- Sometimes you just need a good ol' action platform game to unwind. Mostly these were stuck in 16-bit console land, but not Jill! One of the earlier games with a female action protagonist, Jill is not to be missed.
Jill of the Jungle Trilogy for MS-DOS PCs
Also includes a little info on "Jill-inspired" games, like Onesimus, Xargon and Vinyl Goddess From Mars. - Розваги
Prince: "Jill, will you marry me?"
Jill:"Okay"
Best ending ever
The Silent Player
Jill is an ancestor of Forrest Gump.
Geez, man, spoilers!
It's always such a trip seeing LGR's old intros and younger voice.
If you don't know. This game is now available on GOG and is free forever yesterday.
Good tip. Just got it.
just applied the patch to it and started playing it on my Pentium 133 PC.
Thank you so much! I loved this game so much as a kid! It was one of the first games I ever played and it was so fun. The animation of Jill really impressed me at the time. Now I'll play the whole thing! Thank you!
Just got it :-)
I identify as Jill of the Jungle
From 'Shareware' to 'No Sharing, It's Ours and Ours Alone!' Oh Epic...
Weird how things changed after 30 years.
Like any proper capitalistic business? Monopoly and total economic domination is the end goal of true Capitalism.
@@diamondhamster4320 Spoken like an idiot communist who doesn't understand anything about capitalism
I didn't have an NES growing up, so this game along with Commander Keen, Cosmo's Cosmic Adventure and Vinyl Goddess from Mars was my Super Mario Bros.
Ditto, honestly we were lucky
Cosmo’s Cosmic Adventure... Man that game was fun! It was one of the few computer games I had but tended to play constantly!
I loved those games, they made my childhood 😭
Como's Cosmic Adventure hasn't aged well, but felt so good at the time
"Jill, will you marry me?" "Okay"
I always like that at the end. She just shrugged her shoulders and said, “Meh, don’t see why not.” Not really certain if marriage is a concept that exists in the jungle.
***** "Yeah, sure, why not. Not like this is some big decision that will impact my life for years after I make it or anything."
I think that response makes some sense. She seems to be pretty solitary and probably doesn't have any legal status, so if she doesn't like the prince she can just leave, the only possible repercussion would be the prince trying to force her to come back, except in this universe the food chain goes [JILL] > [THE GUYS WHO KIDNAPPED THE PRINCE] > [THE PRINCE], I don't think that plan would work out well for him.
Heck yeah love that game, along with its predecessor of sorts, Crystal Caves.
So do I dude. So do I.
Thank you so much for this video. Xargon has always been one of my favourite childhood games, and I'd completely forgotten about Jill of the Jungle. I can't wait to play it again.
I'd also never heard of that Vinyl Goddess From Mars game, but upon trying it, it's already amazing in the first level. I know what I'm doing today, and it's all thanks to you!
Piece of Pie Software Haha, awesome! Vinyl really is a lot of fun, all the way through.
Jill of the Jungle was perhaps the greatest platformer I ever played on PC. Loved this game!
Checking out your channel, I just can't stop nerd-gasming from all the nostalgia and game reviews of the stuff I used to play as a kid. The DOS era was incredible (and Jill of the Jungle in particular was one of the great ones). Thanks for helping me relive the memories! :)
Thanks for this review. You refreshed my memory on everything about it. I used to love this game as a kid. I played that Xargon game too. And Epic Pinball. Vinyl Goddess from Mars sounds fun. I'm gonna watch your review for that now.
Clint, I love you man. I've been trying to the name of this game ever since our MS-DOS PC crapped out in '96. Now I finally remember. Thanks, dude!
loved that game as a kid 😃
6:42 This is my lost childhood game and you just casually mentioned it!! Thank you for making me remember its name! I'm going to play it nonstop
I remember that there was something of a bug of sorts in jill of the jungle where you can throw your knives in a certain way and you could duplicate it. I'm not entirely sure how it works but I used to do this a lot when playing.
This game is a core childhood memory of mine.
Xargon? HOLY MOLY! I haven't seen this game for like 20 years, thanks for nostalgia!
OH WOW! I used to love this game!! So glad I stumbled across it on your channel as it brought back so many memories. Love your channel. Great stuff :)
Great review man, thank you for your time doing this
Amazing video. I was searching for this because the ms-dos game "Gods". Reminds me to some kind of mix between Electroman, Jill and Xargon.
@shaurz BoC owns.
And yes, so it's not just me. I tried to explain how the jumping feels, saying "too tight or predictable"... I'm not sure how to express it, but it's certainly different than most anything else (other than Xargon of course). Really takes some getting used to.
Great archive dude. Thanks for the review. I played it in its age and it was a great game, just like Jazz JackRabbit, Commander Keen saga and Duke Nukem (Duke Nukum I think it was) great games!
I remember taking 2 hours to play through the first episode every time, because back then I had a 1 hour limit to play daily. You sir got a new subscriber!
@AthensSword Thanks, and no worries - I've no plans of stopping anytime soon!
Eyyy I have the same Boards of Canada shirt. Didn't expect LGR to have good taste in music
I had never heard of jill of the jungle until today. And probably wouldn't have given it a second thought. Till you covered it. Thank you.....p.s. my dog loves you.
Jill answers: "Okay." straightforward as ever
I only played this a couple of years ago, but it's one of my favourite 2D platform games ever. I love the humor, simplicity and the sound effect when you pick up a key. The soundtrack is also really fantastic, all except for that bonus theme music which I can't stand. :V It can be beat in about 15 minutes but I also like that, it feels like you're always making progress and is fun to keep playing through from start to finish again and again. :] I'm not a huge fan of Jill 2, the levels feel much larger and it lacks that sense of constant progression the first games has.
@shorty1k Yup, I got quite lucky with finding Jill boxed! I've been looking for a boxed version of Vinyl for a long time myself. Never have found one, only the one Gamewurx boxed compilation with Vinyl on the CD.
This was the first video game I ever played at the ripe old age of 4 or 5 on the computers at my home town's library. The sounds in this game are what I remember most but I still have clear recollection of the platforming action. Fantastic.
Great review you're becoming one of my favourite UA-cam reviewers
I had completely forgotten about this gem of a game. I really loved it back in the day. Ah the memories..
this + jazz jackrabbit were my first games ever! I was like 5 or 6. Good old days
I loved this video, thank you for sharing this!
Awesome! These games were fantastic back in the day. I also reviewed Jazz Jackrabbit and one of the Holiday Hare editions if you're curious.
Stop reviewing yourself. That's weird.
I don't know why I keep watching these videos. I like 'em, but there's something special about your videos...
wow, i was really expecting for you to trash this game. I played it when i was young but since Xargon, Comander keen and the snes were all already out i just saw jill of the jungle as the inferioir, you don't preserve your momentum as you jump and the graphics are really obviously a grid, with not even slopes or different tiles to connect the grass to the ground or do a ledge realistically.
But no, i was wrong, you like it and i can respect that, this is the first time in my life i feel like i'm the young one, and that i'm very used to modern conventions so its hard for me to appreciate this. i always like seeing someone appreciating something that i don't like and explaning to me why its awesome
And yeah, now i see, jill of the jungle is awesome
great video
You know how to make me feel old! Thank you so much! This was one of the first games my father let me play on his 486 PC.
How about a review on the Gobliins series? Those wre great games! (Except maybe for the 3D sequel ^^)
Hey, LGR. Thanks for the recommendation. I downloaded this from GOG the other day,
Yesss, Xargon! I knew there was something familiar about Jill and Vinyl. Remember playing it as a kid :D
@Ruinah That is awesome! Any chance of pix/scans of the poster?
Great review! I've always heard of this game, but never really knew what it was all about.. haha
She resembles Samus Aran
I still remember booting my grandpa's comp into MS-DOS mode to launch this game I played it so much
One of the first PC games I ever played... (along side epic pinball). I remembered it being fun to play, but revisiting it again recently, I can say that it definately still holds up to this day.
Its a testament to what PC games could do at that time. When you think about it, Mario 3 had been released just a year earlier than Jill 1 so it was still very much the NES era of gaming... good stuff.
This Dos Game was my childhood. Thanks for review man.
I was so happy when I found this game on an old pc I found at the reject shop
I am so infinitely happy that you reviewed this game
Omg I love you boards of canada shirt! I've never met anyone else who knows them. Also, I loved Jill as a kid.
@crystyxn There's no telling, it really depends on who notices it and who is selling it. I got my Jazz CD for a few dollars on ebay, I've seen it go for upwards of $40. JJ2 is usually less than $10 for just the CD, much more for the box.
Very nice, glad to see a mention of the Jill table from Epic Pinball!
This was some nostalgia for me. I played this and so many other shareware games on my first PC.
Good lord is the sound good on this game. I played this a lot as a kid but our computer sound card must have been crappy because it sounded so much worse. Nice to hear the real deal.
Excelent production, content and review
Excellent video !!!
I remember playing this game at my aunts when i was a child. Had no idea it was so famous. To a 10 year old kid who loved computer games it was a surreal experience. Time to find a copy and play it again :)
Heh, true, though I mentioned it in my Jazz review :) And thanks!
@gav1230 As far as PC platform games go, it's incredible. But compared to some of the high-end console games, your Sonics and Marios, it's hard to compete. The earlier Keen games anyways, I-III (and Dreams to a degree).
Have you played the later games, IV through VI? Those were where it really perfected it, and honestly I still prefer those over any console platform game.
Game is free on GOG so you dont have any reason to skip this masterpiece.
I love this game! I used to play this for ages!
Fantastic review!
I could watch Jill climbing vines all day long.
Everytime i read the title I always think it says "Jilling in the jungle" (jilling is like the girly version of jacking off)
@@arthas640 the fuck......
Lol john. Best comment :p
@Lachlant1984 It runs, just not very quickly. It really needs a higher-end 286 or low-end 386 at least.
I agree, I'd KILL to have these on Wii VC, XBLA, PSN etc
Jill is pretty deadly, she has insane proficiency with all kinds of weapons, and she can turn into all kinds of creatures including a flying fire being that engulfs its enemies in flames, and she's in phenomenal physical condition.
Played this game way back in the day on a CGA computer. Loved it even in CGA.
"Jill, Will You Marry Me?"
"Okay."
I'm so happy you did this game it was the very first game i ever won at!!!
One of my favorite DOS games!
This was one of those games I played over, and over, and over, and over...
The biggest thing I remember about it is that it nearly blew out my eardrums every time I played it. Damn, was this game loud.
This game was amazing.
I first heard about this game when a university lecturer told me about Jill of the Jungle after he saw my Jungle Lydia flash game back in 2010.
I was really impressed it was one of Epic's earlier games, because I knew of Epic's Robot Fighter game called One Must Fall and I think that game too was part of the Shareware games for DOS and early Windows 95 computers if you know how to activate it through Windows DOS mode.
My God how I loved this game. I'd still play it if my pentium 2 still worked.
This game reminds me of ''Xargon'' I use to love that game!
Just watched a video walk-through of this game the other day. Such a classic. I even still have the poster for it that came with my registered version of ZZT. :D
The noisemaker in this game + wobble bass + a little bit of melody = Skrillex :p
I really love this game, it's awesome, even Xargon, it's successor
This was the first game ever I was able to finish as a child somehow
Oh ok. So maybe I actually downloaded a rom of the retail version. Thanks for responding and for all your awesome reviews! :)
I remember playing this for years on my IBM PC II with PC-Speaker sounds :) great times
Weird thing is I just raked this game out yesterday after forgetting about it somewhat. A great game and a very good review.
evil death laugh might be one of my all time favourite sound effects
Wow just watching this is interesting cuz I'm so used to your deeper radio voice
You forgot the Cameo of Jill in Jazz Jackrabbit, nice video ;)
I was five playing this on my moms laptop way back in the day had to look it up on the tubes haha still a pc gamer after all this time
Me too! Or, at least, really close! What I love about Jill of the Jungle is that they gave you infinite lives. They were ahead of their time on that, as now pretty much every game does it (or, like Mario, they give you so many 1-ups that you might as well have infinite lives.)
Good Lord! I had no idea so many games came from the Jill Engine. Cannot wait to play Xargon and Vinyl.
Great Review again. Can remember this game quite well. I was just wondering, since you seem to like those old maxis sim-games, if you could make a simcopter review? That would be great! :)
Man, talk about weird. I had remembered playing Onesimus a lot as a kid, and I came ehre because I had heard it was a mod of Jill of the Jungle. What I didn't expect was to be reminded of Xargon, I had 100% forgotten that game.
@c82over
strangely enough, i also played this game on my aunts computer when i was a kid. Never had it myself. I remember spending whole day playing and finally beating the game. It was a great satisfaction.
I remember playing the hell out of episode 1 then scoring episode 2 at Kmart for $4 when I was a kid. Great games for a 486 computer back in the olden days
@kmment Yeah, I remember when my school upgraded from 286 to 386 in the electronics shop. We were amazed at how great they were.
That BoC shirt is amazing!
holy crap i remember this game so vividly.
Boards of Canada
I can't remember why I wrote this, but 4 likes must mean that there is some connection to the video. Can anyone enlighten me?
Check out Clints shirt.
The boards of canada shirt must make a comeback!
great review, great game!
I used to play this in the computer lab at school.
:'D I've played this game so much back in the day. Also SAM , Alley cat and road rash.
Ah I can remember this game back then some of my PC friends where thinking
that they could dish up on me, But I was a Amiga kid back then
And we had TURRICAN 2 BI8ATCH HARHARHARHARHAR !!!!!
Indeed, The music was GREAT (with a few exceptions)
Jill of the jungle came on a shareware cd I got in the 80s, my kids positively got hooked on the game, to this day when I mention JOTJ they go AWWWW..lol. They also liked playing Hocus Pocus also on that cd.
