watching #32 and #31 makes me wonder how US history is taught differently in different regions. I grew up in the midwest and none of these events in the southwest were mentioned or emphasized
It really isn't even in California. They do a rather pathetic job on wwii as well. Shocking because, in the US, along with the Great Depression, WWII is the paramount event of the 20th century.
I grew up in Ohio and we were taught very little about this war. We were required to take Ohio history. All we were taught is there was a battle at the Alamo but not really why and there was one chapter in our history book about the Mexican American War. I had to read James Michners book Texas to really get a sense of the war. It's a wonderful book about the history of Texas. Even if you are from Texas youll learn something but I digress. The war was a land grab by president Polk. A president most Americans have not heard of. The actions of the Texas Rangers during the invasion of Mexico was borderline genocide. The final defense of Mexico City was by the cadets of the military academy - children were all that were left. The Rangers killed many innocents and their behavior would not be condoned today. They shot so many people with thier Navy Colts the barrels would overheat and in more than one instance they had no water to pour on the barrels to cool them off so they had to pee on them. True story. In every city in Mexico there is a street called Ninos Heroes -Children Heros that fought in the battle of Mexico and were wiped out by the Army and Texas Rangers. There was a lot of hatred after the Alamo and Goliad where the Mexicans executed 417 Texan prisoners. Ive always hated Santa Anna for that and when i read he died penniless, destitute and disgraced in squalor I thought that just maybe there is some justice in the world.
Im from minnesota and was in 4th grade in 2002 I remember the textbook covered standard events throughout the 19th century, this and the gold rush would have been pretty much the same chapter
