This is NOT the solution. It is even more elegant than that. Did you not notice there are 2 magnets on each side of the box? Think about it.
I guess I didn't. But this solution does work, so I guess in a way it is a solution... But please share how you got it open.

Start with the 2 balls on the narrow portion inside the box. Put on the lid. Turn the box on its side and manipulate back and forth until the 2 balls drop through the hole into the larger section inside the box. Then slide the feet of the box until the lid pops open.
There are 2 sets of magnets in the top. One set attracts, one st repels. The bottom of the box is attached to the wall that contains the magnets. The balls, when in the small interior chamber, prevent the bottom from sliding to the magnets that repel.
Pretty elegant.

Why are there hinges on the side of the box?
