From Volgarr the Viking to Expeditions Viking, Mount & Blade, and the TV show Vikings, the Norsemen have been portrayed countless times in media... The way they are presented often has little to nothing to do with actual history. So let's take a peek at what they actually looked like.

Kung Fury is a masterpiece.
I just imagined an archaeologists entering a kitchen for the first time and say: "ah yes, this place is for rituals".
To be fair, if they had just found the building and the people paying them just showed up to ask what they'd found, they'd rather say "Well this depression here was probably a fire pit, so this was probably a place for ritual sacrifice!" so that the bankrollers ooh and ahh, then once they're gone they'd figure out what it actually was, and say "So new evidence has turned out that this was in fact a kitchen."
My favourite archaeology lecturer at college had a poster on his office door entitled 'mysteries of archaeology' the top was a picture of a single shard or pottery, underneath was the 'archaeologist's reconstruction' and he'd drawn camelot.

Hi Skallagrim. Thank you for this awesome show!
You are definitely right to state Normans were not vikings at all.
As a matter of fact:
- the 70 meters Bayeux Tapestry, which was ordered by William’s wife - some say his half brother Odo -, has a lot of text at its top explaining William’s invasion of England and the battle of Hastings; it reads that William was the dux of Normandy, not the jarl of the Normans, and that it was FRANCI vs ANGLI, which means clearly they considered themselves as Franks.
- Due to almost 200y of presence in Franci (from 841) Normans had a lot more Frankish blood than Northmen’s, eg William had 1/32 Northmen blood, 1/32 Brittanish blood, 30/32 Frankish blood.
- To the exception of boat construction and navigation words, their language, customs, culture, administrative organisation, architecture, military equipment and tactics (use of heavy cavalry) were Frankish, and that’s what they imported in England.

There was a Knight that was famous for it. He used to throw any mace handed to him straight through any opening . I think his name was Mace Window.
The same thing happens to Ninja and Samurai.. But thats how fantasy often works, doing it 100% realistic would be boring. Growing up was always fascinated with Norse mythology, and my history teacher from Denmark, helped me out tremendously, with a little comic I did, which was so cool.
The comic I am now reworking, and doing designs for the game, is supposed take place in the year 3587 Earth.. With other planets discovered. Main character, is a child soldier, who develops an alter ego, to deal with some of the crazy issues he goes through. So he believes himself to be one of Thor's sons, but has to go through trials on Earth lol.
10:00, My immediate thought was some sort of fluffy wool or sheepskin (with wool still on the hide).
Really reminds me of how one typically depicts the fluffiness of sheep, and I'd wager sheep were common livestock.
Wool would also be quite warm, is naturally fire retardant, AND it maintains its warmth even when soaking wet, a perfect material for braving the chilling spray of the Arctic waters as your boat cuts through the waves.
We all know that real vikings were shirtless beasts that had a gigantic dane axe
Bruh. 😂
That also had horns on their helmets and were filthy and unclean and all had beards
And dont forget that every single norseman was a viking and that they hated farming

Thank you for this, I am a historian who had gotten into arguments about this topic by people who watch the show "Vikings" and believe they know more by watching a show then those that have done proper research.
I love the show, but I'll never get the modernized look they gave to some of the characters. it does not seem at all the kind of haircut I'd use in a pretty much frozen country all year round.
@@jayzak2271 It is very funny, I wasn't talking about the entertainment of the show. It was about people who run on about knowing facts AFTER waiting the show. I might come off as smug however you come off poorly educated, not understanding tense and jumping to cursing are taletale signs. Cheers

How do people not realise that if it's on tv or in movies it's not going to be accurate? How do you control your anger? Breathing techniques? meditation?
Have you ever seen "Vikingane" from Norway? I think the English translation is "Norsemen." It's a brilliant Norwegian comedy, and I think, a little more accurate than most of the "serious" television programs out there.

THANK YOU!!!!!!!!
That was part of the point in the raids in the first place. Not just adventuring, and pillaging, but finding new and better places to live. They werent as successful as I'm sure theyd hoped, but if they were glad to get out of Scandinavia for whatever reason, that's a success.
@@fireeaglefitnessmartialart935 Not the entire truth, they travelved for all sorts of reasons.. not in the least riches to come back to Sweden etc... we have a lot of runestones for the dead who traveled and died overseas.. or for treasures.
@@fireeaglefitnessmartialart935 yup and that's why they were offered settlements in england too (the king thinking they would not raid on their own people). Like in the tv show. And that's why they went to iceland Groenland and america. Some (not all as you said) of the vikings were settlers and just wanted to do quiet farming in a quiet place.
Some people think that the raids started because some of the people were starving, so it was raid or death. Vikings at first were just ... farmers. And that is why their simple (not for war) clothes are so accurate. They were pirates and thiefs, basicaly. Their fist raid was against non violent people ... lol that was safe. Hit hard (mostly on pacific and almost empty coast villages), loot all (mostly the church), rape a bit, and then run. How romantic is that ?
The romantic postmodern vision of vikings is so laughable. They wanted easy loot that's all. Like any man would want. Thiefs still exist in today's world. Vikings were sea thiefs, looting on earth not in open sea. The only difference with pirates. Some were pros, some were not (only poor people that only wanted to live and become rich to be abble to settle somewhere).

Yeah, it has been distorted by stereotypical depictions of all sorts. It's why I can *never* sit through an old Western. Dances with Wolves was pretty dang accurate, though. Both the novel and the movie.

The fact that Skallagrim skipped the DLC for Mount&Blade Warband made me a bit sad…
Yeah, Viking Conquest has, I’m gonna say it, the most accurate depictions of Vikings in any video game, period. Hell, I can’t think of any piece of media in general that does it better. Not even the movie The Northman does it as well.
All Vikings looked more or less like Marvel cinematic version of Thor, and had horns in their helmets, had enchanted tattoos and magical tools to give one man the power of a small army unit and durability of a rock and infinite stamina and wild wolves instantly became their pets just by establishing an eye contact and were ready to run through ice and fire and travel on boat to follow their master.

Vikings is a great show, you're right it's not historically accurate in presentation. I will say the events are pretty spot on. But it's 100% a fantasised version of real history.
I always associated the word “Viking” with the English word “raiders.” I don’t see it as the entirety of Norse history. I could be wrong, but didn’t the Viking era start because of loss of lands and oppression from outside countries.

I find it funny when you look at depictions of Anglo-Saxon warriors and vikings side by side, they are almost identical. Makes sense honestly. It’s not to different from how so many different military units in different countries today use multicam. So it’s not to hard to accept that they really wouldn’t have stood out much from the rest of the countries around them, visually speaking. ps this was a drawn out comment, sorry 😂
To me, raiding means running in and grabbing stuff before organized resistance can react. I would not be expecting much resistance, I would want to run, I might be in the water, and I do not want to get tired. I think sword and shield would be enough.
when i saw the title i was like "who thinks movie and video game vikings are real?"
