Crankbait Design, Fine Tuning

  • Making crankbaits can be a hit-or-miss endeavor. Unless you’re copying a lure you already know works well, designing your own crankbait can result in gems of junk. Any original handmade lure is a giant question mark right up to the point where you put in the water to test it. This is the first of a series of lure design videos that will give you some solid design criteria for crankbaits. I’ll be giving you simple rule-of-thumb techniques to fine tune your design so that its action is what you envision. I will share some simple lure testing techniques and show you the why and how of adjusting your lure for the right action. In this video I talk about using the tie eye placement to fine tune what I call the wobble and role aspects of the lure action. Visit the Engineered Angler Facebook page to see the latest in my lure designs and lure building techniques.

    What I'm looking for as a lure maker is a profound understanding of the forces at play. The kind of understanding that you seem to have. These tips are great, but ultimately won't lead to that level of understanding unless we talk about all of the underlying physics. My goal is to look at a lure (made by myself or on a store shelf) and know what kind of action it will have before testing it. To know what any alteration will do to it beforehand. I can make some predictions, but ultimately it's still a stab in the dark, which means a lot of failed lures and wasted time.

      You have perfectly captured the mission that drives me to spend dozens of hours making these videos. Your goal is a good one. I have a background in mechanical and aerospace engineering and in yacht hull design. I also spent years in materials research. And with all that I still get it wrong sometimes.I can't teach everyone to be an engineer but I can try to make what I know as accessible as possible.

    Excellent video on the finer points of crankbait design. I think another video on lip sizing would be a great tutorial. One might create a great bait, but have the wrong size or shape lip. A video on how to refine the lures lip size - I would gladly watch.
    In any case, keep up the good work!!!!

    Well I keep thinking and I keep asking for things I hope you don bother to answer... For all we do homemade lures, we usually passed threw huge disapointment regarding some of our creation and how they perform. A lot of them in my experience where because of weight distribution, tow point and lip angle. I would like some clues about internal weight distribution and how it affects your lure. Some basics in order to be able to make solid designs

    • @EngineeredAngler
      @EngineeredAngler  5 років тому

      Get out of my head 😅...I'm working on just that...it'll be a few weeks though. Let me thank you for being honest, every video of every hand made lure somehow shows a lure that performs perfectly. Meanwhile I'm engineering it to a knats ass and I still get the occasional flop. But I learn from each one, reverse-engineer the problem and move on.

    Lipless cranks have the tow eye on the very top of the dorsal side of the lure. They, in fact, remind me of blade baits. Are they counter balanced in the belly to keep them stable?

    I have a crankbait lure the dives around 3 meters or around 9ft. I would like for it not to dive more the 3 feet, preferably two feet. Would reducing the plastic lip help in reducing the dive depth?

    • @EngineeredAngler
      @EngineeredAngler  3 роки тому

      In general; reducing the length of the lip and setting it at a steeper angle of attack will get you a shallower dive.

    • @anonymousperson5952
      @anonymousperson5952 3 роки тому +1

      @@EngineeredAngler The angle of the lip of the crankbaits that I bought cannot be changed. Only the length can be changed by grinding it down. By grinding, at least it will have an effect the depth of dive. Thank you for your insight.

    One more thing, I would like to know how to make a lure to shimy on the fall. I still didnt tried to build one, but I was looking the design of some lures that do this. Its seem they have the weight well distributed on the belly and the lower part of the lure es square.

    • @EngineeredAngler

      I don't seal it before painting. If you're polishing the foil that might be the issue...polish residue. Try cleaning everything with denatured alcohol before pointing. Good luck

    How do you measure out your baits and know where to shave/carve down the sides when you are making a square bill crank bait?

    • @EngineeredAngler
      @EngineeredAngler  5 років тому

      Most of my Square Bill crankbaits are shaped on my mini lathe. It's really important to get a lure that is symmetric down the middle. The lathe is the most efficient way to do it. Check out this video

    And question for million dollars is, how to get the tight action and roll when we are making a lure. Cuz yo-zuri 3D crystall minnow clearly has it

      @EngineeredAngler  Рік тому

      The answer is in the video...

    • @i1bike
      @i1bike Рік тому

      @@EngineeredAngler
      you explained that putting nose down gives wider left to right movement and wider roll, while putting nose higher gives tight movement. But you did not explained how to get tight left to right movement and wider roll. Yo-zuri probably did it with long and slender shape. While, you claim that lure design shape doesnt matter much, hmmm maybe it does. DUO ryuki and realis are killers when compred to other lures with similar action. They will catch more, and its probably cuz of that tall and slender design. I think that shape enhances action. This is coming from a saltwater fisherman, maybe its different in fresh water due to lower density. But then again freshwater on lower temperatures is also quit dense, my sea never gets that cold. Make no mistske, i am not attacking you or trolling you, you probably just did not understand what i asked. Im very glad for your video, idk if there is any similar video on youtube. Im just a lure and fish "philosopher" like we all are sometimes haha

    This trick or physic law can be apply to lip less lures? I play a lot with the center of gravity and center of drag but I never thought about the position of the front screw eye..

    How can I calculate that sweet spot, taking in account the location of the weight, lip shape & body shape? I mean not a mathematical calculation, of course...

    • @EngineeredAngler
      @EngineeredAngler  5 років тому

      the best way is to do something like I did. You can put a series of connection points by cutting a thin slot and glueing in a thin sheet of plastic with small holes...its not as hard as it sounds. Be sure to use weights to simulate the hooks, not hooks.
