Yep! So Karkat has some measure of exposure, as a single case study. Dave interacts a lot differently with Dirk though, and has the added alteration of Dirk being the Post-Scratch version of his abusive Bro, who Karkat has presumably heard a lot about. Another valid interpretation of the scene is likely Karkat watching to make sure Dave is safe.

While yes spying isn't the best option it's surely done with the best of intentions and in this case it's not like it's causing any harm. Dave is his best friend above all and is also his boyfriend/quadrantmate and if he knows about bro then I understand him being cautious of dirk.
