It’s been incredible to watch the progress on this game from the beginning! You never realise just how much you’ve accomplished until you look back on how things started
this dude dosent realise how much i love these videos , videos like these of poeple making things and having such a lifestyle is what i started coding in the first place. please never stop these videos - make more more AND MOREEEEE
Appreciate you showing the periods of roadblocks and how you deal with them. Wish people would talk about this universal experience more. Happy holidays!
I'm an animator by trade, and y'know what? To me, the animations look fine! They match the cute, bumbly, cozy aesthetic you've got going already. Rigging and articulating and getting believable weight and motions on these guys is gonna be a deep pit you will sink your time into, and if you go part way but not all the way, I fear you're going to enter a kind of "uncanny valley" that a lot of beginner animators live in... You say yourself modeling humans isn't your strong suit. Well animating them is an order of magnitude harder... Anyway, I know you're smart and capable, and if you're excited about animating, then by all means have at it: I will enjoy watching! I am just saying... it's a can of worms and your lil guys are charming as heck already.
i don't do coding. i wanted to but then gave up accepting that i wasn't made for me lol. but your videos have been delightful and i've been following each and every one of them wholeheartedly. i'm sure you showing your frustrating moments and "failures" help other coders, specially the newbies to feel better about themselves and be inspired by your work. merry christmas dear.
“I guess today I will have to try and tackle interrupting behaviour’s again” Rufus in the background, also doing his best on tackling interrupting behaviours
I really love your Devlog videos. They´re always super interesting and entertaining : ) PS: Your 8 bit computer is amazingly cool and I´d love to see more on that. PPS: Your food always looks soooo good ^^
I'm glad you're sharing even the moments of struggle. It's all too easy to watch devlogs and feel inferior, because you watch someone make a lot of progress in just 15 minutes, while in reality it takes two weeks, including a full day of work without visible progress. So, actually getting to see that is really encouraging!
Your game engine feels so sophisticated, and homegrown feels so polished that I often wonder how Socuwan would Look like today. Thank you so much for the great video, I really enjoyed it! My absolute favorite channel!
right now my favorite devlog series on yt. its just so calming and it shows that not everything is working out as planed. please keep going its awesome
It's amazing to see all the progress that you has been doing with Homegrown, sometimes you had mentioned the city builder and started to remember the bad feeling about what made you gave up from that project This sensation of worriness that tries to take your control is really complicated to avoid and beat. I has been studying game dev since january and i gave up a lot from my projects, always had "Interesting idea, let's make a prototype to test", play a bit with the code and never touch it again This feeling of being dumb and committing the same erros from the previous almost made me gave up from learn game development. I know that for a developer which has made a "succesful" indie game, the pressure about your next projects increase a lot, at least there is light in the end, we all trust on you bro, you're amazing and is one of my inspirations to continue trying to improve
it would be really cool to see the villagers talk and interact with each other when they collide like walking on the same path seeing them talking or laughing would be amazing
Have a really great end of the year and happy festive days. You have been a great company for me this year. Since i really like what you do and the vibes from your videos i started something while watching them. I normally watch youtube videos while playing or working. But with your videos i do nothing else, maybe a cup of tea or some mate (argentinian brew). But try to focus in it and enjoy it without all the distractions we get in our daily basis. Hope you are ok and we can keep this ritual next year. Have a great start.
I've been watching these videos from the beginning and like the others, i absolutely love the progress and "to be a part" of the development. Also I noticed a fellow Hamburger ^^. I've recognized that cinema immediately
It certainly does a bit, but I don't mind too much as I'm happy to prioritize my health over my productivity, especially given that I've had some health issues in the past. Cooking is the most time consuming part - I cook almost every meal from scratch which usually takes 30 - 60 mins per meal. I'm trying to get better at batch cooking though; hopefully that will free up some more time.
For batch cooking I love making Chili (con Carne variation). It’s nutritious and easy to do and you can use it in a variety of different dishes, like burritos, rice, pasta, etc. P.S just trying to return a favor since I picked up a handful of recipes from your videos as well. Cheers
15:39 Create an empty object and put a character in it. Now there will be no problems with rotation when animating the character, because you control the position and rotation of the parent object.
It's probably a lot more work to do it this way, but it makes your videos much more enjoyable for me! In any case, love the progress don't give up! (And I understand your struggle with the interrupt actions. I do the AI in our studio and yep, it's always the messiest part)
This is exactly what I needed to end of my Christmas! Its been an awesome day and I wanted to wish you a very Merry Christmas Karl! Everything is looking so good, I can't wait till the game it out! I am curious how do you export the game do you still do a FAT Jar? I do love how you show the code then explain it and show how it works in game like its so cool to understand how its working! Would you ever consider making tutorials again or explaining the code more? It was so much fun following them! I also love the video style like showing your IRL life! Especally the end with all the electric stuff! Building ur own computer! Awesome stuff as always excited for the new year!
1. Amazing video. It made me sad at first but, it was amazing to see how you don't let the bad memories of an unfinished project bring you down! 2. How does one become part of a 25 person friend group that does not-so-secret-santa? :D
First the City Builder and now the Farming Game. It’s how many years now, since you created income by selling your last game, five? How are you sustaining yourself in terms of paying your bills? I would like to do the same thing at the same amount of time but then I wouldn’t know, how to make a living just by creating my game in such a long period of time bevor selling it and actually creating some income by that. :) Is it crowd funding and UA-cam or some other method , you can talk about?
@@iso_2013 which would then make up a decent amount, agreed. Taxes are deducted and if you either have a job besides or you live in a two ship household you could start this, maybe. Of course, it will take its time to build up a community but it could be worth putting in the passion. Thanks for the info!
Hi thin, great video I liked it quite a lot :) maybe in the future you should be a little bit more careful what to show. I recognized a lot of the surroundings just by watching, no geogesser, I pretty much figured the area where you live I think ^^ just wanted to let you know, have a great new years and keep up the good work and motivation ❤
The marketplace is the center of a village, in normal cases, the scene would need more buildings in the background, not just the far distance, just as a thought.
i also uilt a Ben Eater 8-bit computer and I found some NVRAM that will store the contents of the RAM even when there isnt any power. Saved me from having to rewrite the program everytime i turned the computer on.
Merry Christmas! I love the villagers and the animations - I wonder if the eye brow position is a tiny bit low? I also wonder if their colour should match the hair? Either way, they look amazing! 😎
Merry Christmas to you too! They're actually meant to be the eyes themselves, as if the villager were smiling like ^.^ But a few people seem to think they look like eyebrows so I'll have to do a bit more work on them!
Happy Christmas! I just had a thought, possibly a massive side-track but I wonder if you can give each type of character an "about me" and then use AI to get them to interact? For example you could give one of them "I am standing outside a greengrocer and looking at the items for sale"
I'd actually love to know just how exactly you got the game to interrupt the action so smoothly? Like, I saw the .pause() method being called, but can you share how you interrupted a running action? Does this just set an internal state and continuously check if the state is set under the hood? Or is there some other black magic at play? I've been trying to figure out how to actually interrupt running code elegantly for a while, maybe your ideas are more clever than mine. :)
Sorry but I have a bunch of comments disconnected. I have the feeling that you are moving more and more (no pun intended) from gardening to your town builder game :D Nice baking skills there! Cute the Equinox frame :) Handmade advent calendar is an excellent idea indeed! (25 people for 24 gifts as you do not present yourself :P) The eye color is too prominent and it look like thick eyebrows :D The overall look is great!
You start to sound exhausted. Please take a break to keep up the positivity. The reason I (and perhaps many others) watch your videos is your positive attitude towards gamedev. Now the positivity clearly was not there. Kind of sad, and as a result a bit depressing video. Happy holidays & take care!
Sorry about that! But I think that's just the reality of life. I wasn't feeling any more tired than usual, but normally I only film when I'm feeling good and have just successfully finished implementing some feature. You usually only see the highlights of my weeks. But this time, by filming every day, you see some of the parts where I struggled a bit more, or parts where I was simply more tired because it was the end of the day.
@ThinMatrix I totally understand your feelings as an indie gamedev myself. Good to hear that you are feeling as usual but just filmed a bit more than usual. Even if it may feel fake, I feel like it might be better to sometimes hide the negatives and go with positive vibes only. Anyway, thanks for the video and have a great 2025!
Really fun and great progress :) Maybe to add some thematic flair maybe consider adding non-human character designs (humanoid-racoons, moles, badgers etc.)? Right now the theme is lacking in a "hook" so to say

Gorgeous advent calendar idea.
You just need 24 friends who are able to create things!

Thank you! I'm very happy to hear you like them. I'm actually hoping to not have to implement skeletal animations for the reasons you mentioned.
I second this! The animations are ADORABLE as is!! ❤
Man, your life seems pretty great! I'm happy for you. You got some nice friends, a nice place to live, good food and an awesome environment.

Merry Christmas to you too!
I really love your Devlog videos. They´re always super interesting and entertaining : )
PS: Your 8 bit computer is amazingly cool and I´d love to see more on that.

The 8-bit computer is from Ben Eater - he has a whole UA-cam series on designing and building it, and you can buy kits.

Bread. It's funny to hear "less thinking more doing" during a devlog. Good job taking a break and good job in general.

Each of your videos inspires me even more. Thank you for your amazing content that boosts motivation and encourages me to aim higher
As someone working on a city builder I can confirm that dealing with interruptions to behaviour trees is a bit of a nightmare.
This so dang cool!
I wanted to get into gamedev but wasn't sure how to fund myself.
Thank you for keeping the dream alive ❤

Yaaaay a new ThinMatrix video- what a nice Christmas present!!! Happy holidays everyone! 💫

This was a cool vlog, interested in that 8bit computer project. Really cool

There needs to be a rare villager that has a fishing rod and says "Mornin', nice day for fishing, ain't it? Hu-ha~" when you click him...
another thinmatrix video, another 100 dopamine into my brain! also happy christmas 😊

I hope one day after this farm game gets released, you can return to the city builder and finish that concept, as it had so much progress and promise.
Add object to distract like have a guy pushing a wheelbarrow, add roaming animals around town like birds deer rabbits etc
Amazing content. Thank you :)

A little walking animation where legs are moving might be a nice touch imo 😊
What and how is the cba files used in Java? Kinda looks like lua syntax.

Thanks! I'm from the UK but currently living in Hamburg.

Man villagers looks like anime schoolboys now. I liked the old model more it had way more villager vibes.
Very nice devlog as usual! I was wondering, how do you view scenes in blender so they look exactly like ingame?

why would someone play this over any other farming game? guess you're just making this for fun
Why would you watch this over any other dev log video?
