Great video Gavin as always and apologies I am more than a little late to comments but other than that great video and not just that I look forward to watching you because you make me smile and laugh and it brightness my day
Thanks for the comment and watching the catch up Kirsty. Photography should be fun IMHO, so smiling and laughing are all important part of my process 😁
Hello again from A Coruña (Galicia, Northwestern Spain) There is a new acronym which is gaining more and more recognition: NFNP (No Flash No Picture) 🙃
Yes. Always M mode for studio flash for me. I set the ISO, aperture and shutter speed. The flash works out how much light to output to match my settings.
Yes, if you use the Sekonic 858D with the Godox/Flashpoint transmitter module you set it to the same channel as your flash. The transmitter is also set to the same channel as the flash and I use the transmitter to adjust the flash power in each group. The camera is really just a passenger and not involved with flash power or groups / channels.
with Canon EOS R5, I have not been able to get HSS to work with TTL with the Xplor 400 TTL. This has been big disappointment for me, as I intended to use this for outdoor work. I bought a small Profoto flash, and it does work with TTL in HSS mode.
I thought the first picture of Chloe when you switched to manual was well exposed(phone screen) but could have used some fill to take out some of the depth of shadow.
True but then the Sekonic 858 becomes your flash control and not the transmitter. With the way I work that often leads to a miss match of settings and seemingly random light changes.
@@GavinHoey Once I got used to how the meter changed settings on the lights immediately, I had no issues. I am impressed that I can even turn on the modeling light or HSS by simply choosing that mode. I keep my trigger in APP mode on top of the camera. I usually use a pocket wizard III Plus cabled into my D850, and that works well. Just another tool. I love your approach with the 308 as well. I would have saved a bunch of money if I had watched your videos before I ever got into flash.
Hi Mark. The no flash = no picture only applies to the exposure of the images, not the EVF. I use optical simulation mode (name varies across brands) with gives me a bright viewfinder and the AF has no issues 👍
Always learn something from Gavin. Awesome instructor.
Thanks Joseph 👍
Love watching your tutorials. Keep up the great work
You make me more comfortable with my own goofy and candid personality!

When you were shooting in TTL mode, what did you have the camera set at? M?

Hello from Minnesota.
What is the light meter that you are using? Didn’t see it in the description below?
That is the Sekonic 858D light meter 👍
On the 858, you can dynamically change the power level without triggering

Gaven, I thought you would be useing the new Godox X3 or Nano.
I don't have one for my OM camera and although the Canon version I do have will work on an OM/Olympus it won't do dedicated functions like HSS or TTL.
@@GavinHoey ohh, you think Godox would support OM, seeing you can use all the other Godox triggers for OM. 🤔

How does the camera focus when you have no flash no picture? Don't you need some light for the camera to focus ?

Which flash setting are you using in your camera?
I'm using the default flash setting which I think is just "on" 👍
Hi fan noise must be because you are so popular😅
