  • When I asked my Instagram followers to help me out with some questions, you can through with some real crackers. So in this live session I'm going to group a bunch of them together that concerned flash for portraits, filters and fast glass in the studio.
    Starting with a question about correct camera settings for flash, which sounds simple enough but in reality can be very confusing, I'll move on to getting your flash exposure right, high speed sync flash and how to work without it.
    As always I'll be working in my small home studio and the amazing Poly (the polystyrene head on a stick) will be my subject.
    Join in the conversation and ask you flash related questions on this live portrait lighting demo.

    Great questions and answers about flash and it turns out at the end, all you need are bright video lights 😆

    Hi Gavin, I would love if you did a video showing how to use the Multi setting on the flash units. It would be interesting to see what you create.

    Timestamp 20:16 another good reason for using F3.5 lens as opposed to F1.2 in a small studio unless you have put a special carpet on floor to decrease de-accelaration. I hope your ladies were standing be with the defibrillator.

    😱 Yikes! when your camera hit the floor! Oh dear, glad it and the lens survived. Great show. Looking forward to the next one.

    You are hands down my favorite person to watch when it comes to anything photography and how to do things. I do have a question i seen that the studio lights don’t fire when in electronic shutter mode. I was wondering if that is the case why do some cameras have a flash sync speed for that mode?
    For example my Canon R6 II has a 1/200 sync for mechanical and a 1/250 sync for electronic. Is the electronic sync only for on camera flash and not off camera studio?
    I just normally do landscape but looking to get into studio. I have the flashpoint 600 PRO TTL, eVolve 200 Pro, and R2 Pro Mark II transmitter on order. So looking forward to more of your videos.
    Thanks

    I've noticed that faster lenses tend to have better / more consistent AF performance (especially in lower light), no matter what aperture im shooting at. I would add that ND and Polarizer filters are the only filters that have effects that can't be digitally added.

    You go to the camera's native ISO (eyeso - when you say I Ass Oh you know you're doing it wrong - it's a word, not an acronym) of ISO 200. That's fine, but it would ne nice to see how your camera deals with ISO. Many contemporary mirrorless cameras dropped continuous ISO at the sensor level and replaced it by "two amplification levels" where the ISO value becomes metadata that informs how to open a file (like WB that doesn't impact the raw data, actually).
    If your camera does two amplification levels (in the analogue part of the sensor) then it may switch to the higher amplification e.g. at ISO 790 and this might mean that at ISO 800 you have comparable noise levels as at native ISO. In my full frame camera ISO 100 and 400 have similar noise levels.
    The noise level we see in post by the way largely depends on how well raw processing works.
    Most noise is plain Bayer noise where the raw processing was inadequate.

    If only have a speedlight what size softbox ?

    • @GavinHoey
      @GavinHoey  5 місяців тому

      Size of flash doesn't affect the size of the softbox but it does affect the light output. So any size might be OK depending on how far it will be from your subject and the exposure you can live with.

    Hi From Brum, funny just watching and the first question is what i was thinking this mornig to ask at teh photography club, - Why do you need a fast, expensive lens if shooting at f5.6 or f8 - Thanks for the answer YOU DONT spend your money on a something else - great advice.
    I have a question for next time - why do cameras only work the flash in Mechanical mode and NOT electronic?

    Ah, here’s a question for someone smarter than me - if I step up the ISO, won’t I have to step down the aperture by the same number of stops to eliminate the ambient light and obtain a black frame? And if I do this, my flash power will have to remain the same. What am I missing?

    • @GavinHoey
      @GavinHoey  5 місяців тому +1

      Yes ISO and Aperture both control the ambient light (and flash light) that's captured. Think of them as a set of scales, smaller aperture on one side is balanced by a higher ISO on the other. Flash power isn't affected if the balance is maintained, just as you suggested.

    I've just tried clamshell lighting but I'm getting shiny foreheads, my soft box is fairly small, is there a way of getting rid of the shine?

    • @GavinHoey
      @GavinHoey  5 місяців тому +1

      Specular highlights can be an issue caused by several effects. Bigger light might be a solution as is asking your subject to use matte mak-up

    • @Zeebad_1st
      @Zeebad_1st 5 місяців тому

      @@GavinHoey I'm going to try either a bounce brolly or maybe put another layer on the softbox, unfortunately I only have my daughter to use as a guinea pig and won't sit still long enough.

  • @jpdj2715

    You're not using "wider angle lenses" because micro4/3rd, but shorter focal length. Because the image diagonal is smaller you need a smaller focal length to get the same image angle as "full frame". When you want to shoot large format 8"*10" with its "nifty-fifty" variant you need a 350mm but on the micro4/3rds that would be a 25mm lens.
    You know all that but when you are teaching, words matter.

    As an FYI, you can get great results with the Sekonic 858 as it will measure HSS, and if you decide to use an ND filter, you can program the meter to make the calculations with the ND filter. No need to chimp your way along. I have no financial relationship to Sekonic. They have a unit that has a Godox transmitter so you can adjust all Godox lights on the fly.
