OK, so on your last video I commented that it was too bad that you couldn't wait to eat to get back to Oban for fish & chips as I had had the best F&C there. Well in this video you went to the exact place I did back in 1996! My mouth is watering!
I love Oban, it's like the start of my holiday as a kid. As we would spend most of my summer at my grandparents house on the island of Coll. So it was an early rise in the morning to get to Oban, to get the ferry to Coll.
We spent a couple of days in Oban last September and loved it. It is currently not on our itinerary when we return to Scotland in 2024, but after reading about the great places to eat (that we missed) I may reassess that decision. Cheers from Canada's west (wet) coast.
I live and work in Oban, great video guys, well presented, I think the west coast and islands of Scotland are great to visit , especially by boat especially in the spring/summer seasons
I agree Derek. I live in Paisley and previously worked in airlines. I have travelled a lot and I believe there is no where more beautiful than Argyll. This clip showed Oban and Kerrera at their best. The colours are vivid and stunning ❤
My Nan and Grandad lived there and worked in that fish and chip[ shop 30 years ago, my childhood holidays were spent in Oban and it is amazing, I have photos of it from 45 years ago and its changed a little but not that much ..............Lucky you glad you enjoyed
Wow, What an amazing town to live near! That shop has some of the best fish and chips we’ve had. Glad to hear Oban hasn’t changed a lot over the years as well ❤️
there is a few lovely places in oban if you ever visit again that i think you will enjoy like the views from ganvan in oban or dunnolie castle and a few other places . i m glad your enjoyed your visit to oban and your video was awesome :D
Thanks a million to the both of you for such a tremendous video, l have thurly enjoyed every minute of it, but just to let you know that I have been up to Macaigs tower & what a wonderful view you get from there , so a very big thank you for the making of this luvly video 👍👍🥪🥪🍰🍰🌹🌹
Stunning video of Oban in the sunshine. Loved it. Our family go every year, and have done for about 25 years. I laughed when you headed into the George St. Fish and Chip shop. It's our favourite, and always the very 1st place we visit after parking up. If you were self catering and wanted seafood, Watt's fishmongers right next to the Ferry terminal is amazing, and takes catch right off the boats. Western Scotland should be on everyone's list - but we don't want it on anyone's list! Selfish or what? :)
We sure were spoiled by the weather! What a wonderful place to visit for so long. I think the fish and chips there have stayed my favorite this whole trip!!! Thanks for the tip, we’ll definitely be back so we’ll have to try Watt’s! Thanks for enjoying this adventure with us 😊
Just found your channel😊,,I'm fortunate enough to live in oban and run a chaterboat ,,,the coast of kerrera is my office ,,,if your ever over again I'll make sure you get the best seafood and possibly take you for a cheeky little trip to see the seals etc 😉👌newly subscribed enjoy your travels 😀
You guys are great together. Congrats on a cool adventure and well-done vlog. Subed to see more. As a father-son team of Anthropologist park rangers who love to share the people, cultures, history and natural treasures that make our World so special, we appreciate when others share these things too. Keep up the good work and we hope our work can inspire and entertain you someday, as yours has for us. Cheers from Turtle and Bear.
Thanks for the kind words and enjoying this with us! We can’t wait to get back to Oban, we loved it. Your adventures sound wonderful as well. Great that you and your son are seeing the world together! Appreciate the sub and back at you! Happy travels 🙂
Beauty of a town, or 'toon' as the Scots say. Thanks for the insight into your day on Kerrera, as I'm hoping to get there on my next trip. If you get back to Oban, have a visit to Marky Dan's pub, which has great food and I, and many others find to be a great place where people visiting and locals often have a good chat and some laughs. Some other great fish 'n chips spots in town too. I like Nories. - Sláinte!
We will certainly be back to Oban so your recommendations are much appreciated! It's made its way towards the top of our favorite towns in Scotland list. Enjoy your time in Kerrera! Thanks for tuning in!
Nice video! You had a gorgeous day while visiting Kerrera & Gylen Castle. This castle you had to yourself, the Urquhart castle ruin in Inverness is so crowded so difficult to take photos with no people. Are you going to Glen Coe? The Falkirk Water Wheel? When overseas we always bring our own campy style forks/spoons/knives, as it was difficult to eat with the funky type you had.Enjoy your time there!
It was a gorgeous day! Couldn’t have asked for better weather! Glen Coe is our new video releasing today 🤗 One of our favorite places! We keep missing Falkirk, we just may need to add it on our list! And GREAT tip on the forks/spoons/knifes, we’ll remember that one 🙌 Thanks for watching!
@@AndrewandMegan. I will have to watch your Glen Coe video then, thank you! Oh, also bring along on wandering off the beaten path days, a small serrated knife, it is great for that fresh loaf of bread and a chunk of cheese that you buy along the way. Cheers!
Definitely a full day. We wanted to get there between 10-11am but waiting for the ferry took longer than anticipated. So we arrived around lunch time and left with the last ferry. I think it would fun to stay the night there and have 2 days. But we did about a 5 hour day and saw everything that was on our list!
The coliseum is where they used to hold the haggis fighting championships before it was outlawed on animal rights grounds after the unfortunate incident during the abandoned 1997 event. It’s not talked about locally anymore.
Ah Yes! The elusive haggis. We've heard great stories about these wee, long haired animals from locals. Too bad they can only be spotted at night and in the highland hills 😆
Built of Bonawe granite taken from local quarries, it was built in 1897 by local banker John Stuart McCraig to provide work for local stonemasons over the winter months as well as to be a lasting monument to the McCaig family. However, work stopped when John died in 1902 and the building was never completed.
That colliseum is what is known as a folly, where rich men would be build structures that have no real function.Romans never got that far north in scotland
Actually, you'll be surprised to know they did, especially on the East coast where they conducted a number of punitive military campaigns, advancing away up as far as the Moray Firth & building forts on the way (many of which are documented by archaeology). Mind you, you're probably right about the likes of Oban, given the mountain barrier on the West coast, although we can't rule out that it might also have been 'visited' by the Roman Navy which many believe to have sailed round the top of Scotland. 🤓
Simply ran out of time that day. Along with a few other recommendations, Dunstaffnage Castle has been added to the list as we'll be visiting again this summer :)
No mention that Kerrera was used as a training-ground for commandoes in WW2, & that an underground old bunker/shelter is there. Doesn't fit the cuteness p'haps..
How fascinating! We didn’t know about that or we definitely would have checked it out. Love learning all angles of history. We hope to head back there one day because there was still more of the island we couldn’t make it to before the last ferry!
Yes, definitely a cultural difference Megan and I have learned since being in the UK. A 'city' is a very broad and interchangeable word in the States, however, we understand that there's quite the difference in the UK between towns, villages, and cities. One of the perks of traveling... Always learning :)
@@AndrewandMegan There is no longer a specific definition of what size of living area in the UK is a city. If its deemed to be a city, its a city. The requirement for there to be a cathedral church has been dropped. But I would say a city needs many 100000's of residents with all of the usual services found in a city. Definitely not Oban, much too small
Americans always pronounce UK names wrong. Kerrera is pronounced KERRerra. In UK always stress the first syllable and crush the others, this is not always true in every placename but it's usually the way.
