmark didnt realy like the navy that charlemange built upp. So he launched the first raid.
After that both kings died there was no all out war but the raids went on cuz the danes realised it was good money in it. And later came the Danegeld ect.
But the raids did not start cuz scandinavia was a shit poor country on the edge of civilization.
One thing thou.... women usually didnt go to a viking so often.... one reason being that men get realy bored when they are stuck on a ship for some weeks. Besides, The women had more important things to do, like take care of the house or the fields. It was also always the woman who had the keys to the food storage and house..... That was what gave them some amount of power over men. Expescialy the granary bit.
I live in Utah. My high school mascot was the Vikings. We took that stuff seriously. We spent probably more time on the Vikings then we should have. But we went through all of that as well. We took it seriously haha. Which was really cool. We'd do the boat rowing and famous songs.
For whatever reason, it took hold of me and I'm learning Swedish now. Scandinavia is at the top of my list for places to visit.
Hi Skallagrim. Thank you for this awesome show!
You are definitely right to state Normans were not vikings at all.
As a matter of fact:
- the 70 meters Bayeux Tapestry, which was ordered by William’s wife - some say his half brother Odo -, has a lot of text at its top explaining William’s invasion of England and the battle of Hastings; it reads that William was the dux of Normandy, not the jarl of the Normans, and that it was FRANCI vs ANGLI, which means clearly they considered themselves as Franks.

10:00, My immediate thought was some sort of fluffy wool or sheepskin (with wool still on the hide).
Really reminds me of how one typically depicts the fluffiness of sheep, and I'd wager sheep were common livestock.
Wool would also be quite warm, is naturally fire retardant, AND it maintains its warmth even when soaking wet, a perfect material for braving the chilling spray of the Arctic waters as your boat cuts through the waves.
