    This week, I made a sharp thing. I needed a skiving knife for my leatherwork and after checking the models and prices online, I decided to make my own. It was a lot cheaper and quicker to make my own. Plus, I designed it so it fits my hand perfectly and it is very confortable to use.
    I made so it would go nicely with my big leatherworking round knife I made a few months ago. I used 3mm thick XC75/1075 High Carbon Steel, 2mm brass plate and walnut scales. I'm pretty happy about how it turned out, it's super sharp, cuts leather nicely and now I just need to improve my skiving skills :)
    I hope you'll like the video.

    • @RedSmith
      @RedSmith  3 роки тому

      Thanks a lot Jon! I really appreciate your kind words. I bought my sharpening stones on Amazon, and if I remember correctly, there were the cheapest ones. They do the job, but I wouldn't recommend them. After a while, they tend to get a curve and they need to be straighten down for the next use which is very time consuming. I'm gonna buy new ones very soon, but this time I'll buy japanese stones, even if there are a little bit more expensive. I hope it helps :)

    Very well done! I would love to make a knife myself. What's your experience with 1075 steel? Is is soft enough to be shaped with files and a jewelers saw?

    • @RedSmith
      @RedSmith  3 роки тому +1

      Thank you! In my experience, 1075 is soft enough to be worked with files. But it takes time. I wouldn't use a jewelers saw though on high carbon steel. I'm sure it works, but it would take so long. An angle grinder or a set of files would do the work more quickly :)

    Isn’t it dangerous to be wearing gloves while using the bandsaw or sander? If the saw or sander catches the glove it will drag your entire hand in it.

    • @RedSmith
      @RedSmith  2 роки тому

      Don't believe everything people say. It can indeed be dangerous when you have a spinning bit or something that can catch your glove. On a 2x72, the only risk is to grind your glove instead of your hand. Wearing gloves when working on the belt tgrinder, saved my skin numerous times. I guess it's all about personnal preferences. Thanks for watching!

    • @AlexanderMason1
      @AlexanderMason1 2 роки тому

      @@RedSmith a bandsaw will definitely, without a doubt catch a glove and pull your entire hand/arm in and many people have be seriously mutilated/maimed exactly in that manner. The belt sander though is probably much safer and I can see the benefit in wearing gloves to protect from burns or cuts but also isn’t 100% safe. If for whatever reason you accidentally put you hand near the the spindle or if you glove gets caught in some jig it could be a serious issue.
