Holy moly. I really think more videos need made to honor these men. I live close to the Somme museum in Northern Ireland and hope to see if they are looking for volunteers in the summer to get a bit of work experience.

My Grand uncle Private William Kane fought with the 36th Ulster and is one of thousands who were never found. His name is remembered on the Theipval memorial. Rocky runs a great tour and is very knowledgeable plus a lovely guy, I hope to see him again in September when I return.. I live about five miles from Helens Tower which has some lovely walks around it. The UVF trained around its grounds and the Ulster Tower replica is a reminder of one of the last sights the 36th saw of Ulster as they headed off to France...
    Another excellent video....

I'm planning on taking my son to the Somme Heritage Centre this week or next. I'm just discovering the Ulster Memorial Tower is based on Helens Tower.

@@donnasmyth45 Donna you can park your car at the gate lodge of the clandeboye estate about two miles outside Ards on the Crawfordsburn road. Its a lovely walk about an hour long until you reach the tower.. Enjoy..

@@Team-fabulous thanks for the reply 😊. I went searching for Helens Tower a couple of yrs ago, but couldn't find it, haha. So I should head to Clandeboye estate and it'll be easy enough to find?

@@donnasmyth45 yes. You will pass the junction of Anderson's Hill on your left and about a quarter of a mile later you will come to a tight lefthand bend. You will see the gate lodge on your right and probably parked cars on the road... Hope this helps..

Another great watch Rob. Those Ulstermen fought so bravely at the Schwaben Redoubt. At the ceremony last month I focussed on Billy Mcfadzean's name on a new memorial. Gave his life to save his comrades. Ulstermen were in great voice singing our National Anthem lead by Emilie Brown superb as always. Same at Thiepval. I agree the Tower is fantastic and people should visit. Another splendid Irish Tower is at the Peace Park in Mesen.

Thank you for another excellent and informative video. I have visited the Ulster Tower on numerous occasions and am always moved by the bravery of the men of the 36 Ulster Division, as I am of the men of the 16 Irish Division

Great video, Rob! Incredible how Lord Kitchner (sp?) was able to form a whole division of volunteers when he was hoping for one brigade.
Great info about the theories of how the 36th Ulsters captured Gernan positions. Intriguing how close the front lines were.
Great overview of the battlefield and the challenges the 36th Ulsters faced with being attacked on so many sides. I can't imagine how brutal that was. Excellent map.
Rocky and the rest of the team did a wonderful job preserving the trenches.
Sad how many casualties there were (5,500). I agree that the 36th Ulsters were very courageous. I need to visit the battlefield and get in touch with the Somme Association.
Excellent shots of, and information about the Ulster Memorial Tower. The lower room is somber and powerful. I would like to visit it.
    Superb video, Rob! Take care.

Booked my ‘walking the Somme’ tour for next year, on the back your superb videos. Always visited the Leeds pals memorial every year for Remembrance Sunday, never done the western front, looking forward (if that’s the right term), too putting a place to a name.

Rob, yet another great video, thank you. The additional parking outside the Ulster Tower was only added in 2015, in time for the centenary events. Apparently 2 of the missing 36th were found during the excavation of the tiny parking area, and it makes you realise just how many men still lie in the Somme fields. I’m back out visiting the area in late June / early July - and I cannot wait! Keep the videos coming - they are SO good!

Its been said that the target for the 36th was the hardest objective on the first day and also a way to 'get rid' of unionists due to the Home rule issue (Carson, etc)

My great grand father died 1st July 1916 in the fight for the Swabben Redoute, why were these lambs sent to slaughter ? When one looks back at the way this and other battles were lost it can only be called genocide caused by the elite.
Proud he fought, but for what ? So many families lost love ones, and to to see the Europe of today 💔
