  • If you fish for catfish you need a good catfish bait. Most catfish fishermen want the best catfish bait. In this video I talk about the strawberry Jello chicken catfish bait I have used for over a year, and how the switch to plain chicken breast for catfish bait is working out. I am drifting for catfish in this video using planer boards with Santee rigs and circle hooks baited with plain pieces of chicken breast for catfish bait.

I recently retired. I decided to take up fishing after hitting the bank a few times and found I enjoyed it a lot. Not knowing much about it at all I came across and started watching your videos..... And now I'm actually catching fish! So I would like to express my appreciation to you for all you've provided in the videos that has taught me so much in such a short period of time. This is a blast, even on the off days. Thank You!

Some people just want to make it complicated. But fishing for catfish is not a complicated sport; or shouldn't be at least. I do well on "naked chicken" as well.

I love it that there’s some fishermen that are still ‘too cool’ to go cat fishing with chicken lol Like it’s belittling or something I guess. Blue cats like fresh meat. They are not going to look at the menu, they are going to eat it.
Taking some great fish on the Pee Dee river system in SC, on plain breast meat.

I definitely appreciate u. I was trying the strawberry jello chicken breast and the turtles were enjoying this more than the fish. So today I tried just plain chicken breast and caught some good one's....first time off chicken breast. Thanks for all the information and wonderful content

When I started fishing as a kid I always saw step dad but a big chicken liver on his hook and ask why. And his response was catfish.
Then I remember when I first started fishing for only cats I had just picked up a tub of worms from Walmart and was walking down the meat section and just randomly grabbing a tub of liver. Up till the last year and half so 8 years my only cat fish bait was chicken liver. Then I was introduced do shad and skipjack

Dieter, those old corks that don’t run true and vibrate might help the bite. Maybe do a vid on corks that run straight and corks that are offset.

I knew the color couldn't be the "trick" to the chicken. Apparently the scent is more for us to think it's special.

Been slow here in my area NW Illinois last 3 weeks. I don't have a boat any more. But we have LOW water no rain. My spots I hit pretty dead, when guys in the boats slow down and yell to you want fish and then hold up 1 fish. Others said same hit or miss. Did catch a 8lb channel yesterday he was beat up looked like to me he was just off the nest. Been getting more flatheads. Love your vids.

I agree with you about rod length. I have 7 foot rods and would be ok with 6 feet.
Length is more for casting, and hookset with a lot of line out. Fishing from a boat 6 feet would be plenty.

Would love to see a visual of what those little corks do to float the bait? Maybe you could fill a bathtub or something? Don’t see how that little cork could move bait off the bottom.

Hi Dieter!! Tell me something. What size spinning reels do you use!! I don’t know which cast the best. The spin casters or the bait casters. People don’t understand. I fish from the bank. I know where I fish, it’s a deep trench or drop off out there. People say that I be casting way out there. That’s where I catch all my catfish.

Mr. Melhorn, when you do fish with cut bait or fresh bait…do you normally catch them the day of the trip or if not how to do you store them? Is it okay to freeze them? I very seldom have time to try and catch shad and fish all in the same day…. Any advice?
