I'm Polish, so these are staples in my kitchen! Haluski is an all-time family favorite! I fry up onions, Kielbasa and cabbage in a huge cast iron pot. I then add cooked wide egg noodles and a can of butter beans (juice and all). I always add butter, black pepper and caraway seeds. Ultimate comfort food!

Mary, this recipe looked so easy that last night I made it for my husband. Because of a serious accident, 5 years ago, that in addition to many broken bones I also had a traumatic brain injury (TBI). Because of the TBI I struggle to do the simplest of activities and chores that are now all left to my sweet husband. I started the process of making your dish early in the day and with many rests was able to complete it in time for his dinner.
Because of health issues I am unable to eat animal products so I can not attest to it's flavor, BUT, I can tell you that my dear lovey was amazed at it's flavor and that I was able to manage all the preparation. He was overjoyed to learn that it made enough for many meals, some of which he froze.
Thank you dear sister in Jesus for sharing so much information. God Bless!

We make cabbage soup (no tomatoes in ours) and have a good amount of kielbasa. I also grew up in a Polish American neighborhood and have similar memories of the church and family events. Kielbasa also goes very well in saurkraut. One thing I do a little different is that I caramelize the cabbage a bit for added flavor

I do my cabbage similarly. I do more of a cabbage soup though. I cut up onion and garlic and I put that in with the kielbasa when it's browning. Then I add the cabbage and some beef broth. Let that simmer for a little bit. Then I add carrots, potatoes, chickpeas, and if I feel like I want more green I'll add broccoli. Let that simmer for a a little bit. Then I turn it down and let it sit on the stove until the potatoes get soft. I salt, pepper, and garlic powder to taste. It is so delicious. I remember my grandmother and mother both making this dish. We do have European ancestry but I don't know where my grandmother got the recipe from.

Besides the cabbage, I'll add color like carrot - shredded (or chopped and precook with meat) orange or yellow pepper. I add scallions but with the vegetables, not with the meat. And I have eliminated the vinegar because I don't like the taste and increased the mustard just a tad. Awesome. 😊

Mary, I will have to try your recipe. It fits in my low carb diet. Thanks for this recipe for sure. I have a wonderful Lousiana dish called Smothered Cabbage. This is NOT low carb for sure! The fats are bacon grease and butter but in greater amounts. Fry up sausage, take it out when browned, add sliced boiled red potatoes, brown and take out. Put in the cabbage, along with lots of onions in the remaining fat (making sure you have enough fat in order to make the "sauce" as it is the vehicle for the remaining ingredients) and stir fry until the cabbage is carmelized to a golden brown. Here comes the spices...cajun seasoning to your liking, salt, pepper, and powdered garlic. Lots of garlic, the more the better. The garlic is the shining jewel in this recipe. Make sure that all the veggies are coated with the seasonings. Add the sausage. Now add a cup of water and put the lid on to smother the cabbage at a simmer until the mixture has had time to meld the flavors, stirring frequently. Add the potatoes at the last to warm them up. Serve the smothered cabbage with the sauce over rice along with garlic french bread. Yummy!

I use bacon fat, 1onion, several pieces of garlic. I fry that with keilbas. I chop up cabbage, rinse and throw that in pan, add salt and pepper and add a garlic pepper sauce, stir and fry it up. I dont cover, I like my cabbage with some texture to it. I dont care for soft cabbage. Done and its dilish.
I will have to try yours.

This looks fab Mary! I am going to try this. I make a variation of sorts, Meal in a Pot. It has canned green beans with juice, potatoes(cut in bite size) cabbage wedges, and sausage. Layer in this order, add 1c water, cover and steam for 20-30 min. Yummity!!! Family favorite.

    Hi Ms Mary
    Nice to see you 💕
Your dish looks yummy & Bacon grease makes this dish even more tasty 👍
I made cabbage & kielbasa about 2 weeks ago
It’s so tasty 😋 We also like fry onions in ours
We love cabbage and eat it often as a side dish
When I was a young girl momma would cut me a chunk & I’d eat it raw with salt on it & I still eat a piece like that when ever I make cabbage 😁
    Have a great weekend
    Take care

I love this recipe AND video! We usually broil our kielbasa, that's how I grew up having it. Fried cabbage is a favorite in our home, so I'm sure this will go over quite well. We'll likely serve it with roasted potatoes or rice, and include onions in with the cabbage and turkey bacon. Thank you, Mary!

The dish looks so tasty Mary. I don't think we can get kielbasa in the UK but can get a large smoked sausage which would suffice.
Many thanks Mary for sharing. Xx

I wasn't able to access the recipe on your website but did make my own version, I used Ukrainian sausage, cabbage, onions, no salt, used black pepper, red pepper flakes, cumin, apple cider vinegar, bit of potato water, maybe 1/2 cup, put it all in my cast iron casserole in the oven at 350, stirred occasionally and no fuss no muss, it was delicious

This has got to be one of my favorite recipes from you. I use the turkey kielbasa also but just have made it with kraut. This with the fried cabbage looks amazing. The mustard and vinegar probably add the perfect touch. I was a little jealous when you took that first bite and went mmmmm. 😉 Now I definitely have to make this! 👩‍🌾👏👏👏💛

I make a version passed from my Irish side. Cut up the smoked sausage as well as a good amount of potatoes and onions, then sauté them, adding onions last. Season to taste (I use salt, garlic powder, onion powder, oregano, and paprika), it's done when potatoes are soft. Relatively high heat oil is better for cooking it, animal fat is my go to, then butter at the end for the soft richness

I'm half Polish. Kielbasa and Kapusta is what you're making but we have entire sliced onion in there! We cook the Kielbasa without slicing at all. Cabbage, onions and well rinced sourkraut with a bit of brown sugar in a roaster pan, sausage on top of that topped with the uncooked bacon. Slow cook it for hours till bacon is crisp 😋 👌 so delicious
Then you can cut the sausage links to whatever size you want.
