  • HBO Max has just released a reimagined spinoff of the popular, long-running kids show “Scooby-Doo.” Despite the association with the Hanna-Barbera original, it’s being marketed as “adult” and features limbs being severed, one of the main characters going to a strip club with her dad, and two teenage boys making out at their high school.

If you paid attention to what fred does, he usually either pairs velma or Daphine off with eachotger or himself, and sometimes both with himself, not because her and fred were a thing but because he knew if they were in trouble either himself or Velma would get them out of trouble. Fred is just trying to make sure the girls are safe because shaggy and scooby would just run, there's no need to worry about them. Fred was always characterized as protective of his friends and brave. There's reason he doesn't have have a catchphrase; all of them are exclaimations of fear and Fred doesn't have one because Fred fears nothing.
As to why Mindy took away all of his characterization is beyond me. Of the stupid things you could do to a character this one takes the cake.

he is very capable when planning, fighting, and, of course, building traps. but he can be pretty clueless at other times.
and he has style!! he’s handsome and stylish and loves his signature ascot.
loving, strong, handsome, and a little dumb. arguably his most consistent character traits. and the complete disregard of this is why velma’s depiction of fred sucks. they cranked up the “stupid” dial to 11, kept his looks, and disregarded EVERYTHING ELSE. that’s not a himbo. that’s an asshole.

One of the best things about mysteries S.A was the characterization of the characters. Fred could be somewhat immature and have a cartoonish obsession with cheating but he made it clear that he was a good leader, an ingenious problem solver and a mature person when the situation called for it. Velma's fred is not even a character, it's a bad joke worse told.
