We're finally diving in! VOLUME ONE of the first Deluxe Edition - I'm still testing out camera options, if mics are needed, the angle of it all - so please note, things will likely change for the first few weeks as I get settled into a style I like and that works best.
But in any case, this starts out...uhm...QUITE a bit different than the anime, as we see a very jaded Guts setting out to track down the demons that messed up his life, alongside a very adorable Elf that is basically ME if I were in this story! Time to start the masterpiece!

1. You made it past the first pannel. Hurray for Romania! Now you can call your yourself a true berserk fan :)
2. Corkus gets avanged first. He is that important! Imho most people just hate him and don't notice his importance :/
3. Black Swordsman: Guts as his worst. WIthout the Golden Age context he feels edgy but with context you just realize how mentally wrecked he is :(
4. Did you miss Collette and her grandpa in the bar scene?^^
5. imho Guts threw up because of his trauma with killing children.. remind you of the golden age
6. I think Elves are like litte children. They have this cute aura that makes most people wanna smile when they see em.
I feel so accomplished making it past that first page! Huzzah! Glad to be a TRUE fan, now! *jumps in air*
And for Corkus to get avenged "first" - that gives me hope we'll go on a conquest to avenge the others, but we shall see, eh?
And yeah, Guts is definitely at his lowest point here; just devastated from what's happened to him. I *think* I noticed Collette and the grandpa at the bar scene in the anime and manga together, but I'll have to go back to double-check!
That's interesting about the "trauma" part and killing kids; I'll have to bring that up in a future discussion. And yeah, Puck definitely has a childlike innocence to him! Thanks for the comment! :D

Rather than having to do big post-reading reviews at the end you can always just pause and discuss themes, ideas, characters, and speculation in the moment. That's the nice thing about a book format, it's less on-rails.

Seeing guts stup so low to have sex with a demon is truly showcasing how down in the gutter he is he’s will to do anything to get his vengeance in this whole arc 😢😢💔💔

This after seeing the anime first is truly a recipe for surprises, yes haha, that's Corkus's demon! Seeing how far into the sexy that she let Guts get before trying to eat him I wonder how far Corkus got. This format is enjoyable enough for me to watch, I found myself wanting to see more of the pages more closely but that's just youtube.
That is WILD that it's the demon that killed Corkus -- I can't wait for the callback when we get to it! Honestly, would it be hilarious if the lady demon just let Corkus nestle his head in her boobs before killing him? Should Corkus be insulted? He probably feels that way, hahaha!!

i remember being 15 and my dad would rent all the different anime volumes for me one at a time. by the end i was so gutted and empty. i needed closure but i knew the manga was just sad. i held off on the manga for a long time until i eventually jumped into it years later.

I absolutely love Berserk and I never get tired of listening to people talk about it. I had seen a later video of your pop up so I wanted to start here. It clearly meant you didn't give up at Black Swordsman. I hear a lot of people say as edgy as Guts is its very offputting.

Ooh I’ve just started reading berserk! In your opinion, does the anime follow it well? I’ve heard things about the animation, but it’s not a big deal. Can’t wait to read either you!(3 months late to the party) great reactions as always!
Ahhh, the anime follows it well for the MOST part -- there are a few storylines left out of the anime for reasons (probably since the 1997 version wasn't going to continue past that initial season), but the manga is SO worth it! :) I think the anime is great, but I'm loving the manga more! I hope you do too! Thank you for the comment and kind words!

The woman who was executed didn't have the brand of sacrifice. Guts drew it on her in blood, chucked the head back up, then swiped the blood across his neck as if to say "I know what you are and I'm coming for you".
I started reading Berserk back in 07 and went in blind, at that point the darkest manga I had read was Hellsing. I'd be lying if I said I wasn't at all intimidated when starting out haha.
It's interesting going through this arc again after already knowing Guts' history. What would normaly come off as just an edgy, dark character suddenly terns into a tragic and broken one.
I'm very excited to get into the manga for this series! But yes, VERY intimidating! We'll see what happens, but thank you for the kind words and comment!
Im curious, do you think you would have dropped this series if you had started with the manga instead of the anime? It’s one if the common criticisms with this series that they don’t really like the overly edgy tone. Also, cool on you catching who the demon in the beginning is. RIP Corkus 😢
Honestly, no, I don't think i would have dropped the series -- I feel better with the context I have going into this volume from the anime, but I feel I would instantly have still attached to Puck and wanted to know more about Guts, for sure! :) Thanks for the kind words and comment! I know your reading it physically but maybe for next week you could do something like put the scans on the screen in partial or full with the vidyard link as you read along. This method made it rather difficult to follow along and stay focused at least for me. Happy to see you started it, enjoy!! ( just saw the pin lol)
The scans are there! They have to be as transparent as they are so my video doesn't get flagged -- I apologize for the way I have to do it, but it's the best with my set up and for fair use! Thanks for the comment!
