It was also Hungarian battles around Vienna in 862 and 881. Between 899 and 970, according to contemporary sources, the researchers count 47 (38 to West and 9 to East) raids in different parts of Europe. From these Hungarian campaigns only 8 were unsuccessful and the others ended with success. 3 reasons of the campaigns: 1 most of the time Hungarians were hired by western powers each other, and they allied always with the weaker party (of course the booty was the payment as everywhere by everybody in medieval times), 2 prevent the German unification after the Battle of Pressburg 907 when Germans invaded Hungary, 3 claim back the Avar treasures which was taken by the Franks. At Lechfeld (sources mention betrayal, as Grand Prince Taksony wanted remove his rivals) a small Hungarian army was defeated deep in German land, and Germans did not dare to attack Hungary since 907, the next German attack was only in 1030 and in 1051 with German defeats.

So that's how the Holy Roman Empire was created, Otto The Great really is the goat. Thanks for taking the time to make these videos, hands down the best youtuber
I love to dive into the thrilling saga of the early hungarians. This video brilliantly captures the fierce determination and strategic brilliance of the Magyars as they carve out a new destiny in Europe.
Following Great Bulgaria's collapse, the seven Magyar tribes became tributaries of the Khazars, from whom they acquired the tradition of dual political rulers: A sacred, figurehead chief (kende, or kündü) and a vice-chief (gyula), who was military commander and de facto leader. The gyula was seconded by an officer entitled horka (or karchas). The Magyars broke with the Khazars sometime in the early ninth cen- tury and established an independent tribal federation on the south- ern steppes north of the Sea of Azov, a region called Levadia by the Byzantines. They were joined by three breakaway Turkish Khazar tribes, the Kabars, who served as important military auxiliaries in the Magyars' main mounted force, always positioned in the forefront during combat because of their recognized warrior ethos. Beyond this fact, little is known about early Magyar military organization. One can assume that, like most other steppe peoples, they fielded light and medium cavalry composed of all able-bodied armed men from the federation's tribes, led by their tribal chiefs and formed into decimal-based sized units. These tribal units may have been structured along clan lines, with each under the authority of its respective clan leader. The gyula served as the over- all force commander and led an elite retinue, as did each of his tribal chiefs. At the time of their participation in the hegemonic wars, the total Magyar military may have numbered some 20,000 warriors. Sometime in the mid-ninth century the Magyars moved westward from Levadia to the steppe region lying between the Dnieper River and the mouth of the Danube that they called Etelköz (or Atalkuzu), encom- passing Bessarabia (m: Moldova). This action may have been forced on them by another steppe people pressing from the east-the Pechenegs. Pecheneg origins lay in the heart of Central Asia, east of the Aral Sea. At first a loose nomadic Turkic grouping, the Pechenegs were brought within a large tribal conglomerate governed by the Western Turks, who constituted half of a large Turkic empire stretching from Mongolia to the borders of Sassanid Persia by the early seventh century. In the 550s that vast empire broke into western and eastern halves, with the former controlling much of Central Asia and the latter holding Mongolia and a large portion of northern China. By the middle of the seventh century China destroyed the Eastern Turkic state while the western one dissolved into intertribal warfare.
Tribes have always had leaders, its not something magyars adapted from the khazars, who like western nations were very dependent on magyar military prowess. So dependent that their khagnate seized to exist shortly after the Hungarians left to reconquer the homeland. The khazars were defeated by a people the hungarians already had beaten, the kiev russ. The kabars followed the magyars because they knew what was best for them (saw where the khagnate was heading) and they sought refuge under the hungarians. There are theories claiming the Kabars to have been jewish, and broke with the Khazars after Judaism became the state religion in khazaria. The kabars broke and rebelled because the state didnt follow the jewish laws properly and were later expelled and sought refuge under magyars and also kiev russ. No nomadic tribe has conquered further west than the huns and the magyars,( because they couldnt). The Hungarian kingdom later assimilated or expelled kipchaks and cumans who tried to come into europe from the east.
About the Magyar war tactics and organization there is a very good contemporary work: Taktika written in 904 by the Byzantine Emperor Leo the Wise. Kabars were not in the forefront of the battles because they were more brave, but because joining as the last tribes the confederation, according to the nomadic tradition, their place was established as such. In all nomadic empires, the last tribes that joined the Empire, had to serve on the vanguard or rearguard.
The Holy Roman Empire may have standed for more than 800 years, but Hungary still stands today. :) BTW, the defeat at Lechfeld did not end the Hungarian raids, just diverted those to South-Europe. There the raids still continued for another 40 or so years, before the Hungarians finally settled and converted to Christianity.
Graves of Hungarian conquerors had Christian chest crosses, so many of them they already know Christianity. King Saint Stephen just adopted western style Christianity. Gyula of Transylvania, and Bulcsu was already baptized about 950 in Constantinople, he was the "guest friend of the emperor".
@@aliengalaxy6096 Sure, adopting roman catholicism was not a momentary, sudden event, it was a long process. And yes, many Hungarians adopted the orthodox catholicism as well. Still King Stephen had issues with pagans - or better to say, the old Hungarian shamanic religion.

I really like your type of explaining every battle with Details, tho i would be greatly appreciated if you considered a video about Perso-Roman wars if possible.
I’m excited to learn about this time period, since my interest has mostly been on the 1500s and onward in Europe. I’ll leave a comment here for the algorithm.
Since the magyars were such a dominant force in the heart of europe it always reminded me of the book of judges and joshua, how the Israelites with the power of God were able to conquer the promised land. And since the magyars had lived along side a Jewish state like the khazaria im sure they were familiar with the Tanakh and were inspired by the scriptures to do the same. And i believe they were therefore lesser pagan than what the author calls them which is why they won the majority of the battles and succeeded whith their goal. They later converted to christianity and were given the holy crown from the pope, made in constantinople which is an honor given more than any other nation in Europe had gained prior. And Hungary produced countless of heroes who fought for the nation and the christian europe and still do to this day.
Until the ottoman times, Hungary regularly kept german felt superiority at bay. Unfortunate for us, by the 16th century the ottoman had 8-9million gold income, whereas UK, France,HRE wasn combined. We didnt stand much chance.
Árpád was certainly the Kabar Prince Kurszán, and therefore Kurszán and his successors had the title of gyula, the second highest title in the tribal federation.
Excellent, detailed presentation. When we were taught about Magyar invasion, I thought that they had armies of 100,000 men. It was surprising to me to learn that they won battles and made successful raids with a few thousand horsemen. It was the ineptitude of the German and other (Great Moravian, Italian) leaders to learn quickly the Magyar war tactics and make appropriate adjustments. The other aspect, as in many other European history situations, was infighting instead of common action against an intruder (Mongol and especially later, Turk invasions). I have a question about Magyars economy - as a nomadic people where did they get resources for the production of weapons, armament and gears?

Hey! I wanted to let you know that I love this series, it is amazing and it is making for me the side of history I always hated in school (battles and dates) interesting. I especially love the visualisation of all the battles on the maps. However, I find that your maps are not always correct when it cames to towns and cities. I noticed this with the video about the battle of the Teutoburg Forrest as well. In this one, when you are talking about Luitpold marching towards Pannonia, Szombathely is shown just north of Pressburg and west of nitra. That place, in reality, is either Senec or Trnava. Szombathely is, in fact, south of Sopron on the other side of the Danube and is still called Szombathely today.
For sure! Except, that the Vikings were both from, and operated in, Europe 🤦🏻♂️ An analogy that might make some sense could be a reference to the Magyars as "terrestrial Vikings", or something about the Magyars being "Vikings that used steeds of flesh & bone, instead of oar & sail." But even those are pretty poor comparisons, given that Vikings spent the vast majority of their time on solid ground, and certainly were habitual riders (although they did not enter combat mounted).
@@OfficialUKGov The Vikings were essentially just your average white American football fan when they don’t get their way That’s why there’s a team named after them
It's pretty clear the degree of disconnect between Western Europe and Rome in this period. The complete unfamiliarity of East Francian and Italian military leaders with Horse archers demonstrates, for example, the they weren't familiar with Crassus' defeat at Carrhae, for example.
Graves of Hungarian conquerors had Christian chest crosses, so may of them they already know Christianity. King Saint Stephen just adopted western style Christianity. Bulcsu was already baptized about 950 in Constantinople.
I'm Hungarian. You need to understand the absolute ambivalent mentality of my people. This is a quick guide: 1. We were defeated by: The Holy Roman Empire (Otto), the Tatars, the Ottomans, the Habsburgs in the XVIII. and XIX. centuries, in WWI and in WWII; we were subjugated by the Ottomans, the Habsburgs, and the Soviets. This is not a complete list. So yeah, you might find it, that we are pretty depressed people. All the losses. All the suffering. And some of them are permament of course. But... 2. On the other hand, and this is a common secret among us: you foreign people do realise, that after all these defeats, we are still here, and still kicking? How dense of a people can be, if you cannot destroy them with the strongest empire of that particular era? You might defeat us, yes. Step in the line, have a cookie and enjoy your victory. We will outlive you, your grandchildren, your empire, and one day, you will find the very same people you thought killed, on the opposite side of the negotiating table. We Hungarians are dense. I am proud to be Hungarian. If another Hungarian starts to rant about how bad it is to be Hungarian novadays, please refer to section point 1. of my comment. Thank you. Have a nice day.
the difference between Hungary and all those countries is that they where Empires. where at one point they stretch too far to be governed properly and eventually they break up due to internal conflicts. the Holy Roman Empire where just a bunch of estates being held together. if Hungary had imperial ambitious and spread too far, they would cease to exist unless they ended up like the Mongols
It's still a mystery from where your original ancestors might have come from. Hungarians and Bulgarians are people of the Eurasian Steppe and even before that the tundra. From the Jurchens and Mongols to the East to the Huns, the Scythians, the Turks and the Alans. The Eurasian Steppe has created the most dreadful warriors.
Every major civilization from the Chinese and Indians to the Persians, the Romans and Frankish Europe weren't spared by these races. As an Indian we have also had many Scythian(Saka), Hunnic(Hunnic) and later Islamic Turkic invasions. Our emperors, the Guptas also learnt many tactics like horse archery from the Huns and were able to even defeat them.
@@arontakacs8869 I am well aware and agree with you. Europe became weigh stronger with the Hungarians included. Would be an interesting string of alternative history if the Magyars were not defeated at Lechfeld, stayed outside the european kingdoms and then the Ottomans appear.

Hungarians always joined the local conflicts and helped the weaker to make all of them weaker and to prevent any great central power to emerge in Europe that could threat Hungary. Since that every European great power does the same: prevent hegemony in Europe. It was not just looting it was political strategy.
Seems like the Magyar were kinda cowardly...just attack with arrows and run away. Then, attack at night when the enemy is sleeping. Smart, indeed, but hardly brave. It would be interesting to see how they would have held up against the Mongols. I know the Mongols wiped them out centuries later, but it would have been an interesting battle. Both have speedy, nimble horse archers, and both employed ambush tactics. Coin toss?

Seeing Vicenza on the map is always quite surreal living here.
woah this is a massive one
I really like your type of explaining every battle with Details, tho i would be greatly appreciated if you considered a video about Perso-Roman wars if possible.
Thank you for your work!
Great post, thank you
My account works again! Thanks For this ❤❤❤❤
thank you, the battles were told in a way that it was very exciting to watch and was hooked to see whats going to happen like in a movie lol
A surprise to be sure but a welcome one.
A comment for the algorithm.
Another amazing series and work....but my man you need to continue Hannibal
I’m excited to learn about this time period, since my interest has mostly been on the 1500s and onward in Europe.
I’ll leave a comment here for the algorithm.
Thanks For this ❤❤❤
Since the magyars were such a dominant force in the heart of europe it always reminded me of the book of judges and joshua, how the Israelites with the power of God were able to conquer the promised land.
Awesome to finally have a long video about the conquest of my ancestors
You are superb 😊
Thank you just thank you
Love the sound effects!
The narrator's voice is so soothing.
Can you please start a komnenian restoration series?
didnt know the hungarians bullied the germans like that.
Until the ottoman times, Hungary regularly kept german felt superiority at bay. Unfortunate for us, by the 16th century the ottoman had 8-9million gold income, whereas UK, France,HRE wasn combined. We didnt stand much chance.
@nicknem174
What are you talking about uk and france dawg
@@smal750 it was a comparison about how much was the ottomans' income dawg.

What does this have to do with hungary
@@smal750 that we kept the germans at bay until the ottoman wars. I wanted to show how strong was it.
Hope this channels remains on track and isn't consumed by the cancerous new age politics, love the content.
Árpád was certainly the Kabar Prince Kurszán, and therefore Kurszán and his successors had the title of gyula, the second highest title in the tribal federation.
NEM kabar, hanem KAVAR. Ez a görög nyelv helytelen olvasatán alapul.
Tribes that hate people with small eyes seem racist lol 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
great vid

Daniel here! Will comment when my accaount is working again
Regarding the water tower being dented, an EF 3 in Magee, MS, made a bigger dent several years ago.
Fornosus, Mylan, and Majar... wonderful pronunciations.
Szombathely is, in fact, south of Sopron on the other side of the Danube and is still called Szombathely today.
the Magyars were like the Vikings of Europe
😅
And the Vikings were the Vikings of what exactly?
For sure!
Except, that the Vikings were both from, and operated in, Europe 🤦🏻♂️
An analogy that might make some sense could be a reference to the Magyars as "terrestrial Vikings", or something about the Magyars being "Vikings that used steeds of flesh & bone, instead of oar & sail." But even those are pretty poor comparisons, given that Vikings spent the vast majority of their time on solid ground, and certainly were habitual riders (although they did not enter combat mounted).
Eastern Europe. The Scandinavian lands are most definitely in Europe.
@@OfficialUKGov The Vikings were essentially just your average white American football fan when they don’t get their way
That’s why there’s a team named after them
Thankyou
Your videos help me write my story by using realistic battle dialogue haha
Wow. I really thought Louis the Child had em on that field. It really shocked me
It's pretty clear the degree of disconnect between Western Europe and Rome in this period. The complete unfamiliarity of East Francian and Italian military leaders with Horse archers demonstrates, for example, the they weren't familiar with Crassus' defeat at Carrhae, for example.
21:48 magyar has good logistic to able to swim with horses to other side of the river. Hungarians reached Spain, France, Greece also
Thx bro!
holy smokes, i just discovered i WASNT a subscriber even though i watched like a dozen of this great videos! What a mistake!
big fan of the old school battle -animations
Graves of Hungarian conquerors had Christian chest crosses, so may of them they already know Christianity. King Saint Stephen just adopted western style Christianity. Bulcsu was already baptized about 950 in Constantinople.
Time stamps pls

Come on! Dragoviches (Dragon Witches) has to be the coolest name, for a people, I've ever heard off! 😎
I'm Hungarian. You need to understand the absolute ambivalent mentality of my people. This is a quick guide:
Thank you. Have a nice day.
the difference between Hungary and all those countries is that they where Empires. where at one point they stretch too far to be governed properly and eventually they break up due to internal conflicts. the Holy Roman Empire where just a bunch of estates being held together. if Hungary had imperial ambitious and spread too far, they would cease to exist unless they ended up like the Mongols
proud to be hungarian

My ancestors :)
@@user-io7sh7nx7cHungarians doesnt define themself by race, but rather the culture and language they share
All European nations: "Save us, my lord, from the arrows of the Hungarians" -We came with horse and arrow they all bent knee front of us
And then you were defeated
@@MrWolfgangtube Well yes but actually no, we became better under the ✝️🗿
@@arontakacs8869 I am well aware and agree with you. Europe became weigh stronger with the Hungarians included. Would be an interesting string of alternative history if the Magyars were not defeated at Lechfeld, stayed outside the european kingdoms and then the Ottomans appear.
@@MrWolfgangtube Between 899 and 970, according to contemporary sources, the researchers count 47 (38 to West and 9 to East) raids in different parts of Europe. From these campaigns only 8 were unsuccessful and the others ended with success. At Lechfeld (sources mention betrayal, as Grand Prince Taksony wanted remove his rivals) a small Hungarian army was defeated deep in German land, and Germans did not dare to attack Hungary since 907, the next German attack was only in 1030 and in 1051 with German defeats.
Can you make a video about Croatian history, because its really unerrated and full of stories?

These battles are forerunners of Manzikert...
Comment sacrifice for the alg.
Maybe it did happen, but I’m surprised none of the neighbours decided to also invade and snap up lands whilst Francia just got smashed over and over
Hungarians always joined the local conflicts and helped the weaker to make all of them weaker and to prevent any great central power to emerge in Europe that could threat Hungary.
Coin toss?
