I kinda wonder if the guy who purchased this truck new in 73 heard the song The Bertha Butt Boogie by the Jimmy Castor bunch , it was kinda of a hit around 73 ish , and named her after the song , any ideas on that?
Those old SQHD interlock shifters were pretty basic which was nice, as long as the sliding interlock collar doesn't get stuck on the output shaft from rust build up on the splines. Great hearing the old Detroit come to life and spin up on the RPM range, they always had a great sound to them.
Hi Wayne happy to see the problem wasn't too serious and the payoff we all got to hear the sweet sound of the big v12 singing through the trees and yes a shop for you would be very cool when you can do it
Brought back memories . helped my old buddy change the front pig in the same Tractor Silver 92 , Late October in a cold rain . Still do it if I could Long Live Detroit Diesel This was 35 yr ago.You rock .
MAN Brother when I heard you say that You are going to restore this Beautiful Truck. When you get the building finished them that's when you will start to restore it l said OH Hell YEAH!!!
I can't get enough of this old cabover, and it's so cool to watch you bring her back to glory. Can't wait to see the paint and polish she'll get in the future.
Hey Wayne, Cool old truck and great repair. A problem with those old trucks is everybody and their uncle have worked on them. They got a million miles on them and sometimes they get patched just so the driver can get back on the road. I might be wrong but it seems the seal went in backwards. I believe that seal is to keep gear oil from exiting the power divider by running down the shaft. If gear oil pushes past that seal and gets on that diaphragm, it will cause it to swell up and fail.
Hi Wayne ! If you're ever caught in a winter snow storm at night in a steep canyon that power divider may save your life . Pretty sure along with other factors one saved my job , and my bacon when I was truckin back in the mid 70s in NM. I'd like to think my driving skill may have had something to do with it as well . Anyway you'll be glad you fixed yours should you ever need it . Have a great weekend !
Well I find inter-axle diff locks almost useless but not quite. They are needed, this isn't about that, more they have profound limitations when off road. I do rural steel deliveries. We have 2 semis for the purpose. I drive about 5000 miles a month on average to many farms. Often the roads are wet and unmade. One semi has inter-axle only, the other semi an inter-axle and a cross lock on the front axle of the drive. On the cross lock only semi the problem is this, if you ever drop a steer tire into a ditch off the side of the road while backing in somewhere, if the inter-axle is 'IN" what tends to happen is you get stuck worse than if you didn't have it 'IN'. If you leave it 'OUT' you still get stuck but not as bad. Backing into tight locations is the job. I'm a master reverser not as good as some but better than most. I do it all day when on local - you get good at it after awhile. It is the reversing at farms that finds the limitations of the inter-axle. The other semi with the cross lock doesn't have this issue. You just hit both diff locks and the difference is amazing compared to an inter-axle only. After being stuck at least 6x in 5 years in the inter-axle only truck no surprises which truck I prefer to take for farm deliveries. The cross lock equipped truck hasn't got stuck yet. It still might happen because I often take liberties with it that I know I probably shouldn't but that just shows how reassuring the difference is. As a note, even on concrete driveways at factories, backing in with the inter-axle lock 'ON' still hardly helps as the diagonally opposite wheel sets on the drive still spin! To compensate you have to use momentum as well meaning you're backing in faster than you'd likein a tight location. They don't really help when you need them most. As long as all the wheels are on the ground they're OK I suppose. My experience and it's my daily job.
@@ThePaulv12 Dunno if this works in a big rig, but in cars with an open or one-wheel-peel differential, when I'm stuck sitting and spinning, I tap the brakes. If you do it right, it will make the differential switch the power over to the other wheel, which might have traction. I've calmly walked cars out of several stuck spots in the snow.
@@DanEBoyd Yeah it could help. When I got stuck across a rural farm road one time, I tried that and it worked. The wheels were spinning bad so I used high range reverse and tapped the brakes a few times while they were spinning and noted it would lunge a bit and thought we're onto something here. It provided just enough extra to get the trailer over a small hump that I was pushing up against. The problem is truck air brakes work differently to cars. There's no direct hydraulic connection. Springs apply the brakes and air pressure releases the brakes so using the brakes like this has a lag making it difficult to 'feel'. Also the air gets depleted and the brakes lock on - this incident that happened about 8x - its painful getting your truck stuck. You just have to sit there and hold the RPM up until the compressor pumps air back up.
You just listen to the old Pork Chop Express here now and take his advice on a dark and stormy night when the lightning’s crashin’ and the thunder’s rollin’ and the rain’s coming down in sheets thick as lead.
