If you’re looking to experience the longest and most grueling 60 seconds of your life, planking is a sure fire way to do so. You will sweat, shake, and often collapse in relief when it’s over.
This exercise is quite popular due to its versatility, numerous modifications, and relative effectiveness at engaging many of your core muscles. But that being said, its is not safe from criticism.
If you’re looking to build core strength, planking alone will only get you so far. Not to mention that there are many who don’t plank correctly; which can lead to regression instead of progression.
In this video I am going to explain why planking is somewhat overrated and demonstrate 3 substitute exercises that are more geared towards functional, sustainable core strengthening from a scientific perspective.

I have a recurring big toe injury that is upending my workout, which includes mostly squats, planks and pushups. I switched my pushups to knee pushups, which surprisingly are not much easier than regular. I’ll give these a try to replace the planks.

Consider: single leg planks do something awful to your quads, highly recommend trying a minute or two each leg
It is an overrated movement, but only because people don't inform themselves enough and don't care enough to do proper form and/or progressions.
The hollow body hold is the direct rival of the long lever plank. So, inform yourselves, people!
